Information on the MBSS charging methods With the MBSS you can insert one battery or two batteries for sequential charging or conditioning, independently of one another. After inserting a second battery, the battery which will probably take the shortest time to be processed is given priority, even if the first battery has already begun to be charged. Charging always has priority over conditioning. This ensures that an operational battery is available in the shortest possible time. The approved types of batteries listed in Section 1 can be combined randomly and inserted into the charging bays of the MBSS. The MBSS charging process depends on the respective type of battery inserted. The charging process, like the setting and monitoring of all charging parameters, takes place automatically.

5.1

Pulse charging method for NiCd batteries

In the case of batteries with NiCd cells, the MBSS works with a very special pulse charging method controlled by a microcontroller. With this method the battery is charged with very high current and periodically, for a short time, it is discharged with an even higher current. The MBSS battery charger converts more energy in a short time into charging current than conventional constant current chargers preventing the so-called memory effect to a large extent. With this pulse charging method, NiCd battery packs are charged very quickly, but gently. This charging method can significantly increase the service life of your batteries. Batteries which have a reduced capacity because of the memory effect, may even regain a higher capacity. Note The memory effect in NiCd batteries occurs when batteries which are not completely discharged are recharged using a conventional method. Under those conditions, batteries may lose a significant part of their original nominal capacity In the case of HIGHPAK-12 LITHIUM TECHNOLOGY batteries, no memory effect occurs.

Page 8

User Manual "MBSS"

5.2

CCCV charging method for SLA and

HIGHPAK-12 batteries

SLA and HIGHPAK-12 LITHIUM TECHNOLOGY batteries are charged with constant current At a later stage in charging the voltage is kept at a constant level and charging continues with a constantly descending current until charging is completed. This charging method, which is regulated by means of a microcontroller charges your HIGHPAK-12 batteries especially fast and gently according to a precisely tuned charging algorithm. Owing to their chemical properties, SLA batteries require a significantly longer time to charge than NiCd or HIGHPAK-12 LITHIUM TECHNOLOGY - batteries Note
HIGHPAK-12 LITHIUM TECHNOLOGY batteries are only compatible with the MBSS from firmware version V4.1 up. For devices with earlier firmware versions, please request an update from your Medtronic customer services or from the manufacturer, AD Elektronik GmbH.

Power supply Mains operation The "MBSS" can be operated via a mains plug at 100 V~ to 240 V~ (AC), at a supply frequency of 50 Hz or 60 Hz. For connection use the power cord included in the scope of supply only. Battery operation The MBSS can be operated via a low voltage socket with DC voltage of 11.0 V to 16.0 V and is therefore suitable for direct connection to the 12 V on-board power supply in an ambulance. Attention! For connection purposes use only the 12 V connecting cable enclosed with the "MBSS Wall Mount V2", item no. 82300009 If required, you can also obtain a space-saving 12V connector cable with a 90 plug, item no. 82300038 from your Medtronic customer service. WARNING! Direct low voltage supply via 16.0 V causes damage to the device. In vehicles with a 24V on-board power supply the MBSS can only be operated via a 24V/12V voltage converter at 12V(DC) or a 24V/12V voltage converter at 230V (AC). Please contact your Medtronic (Physio-Control) customer services or manufacturer, AD Elektronik GmbH.

Dual power supply When operated in an ambulance with mains voltage supplied from the outside, a mains cable can be connected at the same time as the 12V connector cable. To relieve the strain on the vehicle battery, mains operation has priority if there is a simultaneous, dual voltage supply. The changeover, e.g. to connect the vehicle to an external mains socket, takes place without interruption for the MBSS. Warning ! The function display "Operation" does not distinguish between different input voltages. Attention! In the case of dual voltage supply with mains and 12V the MBSS is operated via the 12V connection if the mains switch is switched to the Off position.

Control To operate the MBSS, there is no need for it to be set it manually. Therefore, there are no controls beside the mains switch (O/I). Warning ! The mains switch disconnects the device from the mains power supply only. In case of low voltage power, e.g. from a power supply of a vehicle, the plug must be disconnected. Attention! Owing to the low consumption in the "standby" mode, the MBSS can remain switched on at standby in vehicles for some time. If the vehicle is left standing for more than 3 days, without the charge in the vehicle battery being maintained, the MBSS should be disconnected from the vehicles on-board power supply by disconnecting the lower -voltage plug to prevent the vehicle battery from discharging.

