ABSTRACT:

In the present scenario, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) finds a wide range of applications. The major constraints of WSN are Limitation in Energy and Limitation in Bandwidth. The objective of this project is to reduce the energy consumption of the sensor and to make effective utilization of the bandwidth.

The energy limitation is overcome by changing the distribution of sensor nodes. Sensors are distributed in the area to be monitored for sensing various environmental parameters. Normally they are deployed uniformly. But in Uniform distribution a trade-off between equilibrium in energy and data efficiency is experienced. So, the region of interest cannot be monitored satisfactorily with less energy consumption. Hence it is proposed to adopt Gaussian distribution where the density of sensors can be altered according to the region of interest. This is done by varying the expectation vector and covariance matrix of the distribution. Thus, the region can be monitored effectively with minimum energy usage. Performance evaluation of Gaussian distribution is done by means of calculating energy consumption.

Further enhancement in the efficiency is expected by implementing a data aggregation algorithm, which overcome the Bandwidth limitation of WSN. The Data Aggregation Algorithm aids in detecting the region of emerging event accurately without flooding the network with flow of information. A Data aggregation algorithm is employed based on splay tree which involves construction of an aggregation tree in the network which consists of Tree Nodes. These Tree Nodes receive and aggregate data from other nodes referred to as Non-tree nodes. The Tree Nodes are uniformly distributed in the network so that the attribute readings sent by the Non-Tree nodes incurs less hop count, thereby prolonging the life time of Non-Tree nodes. The node which is nearest to the event among the triggered nodes is chosen as the Tree Node. This Tree Node broadcasts its unique ID and determines other triggered nodes and hence the event region. The Performance evaluation of the Data aggregation algorithm is done by determining the accuracy of sensor nodes of the whole coverage region, evaluating the compression ratio, comparison between the sizes of the aggregated packets and non-aggregated packets in the root.
