The Assumption College TESOL Certificate

The Assumption College TESOL Certificate is designed to prepare and assist new and in-service teachers in their teaching and leadership responsibilities within an English language teaching setting. While the focus of the certificate is the acquisition and improvement of practically-based, classroom teaching skills, other important elements will also be covered, such as language and linguistic theory, program management, cross-cultural issues and the integration of new language technologies. Recipients of the Assumption College TESOL Certificate will be well-prepared to teach and manage in the various areas of TESOL around the globe.

TESOL Classroom Topics: Cross-Cultural Issues (1.5 credits)

This course addresses cross-cultural issues in TESOL and looks at methods of understanding both surface and underlying cultural aspects that will equip the teacher with the skills to work with diverse groups of students and colleagues, creating a positive and productive classroom climate where all experience learning. Teacher learners will examine different cultural dynamics that come into play in the classroom and how to successfully observe, adapt and deliver as an effective cross-cultural communicator and instructor.

TESOL Classroom Topics: Integrating Technology (1.5 credits)

This course focuses on assisting teacher learners to integrate technology in the TESOL classroom. After studying the whys of educational technology, teacher learners will understand the hows by learning and experimenting with multiple language learning technology tools to create useful activities and assignments. The objective is for teacher learners to master (with a small "m") and implement these kinds of tools in their instructional delivery. Examples of technologies to be learned and practiced are Blogs, Vlogs, Wikis, Podcasts, Virtual Words, and other tech tools and devices.

TESOL Certificate Course Descriptions

TESOL Language and Theory (3 credits)
This course surveys first and second language acquisition theories as well as aspects of linguistics and the history and practice of TESOL most useful for the theoretical needs of ESOL teachers. Language will be examined as a cultural phenomenon and its component parts from a structural perspective. The history and development of approach and practice of the Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages will also be investigated. Teacher learners will also study important contributors and contributions in second language acquisition to develop a personal theoretical framework from which to successfully operate in their instructional functions and settings.

Assessment, Design and Management in TESOL (3 credits)

In this course, we consider both classroom and program level perspectives of management from the A,B,Cs of starting and operating an ESOL program and initial needs assessment to course design and classroom management. This course also investigates the various purposes, methods, and forms of assessment in the TESOL classroom and program, including English language test preparation, focusing on test preparation study methods and materials for tutoring and teaching needs.

Reading and Writing for TESOL (3 credits)

This course focuses on methods and practice of teaching reading and writing to English language learners. In addition to some of the developmental and physiological aspects of reading, specific reading skills including pre-reading exercises, developing vocabulary skills, comprehension activities, and reading topic discussion will be studied. Topics in writing will include grammar, writing tasks and introducing the writing process steps of generating ideas, drafting, revising, and publishing. Teacher learners will research aspects of these skills and be assigned readings, research and presentations. They will develop a portfolio of activities to be used with their students.

TESOL Practicum (3 credits)

This is a supervised practical application which takes the teacher learner into an ESOL classroom to observe, teach experimentally, reflect and share with peers and instructors on connecting teaching practice to underlying language acquisition theory. The objective is to foster the development of a system of collaborative self-reflection and professional development in teaching. Teacher learners will prepare and deliver instructional activities in partner ESOL classes.

Listening and Speaking for TESOL (3 credits)

This course will train teachers in numerous teaching methods and practical activities for listening and speaking students. Students will also learn to use the International Phonetic Alphabet and understand essential aspects of pronunciation and accent reduction, as well as various language learning media designed for listening work. A focus will be on the development of discussion skills and finding interesting sources of listening input. Teacher learners will develop a portfolio of activities to be used with their students.
