Star Parties: Discovering the Night Sky

Locations away from city lights with clear skies make ideal places for star parties. Photograph by Bruce Dale More than a hundred adults and kids gather on a cold evening, chattering excitedly as they stand in the dark on a Virginia hillside. The odd thing is, no one has turned on a flashlight, and no streetlights or house lights wink on around them. These people have travelled to the countryside more than an hour from Washington, D.C., to get away from the glow of city lights. Thats because they are attending a star party. Star parties are gatherings where professional and amateur astronomers set up their telescopes and invite people to come learn about the night sky. Getting away from light pollution, or artificial skylight from buildings for example, helps stargazers see objects in the sky much better. At this star party, Sean OBrien of the National Air and Space Museums Einstein Planetarium starts off by asking the crowd to simply look up and take in all they can see. He points out plenty of things that can be seen with out special equipment. Stars, satellites, and even the Andromeda galaxy can be found if you know where to look. After OBriens guided tour, several dozen astronomers offer close-up views. Each has focused their telescope on a different part of the sky. As kids take a look, the owner gives a mini-lesson. OBrien says you can have your own star party at home and learn a lot just by paying attention to whats happening up above. Watch the sky as the seasons pass, and you will see that it changes, he says. Or start with the moon. Lots of people know the full moon and the crescent moon, but dont know the phases in between. Notice when and where you are seeing itmaybe even in the early morning while you wait for the school bus.

The herringbone is one of the simplest braids on the planet to do, but one of the harder ones to make look good.

Directions: 1. Gather a section of hair where you want the braid to start. 2. Insert your left index finger through the strand, bottom to top, separating the section into two strands. Use your right hand to finish separating the two strands. 3.Gather a small section of hair from the right side of the head the section over your index finger and combine it with the left 4. Move hand strand (between your thumb and index finger.)

ransfer both strands to your right hand. 5.Gather a small section of hair from the left side of the head. 6.Move the section over your index finger and combine it with the night-hand strand (between your thumb and index finger.) 7.Transfer the strands back into your left hand 8.Repeat 3-8 until there is no more hair to add. 9. Take the right strand in your right hand and the left strand in your left hand. Note: For the sake of clarity, we'll say that the last section of hair gathered was from the left crossing over to the right. 10.Insert your right index finger, palm up, through the back portion of the right strand, separating off a small section. 11.Turn your right hand palm down and add the separated section to the strand in your left hand. (Return your right hand to palm-up position.) 12. Use your left index finger to separate a small section from the back of the left strand. 13. Turn your left hand palm down and add the section to the right-hand strand. (Turn hand palm-up again.) 14.Repeat steps 11-14 to end of braid. 15.Tie off with hair fastener.

Once upon a time, allegedly, in a nice little forest, there lived an orphaned bunny and an orphaned snake. By surprising coincidence both were blind from birth. One day, the bunny was hopping through the forest, and the snake was slithering through the forest, when the bunny tripped over the snake and fell down. This, of course, knocked the snake about quite a bit. 'Oh, my,' said the bunny, 'I'm terribly sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. I've been blind since birth, so, I can't see where I'm going. In fact, since I'm also an orphan, I don't even know what I am.' 'It's quite OK,' replied the snake. 'Actually, my story is much the same as yours. I, too, have been blind since birth, and also never knew my mother. Tell you what, maybe I could slither all over you, and work out what you are, so at least you'll have that going for you.' 'Oh, that would be wonderful,' replied the bunny. So the snake slithered all over the bunny, and said, 'Well, you're covered with soft fur; you have really long ears; your nose twitches; and you have a soft cottony tail. I'd say that you must be a bunny rabbit.' 'Oh, thank you! excitement. Thank you,' cried the bunny in obvious

The bunny suggested to the snake, 'Maybe I could feel you all over with my paw, and help you the same way you've helped me.' So the bunny

6 felt the snake all over, and remarked, 'Well, you're scaly and smooth, and you have a forked tongue, no backbone and no balls. I'd say you must be either an accountant, or possibly someone in senior management.'

Aries
The information coming at you today may be clouded and delusional, Aries. Take it with a grain of salt. Someone could try to pull the wool over your eyes. Check the bus schedule twice before hopping on board. You could find yourself lost in the wrong part of town otherwise. Have patience and try not to get too upset if you aren't receiving the answers you want. The truth will come out soon enough.

Taurus
Your fantasy world will be especially active today, Taurus, and you should feel free to take off into dreamland. Let your imagination run the show today and you'll be delightfully surprised at the rewards this will bring to your everyday life. It may be hard to make a decision about anything practical, so don't even try. Leave it to a day in which you're feeling more grounded.

Leo

The other party might not be acting from a point of assuredness. Deal with them later.

Scorpion
Enjoy a spirited day in which you indulge in everything your heart desires, Scorpio. Your imagination could take you to a whole new realm in which you play the starring role. Live these fantasies. Remember that if you can dream it, you can do it, so think big. The fire inside you burns brightly, so make good use of this power before it's squandered away by someone else tugging on the strings.
