EXAMINATION EXERCISES FOR SUBMISSION Exercise 3 (Chapter 9-10) Please solve the following exercise, and upload the

e solution on Moodle. A Combined cycle: A gas turbine connected to a waste heat boiler with a steam turbine
A combined cycle power plant contains both a gas turbine (Brayton cycle) and a steam turbine (Rankinecykel). Air of 22oC is compressed fom 100 kPa to 800 kPa before it enters the combustion chamber. Coal powder (150 t/h) is added as fuel. After the combustion the temperature has increased to 1400 K. The flue gases are then allowed to expand in a turbine, which powers both the air compressor a generator. The flue gases leaving the turbine is then used for heating pressurised water in a waste heat boiler. The superheated steam from the boiler has the admission data: 70 bar (7MPa) and 500oC. The steam is expanded in a steam turbine and is then condensed at a pressure of 0.10 bar. After the condensor, the water pressure is raised by a feed water pump to 70 bar. The water is then fed back to the boiler, The gas turbine has the isentropic efficienncies of K = 0.80 , T = 0.85 for the compressor and turbine, respectively The steam turbine the isentropic efficiency is:: ST = 0.85

Problems: a. Sketch a flow diagram for the plant , b. Sketch a T-s-diagram for the Brayton-cycle c. Sketch a h-s or a T-s-diagram for the steam cycle d. Calculate the compressor work and the turbine work [kJ/kg air] for hhe Brayton cycle. You may consider the flue gas as air. e. Calculate the work produced in the steam turbine (kJ/kg steam] f. Calculate the work dine by the feed water pump. [kJ/kg water].

g. Calculate the amount of air that has to be supplied fr a stoichiometric combustion of the coal supplied. The air may be assumed to consist of 21 vol-% O2 (21 mol-%) and the rest N2 The coal may be respectively)
h. assumbed to just be pure carbon. (The molar mas for air and carbon are 29 kg/kmol and 12 kg/kmol),

Calculate the flow of flue gas (kg/s)

i.

Determine the amount of superheated steam that is produced in the waste heat boiler. Assume that the flue gases is cooled to a temperature 30oC over the the incoming feed water temperature. You may take Cp for the flue gases as 1.3 kJ/(kg.K). Calculate the surface area of the condensor if the cooling water is heated from 5 to 15oC , and the overall heat transfer coefficient for the heat exchanger is 1.4 kW/m2,oC. (Take T as Tcondensing steam Tcooling water, average )

j.

k. Finally, calculate the total thermal efficiency for tha combine cycle plant. (Wgas turbturbine +Wsteam turbturbine)/Qtot,in
