A Lesson Plan on Netiquette

This lesson, which is grounded in the constructivist school of thought, utilizes mobile devices such as the Ipod Touch to create a student-centered learning experience in which students can learn about netiquette, or digital etiquette. As stated by Land and Hannafin (2000, p. 12), student-centered learning environments need to: (a) be learner-centered, (b) be situated in authentic contexts, (c) provide opportunities for student interaction, (d) draw on prior experience; and, (e) incorporate technology in order to facilitate higher-order thinking. Based on the above criteria, this lesson would be considered constructivist in nature because: (a) it gives the students the opportunity to make decisions about how they want to proceed with their research into netiquette, (b) students are developing a blog and commenting by focusing on the rules of proper netiquette in order to situate their learning, (c) students will be interacting by commenting on one anothers blog posts, (d) students will be reflecting on their prior experiences of proper and improper netiquette; and, (e) mobile learning devices and apps are incorporated in order to scaffold learning.

Or, have you ever sent a message in haste that you later regretted sending and wished that you could take back?

Conclusion
Transfer Learning
Example script: The next time you go to press SEND on that email or text message, read your message again. Think carefully about the words you have chosen and whether or not they communicate the message you are trying to convey. Is there any way your words can be misconstrued? Once you are comfortable that you have followed the proper rules of netiquette, press SEND, relax and wait for the reply. Likewise, the next time you receive a message that rubs you the wrong way, consider that maybe the sender was having a bad day or, perhaps, he or she isnt aware of the proper rules of netiquette. This might be a good opportunity to test your netiquette by writing a tactful, calm, communicative reply.

Re-motivate and Close

Example script: Unfortunately, there will always be people out there who forget that on the other side of the computer screen or smart phone, there is a human being with feelings and emotions. But, now that you know the rules of proper netiquette, youre well on your way to making the internet a friendlier place.
