2 Overview of OML Backup

2 Overview of OML Backup

The OML is the operation and maintenance link between the BSC and the BTS. When the OML is faulty, the BTS cannot work. With this feature, two OMLs can be configured on two independent E1s (one for each). When the active OML is faulty, the BTS uses the standby OML. Thus, the BTS and cells can continue working without being out of service due to transmission fault or port fault. OML backup improves the robustness of the BTS. When the working OML is broken because transmission links are faulty, the BTS is not reset and cells are not out of service. Compared with the ring topology that requires twice the amount of resources, this feature requires only a few timeslots. In addition, configuration of the OMLs on two E1s can ensure stable operation of the BTS with little consumption of transmission resources.

GSM BSS OML Backup

3 Technical Description

3 Technical Description
3.1 OML Backup
When OMLBKUP is set to YES(Yes), OML backup is started. The BSC configures one OML on port 0 and one OML on port 1, and one OML is set up successfully by default. The BTS attempts to re-establish an OML only when the BTS is reset or the OML that has been successfully set up becomes faulty. If the OML that has been successfully set up becomes faulty, the BTS automatically switches over to the other port and sets up an OML on the port after a period specified by WTBS. WTBS specifies how long the BTS waits before it switches over to the other port after the working OML becomes faulty. This prevents frequent switchovers caused by OML fault. If the OML is set up successfully, the BSC triggers an OML switchover to the other port. If the OML fails to be set up, the BTS continues to attempt to set up an OML on the port until the time specified by TBS expires, and then attempts to set up an OML on the faulty port. TBS specifies the maximum time in which the BTS attempts to set up an OML after switching over the active and standby OMLs. If the BTS fails to set up the OML within the period specified by TBS, the BTS switches over the active and standby OMLs again. After the OML switchover, the RSL, TCH, idle timeslot, and monitoring timeslot are not switched over. That is, for port 0 and port 1, if the transmission link or port where the working OML is located is faulty, all the TRX, channels, idle timeslots, and monitoring timeslots configured on this port become unavailable. The TRX, channels, idle timeslots, and monitoring timeslots on the normal port, however, are still available. Thus, the BTS and cells can continue to work without being out of service. This feature is supported by the BTS in TDM and HDLC transmission modes. This feature is not supported by the BTS in IP transmission mode.

4 Parameters

4 Parameters
Table 4-1 Parameter description Parameter ID NE OMLBKUP MML Command Description

BSC6900SET Meaning: This parameter specifies whether to BTSOMLBACKUP(Optional) configure the backup OML. When "YES" is configured in the BTS, an OML is configured in timeslot 31 of port 0 and port 1 respectively. The links are established on the two ports in turn after the BTS is reset. Once the OML is established on a port, it is always used unless the BTS is reset or the OML is disconnected. If the established OML is disconnected, the BTS automatically switches the OML over to another port to re-establish the OML. GUI Value Range: NO(No), YES(Yes) Actual Value Range: NO, YES Unit: None Default Value: NO

WTBS

BSC6900SET Meaning: Time for which the BTS waits to swap BTSOMLBACKUP(Optional) the OML after the OML is interrupted. With this parameter, the BTS does not swap the OML when the OML is interrupted transiently. GUI Value Range: 30~300 Actual Value Range: 30~300 Unit: s Default Value: 90

TBS

BSC6900SET Meaning: Maximum time in which the BTS BTSOMLBACKUP(Optional) attempts to set up the OML after swapping the main and backup OMLs. If the BTS fails to set up the OML within this time, the BTS swaps the main and backup OMLs again. GUI Value Range: 30~300 Actual Value Range: 30~300 Unit: s Default Value: 90
