"...for similar levels of heart rate and oxygen consumption, the magnitude of the biomechanical stimuli is greater with jumping on a trampoline than with running, a finding that might help identify acceleration parameters needed for the design of remedial procedures to avert deconditioning in persons exposed to weightlessness." The feeling of weightlessness you feel as you're jumping up and down on a rebounder is nothing short of exhilarating! It happens because for a split second after jumping up, just before you come down, you are actually weightless! Not only does the brain love this, but you come down with an extra G-force (jumping increases the G-force). Our body weight normally measures 1 G, but 4 G is the most efficient for oxygen absorption. N.A.S.A. found that the jumping movement of rebounding often falls around 4-G's. This causes the ratio of oxygen consumption to be more than twice as efficient as treadmill running: "While trampolining, as long as the G-force remained below 4-G's, the ratio of oxygen consumption compared to biomechanical conditioning was sometimes more than twice as efficient as treadmill running." In fact, N.A.S.A. has been using rebounding to train their astronauts for over twenty years. That's because N.A.S.A. found that rebounding is 68% more efficient than treadmills, running or other forms of exercise. N.A.S.A. also discovered that rebounding was extremely helpful in rebuilding the bone mass and muscle mass that astronauts lose in the weightlessness of space. Doctors agree with NASA: "Never in my 35 years as a practicing physician have I found any exercise method, for any price, that will do more for the physical body than rebound exercise." -Henry Savage, M.D.
