The MCB (Main Controller Board) controls this machine. Its CPU checks all sensors and controls the ADF, all motors/fans, and the USB board. It also processes images from the SBU. The Network board controls the PCMCIA interface (I/F), SD Card I/F, Ethernet I/F, user interface (operation panel) and passes the image data from the MCB to the necessary I/F.

SCANNING OVERVIEW
[C]
G422D102.WMF
[B]
Initializing The exposure lamp [A] (a xenon lamp in this model) illuminates the original. The image is reflected onto a CCD [B] (charge coupled device) via several mirrors, and through the lenses. When you turn on the machines main power, the scanner optics unit moves to the home position sensor [C]. After the HP sensor detects the scanner optics unit, the scanner moves under the white plate [E] (this is the home position of the scanner optics unit). If the scanner home position sensor is not activated within a certain time, a home position sensor error will occur. Scanning Platen mode When the machine receives a job command, the scanner optics unit scans the white plate [E] and then an original. After scanning an original, the scanner optics unit moves to the HP sensor [C]. The scanner optics unit stops at the home position after the HP sensor detects it. ADF mode The scanner optics unit scans the white plate [E] and then moves back to the ADF exposure glass [D]. The scanner optics unit stops to scan an original under the ADF exposure glass. After scanning an original, the scanner optics unit moves to the HP sensor [C]. The scanner optics unit stops at the home position after the HP sensor detects it.

The originals push the actuator [A]. Then the original set sensor [B] turns on. After you push the start button, the feed motor [C] starts to turn. It pushes the pick-up roller [D] down to the original. (The feed motor drives the pick-up roller through the feed roller [E].) Then the pick-up roller [D] feeds the original to the separation pad [F]. The separation pad [F] lets one sheet of the originals go into the scanner.

The feed motor feeds the separated page of the original to the registration roller [A]. The registration sensor [B] detects the page. Then the registration roller corrects original skew. The feed motor turns in the opposite direction to drive the registration roller, and the transport motor turns on. The registration roller, first transport roller [C], second transport roller [D] and the exit roller [E] feed the original to the exit tray.

DETAILED FUNCTIONS
Double-sided originals
Front side An original is fed to the exit sensor in the same manner as for the singlesided scanning mode.
G422D103.WMF
Rear side [D] When the exit sensor [A] detects the trailing edge of an [E] original, the exit roller [C] turns in reverse. The junction gate [B] closes because of its weight after the original goes past it. Because of this, when the exit roller feeds the original, it goes up to the registration roller. After skew is corrected, the roller [G] is pulled away from the exit roller [C] by the exit roller release solenoid.
[C] [B]
[F]
[A]
[G]
G422D104.WMF [I] [H] The roller [G] is moved into contact with the exit roller [C] again by the exit roller release solenoid when the read sensor [I] detects the trailing edge of the original.
When the exit sensor [H] detects the trailing edge of the original, the original is sent again to the exit tray through the scanner, past the registration roller [D], first [E], second transport roller [F] and exit roller [C] without scanning at this time. This ensures that the original will be correctly stacked front side down in the exit tray.

G422D900.WMF
The CCD generates three analog video signals. The AFE (Analog Front End processor) on the SBU (Sensor Board Unit) converts these analog signals to 10-bit digital signals. It sends these digital signals to the MCB (Main Control Board) board through the LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signaling). The CPU on the MCB processes the image, and then the image data is sent to the network or to a local printer through the NIB or the SCSI-2 controller.

IMAGE PROCESSING
Magnification
The CPU on the MCB enlarges or reduces the image data in the scan direction. Changing the scanning speed does reduction and enlargement in the sub scan direction.

Color resolution
Because of the differences in color space, the color observed by a person, and the color value sensed by the CCD can vary. Color resolution corrects the color data gathered by the CCD. It uses a color table that adjusts for the way particular colors are displayed on specific CRTs. This allows a more-natural representation of the scanned image. This also changes RGB signals to YMC signals. After adjusting color resolution, this changes YMC signals to RGB signals again.
Background erase
Background can be erased with this function using threshold value.
Filtering
There are two software filters: the MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) filter and the smoothing filter. The MTF filter emphasizes sharpness, and is used with documents that contain both text and photo areas. The smoothing filter is only used for photo-image documents.

IMAGE PROCESSING
Scale processing
This process generates image densities of up to 256 levels for each pixel. It uses simple binary, dithering, and error diffusion processing. Simple binary processing sets the level based on a threshold value. There are no shades of gray. The output is black or white only. Dither processing is used to reproduce originals with continuous tones, such as photographs on machines that cannot output true grayscales. It produces different shades of gray by creating patterns of black and white dots. There are no gray dots. The error diffusion process reduces the difference in contrast between light and dark areas of a halftone image. Each pixel is corrected using the difference between it and the surrounding pixels. The corrected pixels are then compared with a matrix table. Error diffusion is often used in text/photo mode. It is a good compromise because it reduces the contrast between light and dark areas of halftone images, while having no effect on letter areas.
