BEING THE PRESENCE OF CHRIST IN OUR COMMUNITY

the

Smile, Jerusalem Whats inside...

Frank Shirvinski
The view of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives is quite spectacular. As you leave the crowded streets to take your rst look across the Kidron Valley, you see the walls of the Great City encompassing religious pilgrims, shops, families, students, laborers and children playing in the streets. While you cannot see the people moving about the City from here, you can see the evidence of their presence. Smoke rises from the local bakery. Bells resound through the narrow streets. Megaphones call faithful worshipers to prayer, today. From the Mount of Olives, thousands of years of history also stretch before you. Great domes and towers ght for your attention as they mark sites of religious and cultural signicance. Fresh trenches are cut into the earth by curious archeologists to reveal ancient secrets. Massive limestone blocks and intricately carved columns remain in towering piles as chilling reminders of the wars and sieges which have marred the City. From here, even the future turns toward Jerusalem. At your feet, thousands of stone graves, set in wandering rows, face the City like spectators vying for seats near the 50 yard line. Each occupant silently waiting to be the rst to see the Messiah enter the Golden Gate. There is another, more popular, way to approach Jerusalem. From Mount Scopus, the modern buildings of the Hadassah Hospital and Hebrew University form the background as you face Jerusalem. Here, many tourist groups stop to recite the "shehechiyanu," the traditional blessing when one enters Jerusalem. On one particular journey to Jerusalem when I was traveling with an ecumenical delegation of American clergy, we stopped on Mount Scopus to recite the shehechiyanu. After the blessing we all lined up for the traditional group photo with Jerusalem rising over our shoulders. However, in addition to gold from the Dome of the Rock shining in the afternoon son, smoke from tear gas canisters rose from the Temple Mount. Minutes earlier, the Israeli Army had been called into the Old City to stop a group of Muslim youth from throwing stones on Jewish worshipers at the Kotel (Western Wall). I asked what was happening, but was told not to worry, just get in line for the picture. After all, we were on a tight schedule. A meeting about interfaith dialogue was about to begin. Ready? Everyone smile You too, Jerusalem. From these two mountains surrounding Jerusalem, the views were not as different as the people and the reasons we had come to this place. From the Mount of Olives, Jesus surveyed Jerusalem and wept. (Luke 19:41ff) From Mount Scopus, we took a group photo with a riot in the background. We are the difference, not the view. In a few days, we will celebrate a new beginning for the world. With the Resurrection, the past, present and future all changed, forever. How will we choose to see this celebration? Will we look to the event or the God we honor? What about the days following? Will we organize the photos of our families dressed in pastels? Will we ignore the problems and pain which ll the background of those photos? Or, recognize that God is still with us, healing, comforting and calling us to account, and that life is more than a collection of photo opportunities?

30-Hour Famine Wrap-Up

"A big thank you to all the students who participated and to all those who donated to this year's 30-Hour Famine. We had our largest team in years with nearly 20 students and raised a tremendous amount of funds to ght world hunger. Seeking sponsors to support their going without food for 30 hours, our students and congregation raised over $4,800, or enough for World Vision to FEED THIRTEEN CHILDREN FOR A YEAR! Congratulations, students! And thanks for not only thinking about others in need but doing something about it! A very special thanks to students Piper Boyll, Stephanie & Camden Backie, and Brie Aragaki who each individually raised over $360, enough to feed a child for an entire year. Many other students raised over $200 and $100, and every student showed hospitality to our fellow brothers and sisters at Epic Christian Church who joined us again this year."

Preheat oven to 300 degrees (this is important, don't wait till you're half done with the recipe!) Place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3. Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 tsp vinegar into mixing bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross, He was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30. Add egg whites to vinegar. Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11. Sprinkle a little salt into each child's hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus' followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read Luke 23:27. So far, the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 cup sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16. Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3. Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Read Matthew 27:57-60. Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF. Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus' tomb was sealed. Read Matthew 27:65-66. GO TO BED! Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20 and 22. On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter, Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matthew 28:1-9.

I have had fantastic experiences with every Stained Glass Teen Choir production I have been involved in, from The Sound Of Music, to Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat to Bye Bye Birdie and Annie, but Godspell is one of my favorites. When I originally saw Chaparral perform this play, I couldnt have been more than six. I remember being powerfully moved, even at such a young age. When I saw it again in middle school, I experienced the same effect. My hope for this years production of the show was that we would be able to give to the community that same experience, one of awe at Christs sacrifice, and I believe that is a goal that we were able to achieve. I feel incredibly blessed to have been a part of it. Although there were many times when I found the rehearsals difficult to balance with my workload at Scottsdale Prep and my other extracurricular activities, looking back I realize that every minute spent in preparation for our show was well worth it. I encourage any other teens who have been considering joining Teen Choir and participating in the musicals to do it. It is an incredibly enriching and fun experience!
