Mass Communication (50 Seats)


The graduates of M.A. Mass Communication are expected to be media professionals with strong conceptual and technical skills who are ready to choose a diversity of career options in radio, photography, film, video & TV Production. The two-year intensive course imparts learning in technical and conceptual skills through both hands-on production work and theoretical academic work. The graduates of MCRC have over the years distinguished themselves in a diversity of media related careers. They are contributing energetically to various media institutions and industries as producers, directors, reporters, editors, camerapersons, writers, independent film-makers, teachers, scholars, designers, media practitioners and installation artists. The Programme requires students to clear final examination in four parts held at the end of each of the four semesters that are spread over two academic years. The examination consists of written papers, media production, internal assessment (including professional performance) and viva voce.

Eligibility Candidates who have taken their first degree in Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Engineering or Medicine, Commerce etc. are eligible to apply, provided they have secured 50 percent or more marks in aggregate in their first degree examination of a Course which is of three or more years duration after the 10+2 Examination. The students have to submit along with the application form a Statement of Purpose which should also briefly encapsulates all the extra curricular activities they have been involved with (at the time of Interview). The students are not to submit a Portfolio at this stage, but are expected to carry a Portfolio in case of selection to the interview stage. Admission Process The Admission test will be held as per the schedule given in the Prospectus. The examination will comprise of a Written Test and Interview.

The Written Exam will comprise of two tests (Paper I and Paper II) which will be held in the university campus (Delhi). The paper will be designed to assess the talent of the candidates, their aptitude, creative & language abilities, general awareness and views over a wide area of knowledge. Short listed candidates will be asked to appear for the Interview. The Interview will be held at the MCRC, Delhi. The students must carry their Portfolio and Statement of purpose, which will be assessed during the interview. The number of candidates called for the interview shall be three times the number of seats (category-wise) in order of merit provided that they have secured at least 33% marks in the written test.

Entrance Test The following is the distribution of marks for the Entrance Examination: Written Exam: Paper I: 60 marks (Media Analysis) Paper II: 150 marks (Evaluation of Knowledge and Aptitude) Interview: 45 marks Portfolio: 45 marks (media related activities) The List of candidates short-listed for written test and interview shall be displayed on the Centre's Notice Board and website as per the admission schedule. Hall tickets/Admit Cards will be issued to the candidates at the Examination Centre before the exam.

Introduction to the Programme: The programme shall be completed in four semesters that are available to be completed in two consecutive academic years. Through a rich mix of courses designed specifically to give complete exposure to the Audio as well as Audio Visual media, the students will get both theoretical as well as practical training which will gradually equip them to become able media practitioners. Strength of the programme lies in providing both hands on training as well as exposure to vital media theories so that the faculty of critical media practice and thinking is evolved amongst the students. Programme Structure The programme follows the semester system where various courses are taught and there are credits to be earned for each course. Semester 1 and 2 are taught in the first year, whereas Semester 3 and 4 are taught in the second year. All courses on offer are compulsory.

Note: Evaluation, award of Grades, Cumulative Grade Point Average etc, will be as per The Ordinance 15 -A (XV-A) of Jamia Millia Islamia University. However, attendance rules will be as per the decision of Board Of studies of AJK MCRC which has stipulated that 75% attendance will be mandatory for all students. To be eligible to appear in the final exams students will be required to attend a minimum of 75% of all the classes and practical. Any student not fulfilling this condition will not be allowed to appear in the final examination and will be subject to the existing rules and regulations of AJK MCRC.
