Whats new, doc?

This version comes with a number of new features as: - Compatibility with Excel 2007 - Storing of multiple branches of the same well - Anti-collision calculation (center to center only) - Multiple wells drawing - New file storing data (no backward compatibility) Of course the using of the above features implies the user has to provide more input data.

Each well is stored in a separate file like before (an Access database having .cas extension instead of .mdb) but this time includes not only information about the trajectory and the well coordinates but also casing and drillstring, in order to be used by the new version of Torque & Drag too. However the new .cas file its not compatible with the old .dev file therefore the new Survey will not read .dev files. However both the old .dev files and the new .cas files are Access databases therefore the user can simply copy manually the data from one file to another.

The buttons Load Branch loads a well and displays the branches of the well. The user can pick a branch to load into the spreadsheet. However despite all the branches are displayed, in the Design sheet only the planned trajectories can be loaded while in the sheet Trajectory the user can load any of the two types of trajectories (plan and actual), either from the tie-o point or from surface. Load Well loads a well in the memory of the program. No branch is displayed but the wells data is populated and it can be accessed with the Well header form. Well header allows the user to input the rest of the directional information for the well and/or the branch. This tool wants to control the tie on point of each branch and the exact position of the wellhead, vital information for the multiple well drawing and for anti-collision. Different fields on this form are trying to control the quality of the input data by changing the enabled status according the situation. For example the type of the well (platform or onshore), elevation, and the measuring unit system can be changed as long as the well has only a main hole. Once a branch was tied on to the main hole, the above data cannot be changed anymore, unless the branches are deleted. New Branch the existing data on the sheet Design is deleted and the Well Header form is opened. If there is a well loaded, the tab Parent branch is enabled and if the existing branches are loaded into the combo box. New RTE use this button to modify the RTE of a well in a closed file. Save branch saves the opened branch in the current well. Add branch saves the opened branch as another branch in the current well. Save as new well creates a new well (file on disk) and saves the opened branch in this new well Clear branch clears the data on the spreadsheet while Clear well deletes all the data of the current well from the memory of the program. None of these two buttons is modifying the actual file on disk. Also it is closing the well file and allows the modification of the RTE.

How it works: To create a new trajectory (branch) in an existing well you may want first to modify the RTE of the well if this is a re-entry. The only way to do it is by pressing the <New RTE> button, and selecting the well. This will shift all the deviations up or down with the difference between the new and the previous RTE, keeping the first value (referencing the RTE) as zero. In order not to create confusion, the RTE can be modified only when the well file is closed. Therefore ALL the deviations stored in the file (planned and actual) will be adjusted for the new RTE. The next step is to open the well: press <Load Well>, select the well, press <New Branch> to fill the name of the new branch and the azimuth used to project the vertical section:

On this form you may also modify the wellhead UTM coordinates and the step for interpolation of the measurements. The program is supposed to prevent the modification of the measurement units once a deviation was added to the new well, as well as changing the location of the well (onshore or offshore - platform). If the active sheet is the Design, then the deviation is locked as Plan by default.

If the new deviation is tied on an existing one (designed or actual), just check the Tie on label and select the parent deviation from the combo box. This will resize the form allowing the user to input the tie on MD. The correspondent tie on parameters are interpolated automatically on the selected trajectory, inclusive the UTM coordinates of the point. Press the <SAVE> button. At this point the tie on point is saved on the first line of the spreadsheet and the rest of the data is stored in memory.

When the tie on point is at surface (RTE = 0), the first line will be 0 MD, 0 TVD, 0 deg incl, 0 deg azi, 0 North and 0 East.

