Vaughn 12/6/2011 Cell Wars The back ground of Cell Wars deals with DNA and cell division. DNA is double stranded, wound up, and made from for nucleotides. Cell division, or Mitosis, is what tumors depend on for growth. Multiplication of these cells takes thousands of receptors. The more receptors, or growth factors, the faster the cell can divide. These processes are responses from cell chatter. Cells communicate about migration, growth, adhesion, and differentiation. This communication is most likely chemical signals. Blood in the body also plays a huge role in the wars between cells. Bone marrow which is in the center of the bone between the spongy bones is a factory for the blood. It produces many cells needed for blood to function. A main cell produced would be red blood cells. Macrophages are another part of the blood which serves a type of dump truck. It collects all the bad and unneeded cells. The macrophage then breaks down the cells with enzymes and the parts left over are excreted. Neutrophil is the first line of defense in the blood stream. It goes to the site of infection and tries to attack and defeat the infection. The second line of defense is T Cells. These cells identify the invader by antigens. T Cells have the ability to recognize itself from foreign invaders. T Cells make vaccines possible. There is another group of defense cells known as killer cells. These cells destroy cells. They are driven by antigens and chemical messages. A killer cell is able to defeat other cells because in has arm-like parts that inject enzymes into the infection cells.

When talking about cell wars, cancer has to be mentioned. Cancer is caused by Viruses and bacteria, chemicals, smoking, radiation, hereditary, diet, and hormones. All cancers differ in their growth location, symptoms, race, and gender. There are ways to test for cancer including: Tissue biopsy, Pathology and many other tests. A certain test known as a fish test is used for certain cancers. This test shows abnormal genes from the normal genes. Another unique way to test cancer patients would be to use Onco-type DX. This type of testing is usually only used for breast and colon cancer. These tests can predict the chances of the cancer recurring and it also predicts drugs that would help fight the cancer. The types of treatment for cancer are: surgery, chemotherapy, biotherapy, and radiation. Many advances in the surgical procedures for cancer have been made. Laprascopic surgery is one advancement in cancer procedures. This surgery is mainly used for liver, gall bladder and appendix cancers. Only four to five incisions are made. The abdominal of the patient is inflated with carbon dioxide. This procedure gives the patients less pain and a much faster recovery. Chemotherapy has been advanced by finding new drugs. Doctors are also smaller doses more often. These advances give the patient less nausea, side effects, and kills cancer better.
