New York City Local Law 26 How does it apply to your building?
New York City Local Law 26, Reference Standard 6-1 and 6-1A, is a revision to the citys building code that requires all Class E commercial properties that are 75 feet or taller to retrofit their emergency evacuation stairwells with photoluminescent markings and signage on or before July 1, 2006. What must be marked to be NYC Local Law 26 compliant?

The code outlines specific requirements for placement of photoluminescent signs and markings, including: Doors opening to exits or exit passageways Landings, perimeters, and individual stair steps located within exit passageways Obstacles and hazards located within exit passageways Directional guidance signs to vertical, horizontal, and final exits, plus Not an Exit door signs where applicable Handrails (not required for buildings with plans that were approved prior to July 1, 2006)

How to choose the right BradyGlo photoluminescent products for your building: Self-Sticking Adhesive Tapes and Signs
(MEA #218-05-M) Self-sticking adhesive tapes are lightweight, conformable and easy to install. These products require a clean, smooth, dry, non-porous surface for proper adhesion. Smooth but irregular surfaces, such as painted, non-porous concrete, can be accommodated; however, the surface irregularities will be visible through these products once applied.

Aluminum-Backed Products (MEA #233-05-M and MEA #251-05-M) Aluminum-backed rigid products are used with a separate construction adhesive that is applied on-site. These products are the best choice for rough and/or porous surfaces. Aluminum-backed products will give a flush appearance, can be shaped to conform to irregularities and, if needed, bridge gaps when applied to non-flat surfaces.
Both self-adhesive products and aluminum-backed products may be required where surface conditions vary within a single installation.

Anti-Slip Products

(MEA # Applied For) NYC Local Law 26 does not specify minimum slip-resistance requirements for photoluminescent products installed on walking surfaces, but other building codes may have specific slip-resistance requirements. For added safety, we recommend using anti-slip products when marking the leading edge of landings and the leading edge of stair steps.

Multiple uses for NYC Local Law 26 compliance include: Step markings, allowed on the entire horizontal leading edge of each step as a solid and continuous strip. Leading edge of landings, required on the entire horizontal leading edge of each landing as a solid and continuous strip the full length of the leading edge, or the same length as and consistent with the strips on the steps. Perimeter demarcation lines, intended to outline the egress path by providing low-location lines on both sides of the path, either on the floor or on the wall.
