Unit Description
Description
This unit covers the following topics: analogue communicationsreview of signal representations; random processes and noise; modulation and demodulation techniques (AM, FM); spectrum utilisation; noise performance; pulse modulation (PAM, PCM); digital communicationsbaseband digital transmission; intersymbol interference; Nyquist criteria; line coding; signal space analysis; passband digital transmission (ASK, PSK, FSK, QAM); bit error rate; bandwidth efficiency; and information theory and codingentropy; mutual information; binary channels (BSC, BEC); channel capacity; source coding (Huffman codes); fundamentals of channel coding (Hamming distance); and Shannon's coding theorems.
Learning outcomes
# 1 2 Outcomes Work effectively in lab teams/pairs. Communicate effectively using written lab reports. Explain the basics of communication systems, including the basics about souce coding, channel coding, and information theory. Carry out performance analysis of relevant systems. Be able to conduct simple simulations using MATLAB. Assessment Activity lab and lab reports assignments and final exam
ACE/AISE/CARS
All newly enrolled students (at any level) are required to complete the Academic Conduct Essentila (ACE). More information on this requirement can be found at http://www.ace.uwa.edu.au. ACE is completed online through your WebCT page (http://webct.uwa.edu.au).
Assessment
Assessment overview
This is based on a final examination, submitted assignments, and written laboratory reports. The assignments and examination test students understanding of the fundamentals and their ability to solve theoretical problems in communications systems. The laboratory reports demonstrate students ability to interpret laboratory experiments and communicate the results in a written form.
