Grammar and structure focus

Singular personal subject pronouns: eu, tu, voc, o senhor, a senhora, ele, ela
eu tu (familiar) voc ( formal) o senhor (mas., polite) a senhora (fem.,polite) ele ela I you you you, sir you, madam he / it she / it

Note: The Portuguese subject pronoun is not normally expressed in Portuguese but is indicated in the verb
ending: (Eu) gosto de cerveja. (Tu) gostas de cerveja. (Voc) gosta de cerveja. (Ele) gosta de cerveja. (Ela) gosta de cerveja. - I like beer. - You like beer. - You like beer. - He likes beer. - She likes beer.

However, use the subject pronoun with the verb if there could be any ambiguity or for emphasis:
- Onde est ele? - Onde est ela? - Eu que trabalho aqui , no ele. Where is he? Where is she? I am the one who works here, not him. (It is I who works here, not he (him.)

Note: ele / ela will also translate the neuter it :

- Onde est o livro? - (Ele) est em cima da mesa. - Onde est a caneta? - (Ela) est no meu bolso.. - O que aquilo? - (Ele) um carro. -O que aquilo? - (Ela) uma cadeira.. Where is the book? It is on the table.

Where is the pen? It is in my pocket. Whats that? It is a car. Whats that? It is a chair. .

Nevertheless, the personal pronouns would always be omitted in these last examples.

B.

You can be rendered into Portuguese in many different ways, namely:

Tu ( you, familiar) is used among friends, relatives, and in addressing children: Tu s meu amigo. Tu s muito bonita. You are my friend. You are very pretty.

Voc ( you, informal, not familiar) is used mainly between persons who are not very familiar with one another: Voc um bom aluno. Voc Ingls/Americano. You are a good student. You are English/American.

O senhor ( you sir) is a polite form used when addressing a man demanding command or respect: O senhor o meu chefe. O senhor quer um quarto individual? You are my boss. The gentleman wants a single room?(Do you want a single room, sir?

A senhora ( you madam) is a polite form used when addressing a woman demanding command or respect: A senhora fala portugus? A senhora deseja mais alguma coisa? The lady speaks Portuguese?(Do you speak Portuguese, madam? The lady wants anything else?(Do you want anything else, madam?

Note: Ser indicates an inherent or essential characteristic, condition, quality or permanent state or
location: - Eu sou portugus.

Youre a friend. you are married He is a nervous person. She is intelligent. Where is the Supervisors office? We are friends. You are American. They are friendly/nice.

Be careful: e = and ( voc e eu = you and me) = is/it is (Ele) um livro. = It is a book)

where from?

Use the word donde to ask about what / which point or place of origin: Donde o senhor? (formal) Donde s tu? (talking to a youngster) Donde ela? Where are you from, sir? Where are you from? Where is she from?
