AIR IN SOIL

Soil air differs fundamentally from the air in the atmosphere, since its main components are the oxygen and carbon dioxide. The amount ofoxygen contained in the atmosphere of the floor is slightly lower than theatmospheric air. Inferiority which increases as the soil flooding is greater. Conversely, carbon dioxide (carbon dioxide) significantly more abundantin the soil into the atmosphere. This is due to respiration of roots and some chemical reactions in the soil organic matter, producing CO2.

Air In Soil About half of the total mass of soil is made of up vast interconnecting cavities, or holes. These holes are filled with both air, and water. The amount of air and the amount of water filling these spaces varies dramatically throughout the year, and from location to location, but averages about 50% each. The air found is soil is very different from the air found in the atmosphere. The air in soils is not exposed to moving air currents, and is much more moist, or humid than atmospheric air. It also tends to be very rich in carbon dioxide, and poor in oxygen. Oxygen is removed by living organisms, and carbon dioxide is left behind. This carbon dioxide leaks out of the soil, slowly replenishing the atmospheres carbon dioxide supplies.

Ideally the atmospheric phase is 25%, another 25% water and 50% forthe solid phase. It is recognized that a percentage of 10% air is insufficient. Is assumed to have a composition similar to that of atmospheric air, but much less constant. Air-ground atmospheric air%% Oxygen 21 10-20 78 Nitrogen 78.5 to 80 0.03 CO2 0.2 to 3

Variable steam saturation The average composition of soil air varies not only with the depth of theair but with seasonal changes. In periods of increased biological activity(spring and fall), there is less O2 and CO2 (figure). Soil air shows mainly local variations in the content of O2 and CO2. On the floor are less than in air O2 and CO2. This is explained by all theprocesses occurring in soil and involving the consumption of O2 and release of CO2, ie those reactions involving all soil organisms: plant respiration, activity of microorganisms, mineralization and oxidation processes. The air in the soil is in continuous exchange with atmospheric air and thanks to this constant renewal of soil air becomes unbreathable. This movement can be accomplished by moving mass or by diffusi