Continue the input of the constraints of the trajectory (one for Hold, and three for the other methods. If the calculation method is supported by the program, in the field Method will be automatically filled the appropriate calculation method or, if there are two available methods, the user has to choose the method from the combo box placed on the current line. The constrains will be automatically marked in bold blue font as they are input. Press <Calculate> to do the calculation and youll get the table filled as above. In the same time, the interpolated deviation with the step and on the azimuth specified in the Well header form, its displayed on the sheet Survey Table. Note: Before doing any modification on this sheet, do press <Undo> button. Pressing the Undo button on sheet Design will revert to the previous sets of constrains stored in memory therefore it is recommended to modify the constrains (marked with the bold blue font) only when the yellow fields are empty. Same for saving the modified tie on point on the Well Header form. Failing to follow this rule will result in mismatching the memory stored data and the spreadsheet data. Basic horizontal and vertical plots, with the segments numbered, are drawn on the sheet Graphs. Load branch - Press Load branch - Select the branch from the list (Select or double click) On the Design sheet only Design wells can be loaded, from the Tie On point only. However on the Trajectory sheet, the user can load any of the two types of trajectories (plan and actual), either from the tie-o point or from surface. Save a branch - Straightforward: just press Save Branch and the existing branch will be overwritten. Here you can change the name of the branch, if needed. The data is indentified in the database with an index, automatically generated, transparent for the user. Create a new branch from an existing one in a well - Modify the branch and Well Header as needed - Press Add Branch The data will be saved in the same well with the name provided in the Well Header. Create a new well (new branch) Press New Branch (the fields on the sheet are deleted and initialized) Fill the data in the Well Header Press Save as New Well

At this point, the Well Header data and the data filled in the sheet are saved as per the well name provided, in the chosen location. An existing main hole (tied on at surface, i.e. MD=0) can be also saved as a new well by pressing Save as New Well Delete a branch from a well - Load the branch to be deleted - Press Well Header - Press Delete The existing branch will be deleted from the file only, but it will be still available on the screen. If the branch has another branch tied on it, the deletion is not allowed. To delete it, first delete the branch tied on it or connect it to another existing branch. This is to avoid the existence of the floating wells, disconnected branches.

Drawing Wells It is useful to visualize the vertical and horizontal plots of a number of wells. The button Load wells allows the (multiple) selection of the wells to be drawn. This will load ALL the branches of a selected well. If you forgot one well or the well is located in another folder, you can added with Add well. You can remove any of the loaded wells from the left list with Remove well or remove all the wells with Clear List. However pressing Load wells will automatically clear the list. The wells (branches) to be drawn are selected in the right side list with the >> button (all of them) or > to add only the selected one in the left side list. The buttons < and << are used to remove the selected branch in the right list or all the branches, respectively. For the Vertical Section you can use a common azimuth which supersedes the individual azimuths stored in the files for each branch. If you chose to draw only one well, the check boxes Use Elevation and Use UTM coordinates are facultative. However if you select in the right list branches form different well, the use of the elevation and UTM is compulsory, by default. When happy with the selections, press Draw. The sheet containing the charts will be automatically shown up. For this version, it is assumed all the selected wells use the same measuring units system. Do not mix them!

The result shows like hereafter:

Anti-collision This is a basic anti-collision calculation, center to center of the ellipsoids, calculated as the shortest distance between two 3D straight segments, a reasonable assumption if the segments are short enough. The default values as 3m or 10 feet but the user can modify them. However a shorter segment may lead to an excessive duration for calculation and may even exhaust the computer memory. Pick reference well which is the well we plan to drill. The well is read and the tie on MD and the TD are shown. The user can chose to run the anti-collision on a shorter interval instead of the entire well. This is recommended if the user plans to use segments shorter than 10 ft on long wells. By default the maximum separation distance is 1,000 ft but it may be modified as well. For the moment, the surface hole size and the safety margin are not used, as well as the ellipsis of uncertainty is not calculated. However the program may be improved in the future with the calculation of the ellipsis of uncertainty for different probabilities and tools. Then Pick the offset wells allows multiple wells to be selected. Use the buttons to add a well from another folder, to remove a well (actually branch) and to remove all the planned trajectories as these ones are not a concern for collision (unless we really plan to drill them in the future). User can also clear the offset wells list but picking a new set of well will automatically clears the list anyway. Press Calculate to start the computation.

The sheet with the chart is showed up and the progress window is opened on top. As the process can last a few minutes per each branch of the offset wells, the user has the possibility to monitor the progress and to cancel the calculation if desired to, by pressing the button Abort. The list shows the current status and the progress bar gives an indication of the expected duration of the calculation.

In order to have an idea about the order of precision of the calculation, the program was tested against Compass of Landmark, version 2003.16 build 42H. The dotted lines are the results exported from Compass. The zoomed chart shows a perfect match except for XY-44-1D-1 and XY-44-1H-1. I suspect an error on the input data in Compass because the XY-44-1H-1 should superpose XY-44-1D-1 at surface as one is sidetracked from the other one, like XY-47-1D-1 and XY-47-1H-1.
