About Project

The project was of analyzing the PEARL ACADEMY of FASION for being a green building. The project was completed by 8 students of Malaviya National Institute of Technology after the 4th semester during their summer vacations in the academy located in Kukas which is around 25km from Jaipur city. The project was started with the prior permission of the dean of the academy on 13th May, 2010. The observations were taken for the whole day which included marking of points where the readings were to be taken and then noting down the temperature and humidity readings at those points. The points included all the rooms and outside and inside points of the building. The observations were taken when the classes were not in progress hence not disturbing the studies of the students. During each reading a security guard was present and kept a check on our moves. The observations were then analyzed and a result was concluded.

Objective
The objective of the project was to analyze the green building, PEARL ACADEMY OF FASHION for its claim of being a green building and to suggest remedial measures to improve the performance of the building as a green building.

Site/Location
The site for the project was chosen in KUKAS in Jaipur district where PEARL ACADEMY OF FASHION is located at a distance of about 25km from the Jaipur city. The building which is two storeys and a basement claims to be a green building and is designed in such a way that it consumes minimum energy and hence conserves the environment. The building has a water pool in the basement which keeps the area colder and the roof is designed in such a way that the direct sunrays do not fall on the interior walls of the blocks. Also the technique of MATKA FILLING is being used while casting the top slabs which act as insulation of the rooms from outside temperature effects. The corridors are wide enough and the section of the beams and the columns are taken in such a way that they serve the purpose to a full extent.

The rooms of top floors special insulating glasses are used which provides insulation along with nice architectural effects. The whole building is surrounded by sun sheds to prevent the sunlight to from falling directly on the main walls. The design of the building is an engineering marvel which serves its purpose of being a green building and provide an attractive appearance altogether.

Methodology
A green building is designed in such a way that it provides its inhabitants the same comfort as that of a normal building with use of less energy which that building might be using if it was a normal one. The temperature and humidity measurements at marked points are comparable to that needed for a normal human being to feel comfortable in that environment. Hence certain points were chosen in the building where these readings were taken using an instrument known as THERMO HYGROMETER. . All the rooms of the building were accounted and also the special design and the materials used during the construction were also taken into consideration. Also the non structural members present in the building were also recorded while

making the observations. Hence all the essential data was recorded which included the plantation areas, number of appliances including the air conditioners and computers, furniture works were recorded along with the observations.

Procedure
We all got divided into group of 2persons in each. The following steps were followed during the project: STEP1: an overview of building was taken and then points were marked on the basement, ground floor and the first (top) floor where the readings were to be taken which are as shown in the plans. STEP2: using the instrument temperature and humidity readings were taken on the respective points twice each day at different times. The readings were taken by placing the instrument at the point for about 4-5 minutes and then recording the data. While taking the readings the aspects of the room were also taken into account by noting the number of computers, air conditioners and their tonnage in the room, number of people present in the room, kind of furniture, and any glass insulation.etc.

STEP3: Temperature just outside the rooms was recorded in a similar manner. STEP4: The recorded data of each day was compiled.

Conclusion
After conducting the temperamental survey of PEARL ACADEMY OF FASHION DESIGNING, for a period of 3 days from 13th May to 15th May,2010 from 10 am to 5pm. It was concluded that the drop in the temperature of the wind coming from outside to inside varies between 1-2 deg. C which was expected much higher. As it was expected that due to the effect of evaporative cooling to the wind entering the building from south direction, it was not much effective as the wind cant interact properly with the water body. Due to the low altitude sun, there is excessive heating in the west direction of the building resulting in increase in temperature of west portion.

Due to the glasses in upper ground floor and first floor of building, due to the green house and glazing effect, further increase of the temperature was seen in the latter part of the day. It is expected that in the monsoon season, the condition inside the building will Detroiter due to increase in humidity because of the evaporative cooling. The effect of jaali system all around the building was appreciable as it allows the defused light to enter the building and prevents the direct sunlight and heat due to infrared radiations and also maintains the ventilation. In all it was concluded that the building do not serve the purpose of being a green building.
