CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION AND BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORGANISATION The four (4) months industrial training exercise was initiated by the federal government, under the ministry of education in 1971. It is designed to help students acquire practical educational experience in various fields of study and to equip students in various institutions to face any technical work, which always put them in a better position as an engineer. This industrial training also provide students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge in real work situation thereby bridging the gap between theory and practical. I was opportune to perform my industrial training in Ike mobile services Nigeria limited located at no 35 kreiggani road Omoku in ogba/egbema/ndoni local government area of rivers state. It is an indigenous maintenance, procurement/support (materials and labour), construction equipment leasing, sales and services of plants and equipment as well as the repair and maintenance of petrol engines/diesel plants such as Gm, Vm, caterpillars, lister, generators, dentz and general contractors etc. The company was incorporated in Nigeria as a private limited liability company on the 20th of October 1997 with registration number rc322548 and with an email: ikemobile@yahoo.com. the company/organization was registered as contractors to different companies such as; elf petroleum Nigeria limited, now total E & P Nigeria limited in 1997, Sharon Nigeria limited and Nigeria Agip oil company and major oil producing and services companies in the Niger delta area. The company operate under an organizational chart to enable them achieve her goals and objective. Below is the structural view of the Ike mobile services Nigeria limited.

CHAPTER TWO SUMMARY OF WORK DONE IN THE FIRST MONTH

During my first month in the company I was given orientation about the company I was fully introduced to various staff, supervisors and workers both skillful and unskillful. I was oriented on the basic rules and regulations benefit/essence of applying various workshop safety rules and regulations. I was also educated on the various engineering working tools. I was taught the circulation of oil in an engine, where balancing and the various step undertaken during the servicing of a vehicle especially when the vehicle has run for 5,000 (five thousand) kilometer. I was also taught various causes of top cylinder gasket damages, the implication/signs given when damaged and the method of value grinding which is to create more induction and the various ways employ in replacing damaged piston and connecting rod in the engine block which in all comprises the dismantling and coupling of an engine. Furthermore, I was taught the procedure for cleaning nuzzle, causes of smoky exhaust and remedy, causes of overheating in a vehicle and remedies and the lubricating system of the crankshaft to avoid friction during rotation.

CHAPTER THREE SUMMARY OF WORK DONE IN THE SECOND MONTH

In the second month, I was introduced on how to handle air compressor, the various function of air compressor and how to identify risk and hazard when handling air compressor. I was also permitted to decouple a four stroke engine of which i did though not perfectly done but at least I was able to change some of the damaged component such a s piston and connecting rod, top engine gasket etc as well as lubricating the crank shaft to avoid friction which may as well increase its life span. I was also taught the preserving and storing method of an engine, i.e. the steps taken before storing an engine for a very long time without using it, I was also taught how to change a primer for steady pump of fuel, changing of oil seal for preventing oil from flowing into the wall of the combustion chamber and changing of cam follower in the top cylinder. Lastly, I was taken to electrical department for two days; there I learnt the function of battery, the working principle and how to shot down a machine in case of an emergency.

CHAPTER FOUR SUMMARY OF WORK DONE IN THE THIRD MONTH

During the third month I was fully introduced and oriented on how the internal combustion engine work which is the combustion of fuel (fossil fuel) with an oxidizer (air) in a combustion chamber to generate an expansion of temperature and pressure gases which directly applies forces to a movable component of the engine, such as the pistons or turbine blades and by moving it over a distance to generate useful mechanical energy. I was also introduced to the four and two stroke engines, which involves the movement of a piston in an oscillatory motion. The first stroke cycle involve the drawing of air and fuel through the carburetor whereas the second stroke cycle which is the down stroke compresses the air and fuel drawn from the carburetor (upward stroke), then the fuel is fired.

CHAPTER FIVE SUMMARY OF WORK DONE IN THE FOURTH MONTH

During the fourth month, I was introduced on engine rotation, firing order of two stroke engine, four stroke engine, six stroke engine and eight stroke engine as well as servicing of crankshaft and cylinder sleeve. Through the help of some skilled workers, I was permitted to wash a caterpillar radiator through the use of washing machine. I was exposed and permitted to change damaged petrol engine, chain ray, exhaust gasket, and engine sitting. I was also introduced on the difference between manual automatic gear, the working principle, the default and method of rectification which may either involve replacing it with new gear or repairing the gear. Lastly, i was exposed to the working principle of a hydraulically operated brake from where it will grip the wheel disc firmly.

CHAPTER SIX DIFFICULTIES/PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED DURING THE TRAINING AND SUGGESTION

DIFFICULTIES/PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED The industrial training posses so many problems to the student which include Difficulty in finding a suitable place for the training: this is obvious since the government or the school does not post any student to the company where he can do the training. The student has to suffer long trekking, spend much money, and endure disappointments and so on before securing a place. I had submitted several application letters to many organizations and government agencies yet all prove abortive, but good citizen directed me to the company where I served.

Transportation to and from the place of service was much on me since the place is far from where stayed. I spent about two hundred naira (N200) everyday. Another problem is that of payment: so many companies reasoned that they are helping or teaching you who you are suppose to pay for. Because of this they are not ready to pay the students.

SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS TO THE DIFFICULTIES/PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED Siwes coordinators should consider the above problems before posting students. I suggest that the allowance assigned to students should be increased to help the students during the period of the industrial training. I also suggest that siwes coordinators of every tertiary institution should try as much as they can to post student directly to a place where they can serve to limit the state of suffering for space during the period of the industrial training. Federal government should put industrialization in their scale of preference so as to enable students attach with companies and industries easily. Government should build companies so that there will always be available companies for the training.

CHAPTER SEVEN SUMMARY, RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION SUMMARY Cordially, my industrial work experience in Ike mobile services Nigeria limited was interesting and beneficial to me as a mechanical engineering student. The exercise got me exposed to many things i should know about my course of study. It gave me a room to perform series of activities on servicing and maintenance of vehicles. It has also exposed me to the competition and other things involved in the labour market. RECOMMENDATION With my level of exposure in industrial training, i recommend the following: That the supervised industrial training should continue and that students should be adequately supervised by the institution supervisors. Students in the program should be mentally prepared to face the realities of work and there should be adequate orientation to enlighten the students on the need to enroll on the program. That this training be made compulsory for all students for them to be adequately exposed in their field of study. It gives the student opportunity of securing an employment chance in the company after their program.

CONCLUSION
To conclude, the idea of the supervised industrial work experience scheme (siwes) is a very good idea. It has prepared me for the future in the labour market. It also helps me improve my knowledge on the field of servicing and maintenance of vehicles.
