Stopping to smell the roses

I wish I had the kind of personality where I could do just one thing at a time. Im not that fortunate. I have to be doing a couple things at one time. I cannot just sit and watch television or just enjoy eating a meal. I have to be doing something else. When Im watching television I may be doing something on my laptop or filling out some type of form. While Im eating I find myself reading a book or in desperation reading the menu from top to bottom. Im not sure where this trait came from, but I think it has gone on for ages. Im sure it started in the pioneer days when women would be feeding a baby with one hand and making three apple pies and bread for supper with the other. Then when radio came into being, I doubt if many people just sat by the radio and listened. The men were probably whittling something in wood and the women were sewing or crocheting a warm quilt or blanket for the winter. Now with modern conveniences we find ourselves often doing three things at once. I wonder how many students are doing their homework while watching the television while tweeting messages to a friend. It seems to get more complicated as we get more technology. Even on vacation I have a hard time just sitting and enjoying the scenery. It takes me a while to unwind enough to get to that point and even then Im checking my cell phone for text messages I may have missed. I am trying to stick to only two multi-tasks at a time though. If I get a phone call I put the television on mute to block the sound. Unfortunately though I catch myself trying to read the subtitles while Im conversing. to keep up with the show. Then suddenly I get a message on my computer that a friend wants to talk online. Then I discover Ive broken my golden rule and am doing three things at once. All I can say to myself is Stop and smell the roses once in a while. I shouldnt feel like I should also be watering and fertilizing them while taking a close up picture of the rose, too.

Ottawa Elementary second-graders prepare for a swim lesson at the Putnam County YMCA.

Y teaching second-graders to swim

By NANCY KLINE
nkline@putnamvoice.com 419-231-2444

OTTAWA A pilot program is underway at the Putnam County YMCA. Second grade students from Ottawa Elementary are taking part in a YMCA Begin to Swim curriculum. The YMCA has a goal of expanding this program to all second graders in the county. Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death for children age 1-14 years old, said Lori Featherolf, director at the Y. With this in mind and because of the large number of pools and ponds in the county I started thinking about how we could help our kids stay safe in and around water. Featherolf said they have chosen to focus on teaching stroke development and water safety skills to second graders because research has shown that 8-9 year olds tend to be more daring and may not fully comprehend the dangers of deep water. Students

taking part in this program learn to be safety conscious in and around water. They learn pool rules, survival skills and boating safety. The students also learn the consequences of their choices in relation to water safety. They are taught paddling skills, treading and floating, when to

yell for help and safety using lifejackets. The pilot program with Ottawa Elementary has 35 students participating. As this program expands there is the potential to have over 500 kids participating, Featherolf said. The class is currently taught by

Featherolf and Peg Morman. All of the kids come in excited to learn, Featherolf said. It is wonderful to see a child who on the first day is afraid or uncomfortable in the water. And by the end of the week has learned to get their face wet and even begin to swim a little. Featherolf said is it satisfying to know that what the students have learned may one day save their life. With the YMCA being one of the largest providers of swimming lessons in the country it was important for me to see this program get off of the ground, Featherolf said. It is a valuable experience for the youth as it may be the first many of these kids have had any structured swim lessons or even been in a pool. She said with school funds being limited it is also important to the Y that they do not charge for the program. I never want money to be a reason why a child doesnt learn to swim, Featherolf said.

Stowe turning gallery into a museum

Stowe Bruce Stowe who has owned the Stowe Antique and Fine Arts Gallery in Ottawa has changed the look of his gallery and is changing it into Stowes Art museum. On exhibit are items from the local history of the community and also items from around the world. Among items featured in the museum are a display of items of Miss Frances Horwich, an early television performer with the Ding Dong Show. Miss Frances grew up in Ottawa. Stowe also has Ohio McCoy pottery made in Rossville Ohio and the pulpit from the former Methodist Church in Ottawa. Stowe is offering tours by appointment to individuals and groups. He also invites anyone to stop by and visit the museum if they see the open sign at his 937 North Defiance Street (SR 15) location in Ottawa. I also will have a gift shop in the museum, Stowe said. He originally opened his gallery in 1990. Those wanting to make an appointment to visit the museum can do so by emailing stoweart@bright.net. You can also see more pictures of the museum online at www.putnamvoice. com

County should widen Road 5

To the editor, As a frequent user of Road 5 between Leipsic and Pandora Ive come across accident scenes and observed many near accidents on the road. It is so narrow that it is a miracle that semis dont smack each others rear view mirrors when they pass. It is difficult for farmers like myself to transport tillage tools and planters on it. The widening is especially needed now that ProTecs expansion is taking place. The 30 or so people protesting its widening want I-75 south truck traffic to stay on state routes. This is unrealistic time wise and fuel wise. Rerouting Road 5 traffic to SR 65 south or SR235 south would waste around 1 2 hours of the drivers time on a round trip. A typical semi burns 7 gallons of fuel an hour so you do the math. The people protesting the widening are hurting the countys progress. The factories in Leipsic pay their employees very well and the trickle down effect helps just about every person in the county to some degree. Grants have been made available to the commissioners to pay for the bulk of the project. The commissioners have promised to pay Road 5 landowners a fair appraisal price. At this time the repetitive mantra of the protesters complaining about the project seems more like badgering of the commissioners than anything else. The commissioners were elected to serve all of the countys over 30,000 citizens who want to see Putnam County prosper and the roadways improved. Daryl Bridenbaugh Pandora, OH