10. Commissioning and operating conditions Connect the MBSS via an earthed safety plug and/or the 12V connection of the vehicles on-board power supply. Only use the correct original connector cable from the manufacturer and pay heed to the permissible connected loads according to Section 6, or on the type plate. Switch the mains switch to the "I" position during mains operation Attention! The mains switch is for use with the mains power supply only. It has no effect on any low voltage power supply that may be connected to the device. If a low voltage power supply is used with the device, this power supply can only be turned off by disconnecting the low voltage cable. Owing to the low consumption in the standby mode, the MBSS can remain switched on at standby in vehicles for some time. If the vehicle is left standing for more than 3 days, without the charge in the vehicle battery being maintained, the MBSS should be disconnected from the vehicles on-board power supply by unplugging lower voltage plug to prevent the vehicle battery from discharging. When the device is operational the green "MBSS operational" operation indicator light illuminates. Note If the MBSS is connected to mains and 12V at the same time, if the mains switch is switched on, operation via mains voltage always has priority. If the mains switch is switched off or there is a voltage supply failure, the MBSS is then operated without interruption on 12V. The operation display does not distinguish between the supply voltages. Operate the MBSS only in a dry, well-ventilated place. Do not expose the device to direct sunlight or radiation from other sources of heat. Attention! Make sure that the air circulation around the device is not impeded. Operate the MBSS only within the temperature range between 0C and +40C at a relative humidity between 35% and 80% (non-condensation forming). Warning! Batteries charged outside the permissible temperature range may not reach their full capacity, suffer irreversible damage to the cell structure as well as initiating the "Battery Error" error message on the MBSS.

Page 14

User Manual "MBSS"

11. "CHARGING" - Battery charging mode Insert a battery into one of the charging bays. You may choose any charging bay, once you have started operating the MBSS. Always make sure the clip of the battery is facing the outside of the MBSS. Only insert the approved types of batteries as listed in Section 1. The approved types of batteries listed can be combined and inserted at random into the charging bays of the MBSS. For example NiCd 1.2Ah / NiCd 2.4Ah or NiCd / HIGHPAK-12 LITHIUM, etc. The securing clip must snap into position audibly. Always make sure the battery is properly secured. By means of the relevant "CHARGING" or "CONDITIONING" display beneath the charging bay, you must check if the battery has been inserted correctly and has been identified by the MBSS. Note If you insert a battery while another battery is being charged or conditioned, this display is only made if, owing to a priority criterion, the MBSS switches over to the battery inserted last. Battery charging is completed when the display "READY" lights up below the battery concerned. Attention! A battery should not be removed and operated until the "CHARGING" function has been completed and the "READY" display lights up. Charged batteries can remain in the charging bay until they are required and the charge maintenance function keeps them constantly on standby. Overcharging is not possible. Note If two batteries are inserted for charging or conditioning at once, the battery which will probably take the shortest time to be processed is given priority This ensures that a fully charged battery is available in the shortest possible time. The MBSS always gives priority to "Smart Battery" batteries Charging always has priority over conditioning. Caution! The inserted batteries are secured by a clip. Take the battery out of the charging bay by pressing the clip at the indented area on the left or right side of the clip, respectively.

User Manual "MBSS"

Page 15

Average charging times The duration of the charging process of the batteries depends on the nominal capacity and the remaining charge. To estimate the expected charge time, the following data can be used: Medtronic "FASTPAK NiCd" at 1,0 Ah: Medtronic " FASTPAK 2 NiCd" at 1.2 Ah: Medtronic "LIFEPAK NiCd" at 1.7 Ah: Medtronic " LIFEPAK NiCd" at 2.4 Ah: Medtronic " LIFEPAK SLA" at 2.5 Ah: HIGHPAK-12 LITHIUM TECHNOLOGY at 4.8 Ah: approx. 25 minutes approx. 30 minutes approx. 40 minutes approx. 60 minutes approx. 2.5 hours approx. 2.5 hours

Monitoring and termination of charging process There are several criteria which ensure safe termination of the charging process at the same time. During charging or conditioning the device continuously monitors the charging curve of the battery. If the values are beyond the normal range, the MBSS interrupts the charging process with a "Battery error" error message as described in Section 13. Immediately after the charging process the MBSS performs a loading test to ensure the functional safety of the battery. If the battery is not reliably functional, here too a "Battery failed" error message appears as described in Section 13. If the error message is repeated, have the battery checked by your customer services. Attention! Battery should not be removed and operated until the "CHARGING" function has been completed and the "READY" display lights up.

