PERSONAL STATEMENT

I obtained Bachelor of Engineering in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering with First Class Degree classification. Fuels and Energy is an important aspect of this course. Energy plays an important role in the economical and technological advancement of a nation. Most developing nations especially Africa countries depend on fossil fuels which is not renewable. Petroleum being the largest source of energy is depleting daily and may go to extinction. Therefore, there is need to develop a sustainable energy system that will be more efficient and environmental friendly than the fossil fuels. The combustion of fossil fuels produces a considerable environmental pollution which affects both aquatic and human life. Thus, developing nation like Nigeria requires professionals in this field to develop a sustainable and renewable energy system for the growth of her economy as well as meeting the demand of her citizens. This award will help me in developing my career as a young researcher in the field of sustainable energy technology. The greatest challenge faced by researchers in most developing countries is unavailability of modern facilities and equipment to enable them carry out researches in their field of interest. Thus this award will affords me of using modern equipment as well as working in a conducive atmosphere. Home Country Benefit The knowledge, training and the applied research skills acquired will be for human capacity development, capacity building and enhancement for sustainable development in my home country. These will also improve productivity, profitability and optimization via the re-injection of the skilled that must have been acquired into any organization I find myself. I will liaise with Nigerian Government in the developing of sustainable energy technology from available resources such as generation of energy using biomass, solar power, wind power, geothermal, hydroelectric and also ensure prevention of earth for future generation. This will be in accordance with the vision 20-20-20 of the Nigerian Government. The government has proposed that Nigeria will be among the 20 most developed nations in the world by year 2020. The knowledge will also be used in the maintenance of the existing power generating plant in the country. The kanji Dam hydropower plant, Egbin power plant, Thermal plant at Sapele (Edo State Nigeria) and others have been constructed more than two decades ago, thus require thorough maintenance in order to sustain their efficiency of power generation.
