HARLOW COLLEGE: Life lessons for students l

STUDENTS at Harlow College have been given an eyeopening presentation on how to keep themselves safe whilst out and about. Delivered by Harlow PCSOs Karen Rogers and Phyllis Chipchase, the hard hitting presentation, which featured crime statistics, videos and graphic photos, was given to around 700 students over

four days and covered a range of topics from knife crime and robbery to binge drinking. Students were asked what subjects they wanted the talks to cover as part of their tutorial work. Pauline Leggett, head of student support said: The students could be at risk of these things so we wanted

them to be informed. They have really engaged with it and taken the messages on board. Harlow MP Robert Halfon attended the session on Friday morning. He said: I commend the college, police and Harlow Council for getting together to make this a part of the students learning.

PUPILS at St Marks celebrated World Book Day last week. Author Echo Freer came into the school to talk to pupils in years seven and eight about her work and about being an author. She also ran creative writing workshops for gifted and talented pupils in year nine. Year seven students marked the day by coming to school dressed as their favourite book characters and paraded their costumes during assembly. Tom Robinson was named the best dressed for his Scooby Doo outfit. The students were also entertained by three pupils who dressed in Indian national costume and performed a dance.

PUPILS from Stewards took time out from normal lessons on Tuesday to participate in a range of exciting activities as part of curriculum day. Pupils in year 10 were given an insight into the world of work where they learnt about employment skills and also prepared for their work experience placements. Year seven spent the day doing sporting activities. Other workshops included crosscurricular working between the science and language departments and the PE and art departments. Mrs Erwood said: It was a brilliant day and gave the students a break from the norm to take part in other learning opportunities.

BURNT Mill students enjoyed a half term with a difference as they embarked on a skiing trip to Bardonecchia in Italy. For many of the 22 students on the trip it was a first time experience which had been discussed, planned and looked forward to for more than a year. The group learnt to ski, snowboard and experience sporting activities such as snow shoeing which the students thoroughly enjoyed. Miss L Wright, the trip organiser, said that Burnt Mill students were an asset to Harlow, with their impeccable behaviour and attitude towards new experience and culture. Well done guys!

Dreams to reality

YEAR 10 students from Mark Hall put their brains to the test last month when they took part in a Challenge Day at Cambridge University. The group were shown round the famous university and were also given lectures in linguistics and quantum physics by lecturers at the campus. The aim of the day was to encourage them to think about their future and what it may hold for them, as well as to consider their aims and objectives in life. A school spokesman said: It was a really insightful day into a prestigious university and well done to all the pupils who took part in the challenge.

A TALENT show is to be held at Passmores School this month in memory of a past student who sadly died in 2009. The performance will take place from 7pm on March 31 and is open to any appropriate talent from singing and dancing, to juggling. All students and staff have been invited to take part and are busy preparing to audition for their place on March 23 and 24, during school time. The school is currently trying to raise money to help fund the cost of a headstone for past student Jamie Bone. Entry fee is 3 each for adults and 2 each for under 16s with all proceeds going to the cause. A CAREERS Fair will be taking place at Harlow College this month to help Harlow pupils make some decisions about their future. The event, open to those in years nine to 11, runs at the Velizy Avenue campus from 4pm-7pm, on March 17 and will provide an opportunity to learn more about courses in further and higher education, as well as information on a range of careers. Experts will be on hand to provide advice and guidance to pupils, including the qualifications, skills and characteristics required for certain areas of employment.
