IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICES

1. Before disassembling or assembling parts of the scanner and option, make sure that the scanner power cord is unplugged. 2. The wall outlet should be near the scanner and easily accessible. 3. The output voltage of the PSU (Power Supply Unit) can be either 100 ~ 240 Vac, without any adjustment. Make sure that the above voltage is used. 4. The power cord should be an approved type, in accordance with the regulations for the country in which the scanner is used. 5. The use of cables other than the shield cables or specified equivalents will invalidate the certification of this scanner and may cause interference levels which exceed the limits established for this equipment. 6. When keeping used lithium batteries in order to dispose of them later, do not put more than 100 batteries per sealed box. Storing larger numbers or not sealing them apart may lead to chemical reactions and heat buildup.

Lithium Batteries (Memory Back-up)

CAUTION
The danger of explosion exists if a battery of this type is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or an equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Discard used batteries in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. Maintenance Information The operating instructions explain how to use and maintain the scanner. Before performing the maintenance, read the operating instructions. Warning concerning copyright Many documents are copyrighted. Initializing The exposure lamp [A] (a xenon lamp in this model) illuminates the original. The image is reflected onto a CCD [B] (charge coupled device) via several mirrors, and through the lenses. When you turn on the machines main power, the scanner optics unit moves to the home position sensor [C]. After the HP sensor detects the scanner optics unit, the scanner moves under the white plate [E] (this is the home position of the scanner optics unit). If the scanner home position sensor is not activated within a certain time, a home position sensor error will occur. Scanning Platen mode When the machine receives a job command, the scanner optics unit scans the white plate [E] and then an original. After scanning an original, the scanner optics unit moves to the HP sensor [C]. The scanner optics unit stops at the home position after the HP sensor detects it. ADF mode The scanner optics unit scans the white plate [E] and then moves back to the ADF exposure glass [D]. The scanner optics unit stops to scan an original under the ADF exposure glass. When the exit sensor [H] detects the trailing edge of the original, the original is sent again to the exit tray through the scanner, past the registration roller [D], first [E], second transport roller [F] and exit roller [C] without scanning at this time. The CCD generates three analog video signals. The AFE (Analog Front End processor) on the SBU (Sensor Board Unit) converts these analog signals to 10-bit digital signals. It sends these digital signals to the MCB (Main Control Board) board through the LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling). The CPU on the MCB processes the image, and then the image data is sent to the network or to a local printer through the NIB or the SCSI-2 controller.

SM

IMAGE PROCESSING

6.7.2 IMAGE PROCESSING IN THE SBU

The CCD converts the light reflected from the original into an analog signal. Each analog signal is transmitted to the analog front end IC. The analog front end IC does the following operations. 1. Z/C (Zero Clamp) Adjusts the black level reference for even-numbered pixels to match the oddnumbered pixels. 2. Signal Amplification Operational amplifiers in the AGC (Auto Gain Control) circuit amplify the analog signal. The CPU on the MCB board controls the maximum gain. After the above processes, the analog signals are converted to 10-bit digital signals by the A/D converters. The shading function corrects these signals. Shading correction prevents uneven images caused by fluctuations in scanned data due to changes in light intensity and CCD sensitivity.

6.7.3 IMAGE PROCESSING IN THE MCB

The CPU on the MCB is the image processor. It does the following: 1. Scan line correction 2. White level correction 3. Gamma () correction 4. Line skipping correction 5. Mirroring for ADF Mode 6. Magnification 7. Color resolution 8. Background Erase 9. Auto binary processing 10. Auto image area separation 11. Filtering 12. Scale processing
Detailed Descriptions 6-11 G422

SM

IMAGE PROCESSING

Scan line correction

The CCD consists of three lines of elements, one for each color (red, green and blue). Since there is a slight gap between the lines, each line is scanning a slightly different part of the image. To produce the final image, these three outputs need to be synchronized. Since the deviation between the lines varies with the scanner speed, a deviance value must be calculated in proportion to the speed.

White level correction

The video signal information for each pixel obtained during image scanning is corrected by the image processing circuits. Due to the loss of exposure lamp brightness, less brightness at the edges of the lens and distortions in the light path, the machine scans a white plate before scanning each original. The white plate is uniform in color and in reflection.

Gamma () correction (Input/Output)

There should be a linear relationship between the original image density and the CCD output. Gamma correction adjusts for deviations from this ideal. It includes both brightness and contrast corrections.

Line skipping correction

Ideally, this machine would scan at a constant speed. However, when the data transfer speed slows down, the scanner optics unit must also slow down to match. If the scanner optics unit must stop to wait on the client or server, duplicate lines may be scanned. These can create a visible seam between the scanned sections. Line skipping correction erases duplicate image lines, ensuring a smooth final image.

Mirroring for ADF Mode

When scanning an original using the ADF, the magnification circuit creates a mirror image. This is because the scanning starting position in the main scan direction is at the other end of the scan line in ADF mode (compared with platen mode). Otherwise, a scanned image in book mode differs from ones in ADF mode. This prevents a different image.

Magnification
The CPU on the MCB enlarges or reduces the image data in the scan direction. Changing the scanning speed does reduction and enlargement in the sub scan direction.

G422

6-12

SM

IMAGE PROCESSING

Color resolution
Because of the differences in color space, the color observed by a person, and the color value sensed by the CCD can vary. Color resolution corrects the color data gathered by the CCD. It uses a color table that adjusts for the way particular colors are displayed on specific CRTs. This allows a more-natural representation of the scanned image. This also changes RGB signals to YMC signals. After adjusting color resolution, this changes YMC signals to RGB signals again.

Background erase
Background can be erased with this function using threshold value.

Auto binary processing

When making simple binary scans of a light original (e.g. gray text on a white background), the threshold level is adjusted. This allows the lighter shades to appear in the final image.

Auto image area separation

When a scanned document contains text and photo areas, the machine searches for the outlines of the text. Based on these outlines, it separates the image into text and photo areas. Text areas use simple binary processing. Photo areas use dithering and error diffusion.

Filtering
There are two software filters: the MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) filter and the smoothing filter. The MTF filter emphasizes sharpness, and is used with documents that contain both text and photo areas. The smoothing filter is only used for photo-image documents.

SM

6-13

G422

Detailed Descriptions

IMAGE PROCESSING

Scale processing
This process generates image densities of up to 256 levels for each pixel. It uses simple binary, dithering, and error diffusion processing. Simple binary processing sets the level based on a threshold value. There are no shades of gray. The output is black or white only. Dither processing is used to reproduce originals with continuous tones, such as photographs on machines that cannot output true grayscales. It produces different shades of gray by creating patterns of black and white dots. There are no gray dots. The error diffusion process reduces the difference in contrast between light and dark areas of a halftone image. Each pixel is corrected using the difference between it and the surrounding pixels. The corrected pixels are then compared with a matrix table. Error diffusion is often used in text/photo mode. It is a good compromise because it reduces the contrast between light and dark areas of halftone images, while having no effect on letter areas.
