THE MORNING P ROGRAM

Ann Thayers presentation will review common Alzheimers myths, including a discussion of Alzheimers Disease verses normal aging, to help separate fact from fiction. Other topics the workshop will cover are Early warning signs of and risk factors for Alzheimers Disease Explanation of other forms of dementia Differences between reversible and irreversible forms of dementia Current research findings
Ann Thayer, BS, Alz Disease Mgmt Certified Ann Thayer is the Leatherstocking Region Program Manager for the Alzheimers Association, NENY. She oversees Alzheimers and dementia-specific family education, professional development, care consultations, and other training workshops for Otsego, Delaware & Schoharie Counties. Ann has a Bachelor of Science in Speech Communication from Plattsburgh State University and received certification in Alzheimers disease Management from the University of Southern Indiana in 2007. Prior to joining the Alzheimers Association in 2005, Ann organized Alzheimers Research for those with Down syndrome at Pathfinder Village in Edmeston, NY. Ann currently lives in Cooperstown, NY.

THE A FTERNOON P ROGRAM

Dr McCallion will speak to how families from differing cultural and ethnic backgrounds relate as caregivers to persons with dementia. Dementia also has a devastating impact on adults with an intellectual disability as well as on their families, friends, housemates, and service provider staff who often provide key long-term support and care. Currently Dr. McCallion is a member of the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices will share the Task Groups findings Philip McCallion, Ph.D. ACSW is Professor in the School of Social Welfare, SUNY Albany ,a Hartford Geriatric Social Work Faculty Scholar and Mentor and Director of the Institute for Social Services Research and Development. Within the newly formed institute Dr. McCallion directs the Center for Excellence in Aging Services and the NIDAfunded Child Welfare, Drug Abuse and Intergenerational Risk Research Center. Dr. McCallion's research is focused on caregiving issues, particularly the interaction of informal care with formal services, collaboration across service systems, and the experiences of multi-cultural families. His work has included evaluation of non-pharmacological interventions for persons with dementia, the development of innovative demonstration projects designed to maintain aging persons with intellectual disabilities in the community.

The Geriatric Mental Health Training Series is a program of the Delaware County NY Connects Long Term Care Advisory Council. The Council identified the need to educate professionals and the community on the mental health issues facing older adults and established the Geriatric Mental Health Series. The first series was held in 2010.