Page 16

User Manual "MBSS"

12. "CONDITIONING" - Battery conditioning mode For the purpose of battery care the MBSS has a "CONDITIONING" function. In order to reduce the "memory effect" in this operating mode the NiCd or SLA are charged once, then completely discharged and finally fully charged again. Owing to their lithium technology HIGHPAK-12 batteries are completely free of the memory effect and are never conditioned. The NiCd and SLA batteries manufactured by Medtronic (Physio-Control) with the "Smart Battery Technology" call this function automatically at specific intervals after the batteries have been inserted into the MBSS if: - The battery had been in storage for longer than 30 days - The battery had run right down - Conditioning has not been performed for over 90 days Note Under certain circumstances the automatic intervals should be shortened, for example if the batteries have frequently been only partially discharged. For this purpose call the "CONDITIONING" function manually.

12.1 Calling the "CONDITIONING" function manually If battery care is required for NiCd and SLA batteries outside of the automatic intervals or in the case of NiCd and SLA batteries without "Smart Battery technology", it is possible to call the "CONDITIONING" function manually. Insert the battery as described in Section 11. After the "CHARGING" indicator lamp lights up, take the battery out of the charging bay. The display changes to "CONDITIONING" for approx. 3 seconds. Return the battery to the charging bay while the "CONDITIONING" display is still illuminated.

Note
HIGHPAK-12 LITHIUM TECHNOLOGY batteries are maintenance-free. Lithium cells are

complete free of the "memory effect" and do not require conditioning. Hence the "CONDITIONING" function cannot be called manually for the HIGHPAK-12 battery.

User Manual "MBSS"

Page 17

Aborting the "CONDITIONING" function If you want to skip or abort conditioning of a battery, take the battery out of the charging bay when the "CONDITIONING" display is lights up. The display changes to "CHARGING" for approx. 3 seconds. During this time re-insert the battery. If conditioning is requested automatically by the battery, the "CONDITIONING" function will be performed again when the battery is inserted the next time. Attention! Batteries should not be removed and operated until the "CONDITIONING" or "CHARGING" function has been completed and the "READY" indicator lamp has lit up.

Average conditioning times The duration of the conditioning process of the batteries depends on the nominal capacity and the remaining charge. To estimate the expected conditioning time, the following data can be used a basis: FASTPAK NiCd at 1.0 Ah: FASTPAK 2 NiCd at 1.2 Ah: LIFEPAK NiCd at 1.7 Ah: LIFEPAK NiCd at 2.4 Ah: LIFEPAK SLA at 2.5 Ah: HIGHPAK-12 LITHIUM at 4.8 Ah: approx. 2 hours approx. 2 hours approx. 3 hours approx. 4 hours approx. 6 hours No conditioning required

The end of the conditioning process Conditioning is completed by a full charging process. The same concluding test criteria apply as for the charging process as described in Section 11.

Page 18

13. "FAILED" - Error messages In case of premature interruption of the charging process the following error codes will be displayed and the causes will be indicated by different LEDs. In addition to the display, an acoustic alarm will sound for approximately 5 seconds. Error 1: "Device error" => All LEDs flashing or both LEDs "FAILED" permanently lit up Cause 1: Interruptions or variations in power supply Solution: Switch the device off by disconnecting it from the power supply and reconnect it after 10 seconds. Cause 2: Overheating of the MBSS e.g. when exposed to direct sunlight Solution: Disconnect the device from the power supply and let it cool for some minutes. Restart the device. Error 2: "Battery error" => The "FAILED" display beneath the charging bay permanently lit up Cause 1: Data communication error between battery and "MBSS" Cause 2: Contact bounce when inserting the battery Solution: Take the battery out of the bay and try again after 10 second or restart the device by interrupting the supply voltage. If, after this interval, the error occurs again, the battery may be overheated, damaged or unserviceable because of its age. Please have the battery checked by your customer services Cause 3: Unapproved battery inserted Solution: Insert only battery types into the MBSS that are listed in Section 1.

Error 3: "Power supply too low" => Both LEDs "FAILED" flashing Cause 1: Power supply to MBSS too low, e.g. because of low voltage of vehicle battery. Solution: Disconnect the MBSS from the on-board voltage until the vehicle battery is charged or operate the MBSS via mains voltage. Cause 2: Undersupply to the MBSS owing to the vehicle starter being used for longer than about 15 seconds with a weak vehicle battery. Solution: Switch the MBSS off and on again by disconnecting the supply voltage. Check your vehicle battery.