Grove family in dentistry for 100 years

By BECKY LEADER
Voice Correspondant

COLUMBUS GROVE And the final Jeopardy answer is: This family practiced dentistry in Columbus Grove for 100 years. Question: Who is the Hilty family? When Mark Hilty, DDS, retired this past fall, his familys dental practice had been a fixture in the Columbus Grove community for 100 years. Dr. Hiltys father, Alvan, graduated from the Ohio College of Dentistry in Cincinnati and began his practice in Columbus Grove in 1911. Mark recalled, My father had to use a foot pump for power until the electricity was turned on at night. Alvans office was open on Wednesday and Saturday nights, as that was when people came to town to shop. Patients often paid the dentist in goods, rather than in cash. Dr. Hilty said, I always knew I wanted to be in dentistry. As a member of the Columbus Grove High School Class of 1943, he intended to enter college right out of high school. He explained, I got interrupted; Uncle Sam wanted me. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II in the European Theater, the Asiatic Theater, and the Philippines. When he got out of the service in 1946, Dr. Hilty went to The Ohio State University, where he earned his degree in 1952. His brother, Donald, also an OSU graduate, had already joined their father in the family practice. The Hiltys built their current office in 1940, when Donald joined the practice, and expanded it in 1952, after Mark graduated, to accommodate additional patients. The three men practiced together for forty years. Mark was in practice for 59 years, during which time he estimated he treated three to four thousand people. It was very important to him to complete the one hundred-year milestone! Dr. Hilty recalled some memorable moments from his practice. He treated many patients who had injuries to their front teeth. He said one time, two young sisters were fighting, and one threw a telephone at the other, resulting in a chipped tooth. He related another occasion in which a 140-pound teen got into

BECKY LEADER Putnam Voice

Marge and Mark Hilty worked together for 59 years. a fight on the way to school with a 250-pound schoolmate. The smaller youngster had his tooth knocked out during the scuffle, and could not find it. Dr. Hilty had to make a replacement for him. Another patient was working the chains at a football game and inadvertently got in on a play, which resulted in a tooth being knocked out. People often presented themselves to the dentist with sports-related mouth injuries. He remembered, It seemed that 10 minutes after a game, a kid would be at the door with a broken or missing tooth. I always put the tea kettle on to make some cocoa (after arriving home from the games). I burned up a few tea kettles because I was working on the kids! Dr. Hilty began completing postgraduate studies before it was required by the State. He believed it was important to keep current with the changes, especially technology, in the industry. In 1957, he attended a class pertaining to athletic mouth guards. Because he recognized the effects that sports injuries had on students dental health, he approached the Columbus Grove School administrators to encourage the use of mouth guards. This resulted in Dr. Hilty donating mouth guards for Columbus Grove School athletes, a practice he has continued to date. According to Dr. Hilty, the technology in dentistry is amazing! He was especially impressed with the advent of the laser, which expanded his capabilities in the field. He chuckled, I really wanted a boat. But the laser came out, so I bought the laser instead! Dr. Hilty credited his wife, Marge, as being an integral part of his practice. The couple, which was introduced by a cousin at church, married in 1950. Marge graduated from the OSU Dental Hygiene School in 1951. She laughed, My license is #375 in Ohio! The couple worked side-by-side the entire length of Marks tenure. When asked the secret of working together and being happily married, Mark quickly replied, Love conquers all things! Marge readily agreed, adding that her parents had worked together on their farm, so she was used to that type of relationship. She continued, Mark and I have common goals, although we have our own activities. Family always came first! The couple has three children: Lynn, a nurse in Toledo; Mark, a doctor in Rhode Island; and Bruce, the Community Operations Coordinator at the Allen County Metropolitan Housing Authority in Lima. Bruce also founded the Allen County Habitat for Humanity, and is currently the president of that board. If he had to do it all again, Dr. Hilty surmised he would still choose dentistry as a profession, but on my own terms. He was very proud of his personalized family practice. He got to know his patients well, and treated multiple generations of families. Dr. Hilty never advertised his services in the media, as it was frowned upon when he was in school. He joked, I got my patients through word of mouth! Dr. Hilty said he wants to be remembered as a man who was dedicated to family values and community service. He was active in Boy Scouts, and has been a long-time member of the Columbus Grove Lions Club. He has served on the Town Council and Board of Public Affairs. In addition, he is active in the Grace Mennonite Church. The next time you see healthy smiles in Columbus Grove, it may very well be thanks to Dr. Mark Hilty!

Dance/auction to raise money for cancer assistance

The Putnam County Cancer Assistance Program will be hosting their annual dance and auction on Saturday, March 31, at the Kalida Knights of Columbus Hall on state Route 115 in Kalida. The CAP program began in 2004 and since its beginning, CAP has helped many Putnam County residents who are suffering with cancer by reimbursing them for expenses not covered under their insurance programs. Some of the expenses covered are mileage for chemo/radiation treatments, wigs, medication and much more. These benefits are available to all Putnam County cancer patients with no income guidelines. This years benefit is already off to a great start. CAP has gathered more and more support over the past several years and this years event is going to be our greatest success yet. Many wonderful items have been donated for the auction, including a Cub Cadet LTX Model 1042 ride on lawn mower and a Log Splitter Model LS27TB, all donated by Violet Implement in Delphos. Among other items are two hand made toy machine sheds donated anonymously. One machine shed is a Case IH and the other is a John Deere. Both sheds had over 40 hours of labor invested in their completion. These sheds will be auctioned competitively to the highest bidder and biggest Case or John Deere fan! If you would like to have a fun night out, gather your friends and family and come support this very worthwhile cause! Supper will be served at 5:00 and the auction begins at 6:00. Dancing will follow. Admission is $5.00 per person and 50/50 Tickets will be available. Check us out on Facebook and click Like for a chance to win free admission to the event.

with LCC leading 16-9, got his third just over two minutes into the second half and was whistled for his fourth with 2:50 left in the third quarter. O-G took the ball inside early, thinking that possibly it could get LCCs strongest inside presence into foul trouble. LCC led 20-17 at halftime and was in front 31-29, heading into the final quarter. The Titans earned the schools sixth trip to the boys state basketball tournament and their first since 2008, when they won the Division III title. They have won nine of their last 10 games. So, obviously, they are a different team than LCC saw the first time around. O-G will play at 8:30 Thursday in a Division III state semifinal against the winner of a game tonight between Portsmouth and Ironton.

Siefker gets All-State second-team honors

Ottoville 6-foot-2 junior Abby Siefker was named second team all-state on the Division IV All-Ohio girls basketball teams that were released Tuesday by The Associated Press. Siefker, who was First Team All-District, averaged 14.7 points per game. She was also the Putnam County League player of the year.

Late push leads O-G past LCC

By JIM NAVEAU BOWLING GREEN The rematch and the big prize went to Ottawa-Glandorf. The Titans (19-6) dominated the fourth quarter to beat Lima Central Catholic 44-38 in the Division III boys basketball regional championship at Bowling Green State University on Friday night to earn a trip to the state tournament. Junior forward Michael Rosebrock scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter and junior guard T.J. Metzger got four of his gamehigh 16 points in that quarter. Rosebrocks offensive rebound with 47 seconds to play broke a 38-38 tie, then Metzger finished it with four free throws in the final 23 seconds. LCC (22-3) had won the regular-season meeting between the two teams 54-42. But the Thunderbirds found themselves playing from behind much of the night on Friday. LCC (42 percent) outshot O-G (35 percent), but the Titans had a 32-21 rebounding edge. Metzger had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds and got O-G off to a good start with two 3-pointers in the early going. Caleb Siefker and John Lammers also delivered big 3-pointers in the third quarter when O-G built a five-point lead, 29-24, before LCC scored the final seven points of the quarter to take a 31-29 lead into the fourth quarter. Darius West scored 10 points to lead LCC. No other Thunderbird hit double figures. LCC played several stretches of the game without 6-foot, 3-inch senior post player Tyler OConnor, who picked up his second foul early in the second quarter

COMMUNITY

Big Brothers, Sisters looking for mentors

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Putnam County is growing its community based program. The agency wants to serve more children outside a school based setting. However, it can only serve as many children as it has mentors for. BB/BS needs a female and male mentor in the Ottawa area and a male mentor in the Ottoville area. Potential mentors should be 18 or older, have a caring personality and be able to commit to at least five hours a month nurturing a child. Youth served are primarily children in singleparent families, low-income households, or homes where a parent has been incarcerated. In addition, the Allen County Branch is looking for matches for children in the Lima area. If you or someone you know is interested in being a mentor, you can apply online at www. bbbswco.com or contact Melissa Weaver mweaver@ bbbswco.com (419-5234016). Please indicate which county you are interested in serving.

Class book to be published

First-grade students from Sts. Peter & Paul School took a walk to Warren Printing to mail a special package. The students have been working on writing their own story. Each student wrote and illustrated a page in their class book titled First Graders, All Grown Up. The pages are being sent to a publisher and will be made in to a hardcover book soon. Parents had the option to purchase a copy of the book created by their children and one will be available in the Sts. Peter & Paul School library.
