Our cadets taking Orientation Flights! Six of our cadets and one from Lake County Squadron participated in one of the most fun events CAP has to offer: Orientation Flights. During the non-winter months we have an O-Flight scheduled once a month, weather permitting. Each cadet is entitled to 10 flights, 5 glider and 5 powered. This month we had 4 cadets have their first powered flight. Many, MANY thanks to Capt. Mordechai Levin for flying all day, and Lt. Brian Pokuta for arranging the paperwork. If you are interested in Orientation Flights, please see Lt. Kalemis.

I NFORMATION Deadline for all submissions is the 25th of the preceding month. Email submissions to jkalemis@comcast.net, editor or deliver a hardcopy. All photographs are by 1Lt. James Kalemis unless otherwise noted.

E MERGENCY S ERVICES T RAINING

By Capt Corey Stohlquist On Saturday, October 21st, our squadron sponsored an Emergency Services Day at Marengo Ridge Conservation Area, north of Marengo, IL. During the exercise we were able to practice our skills for Ground Team throughout the park. Some of the skills we practiced were pace count, setting up a shelter, finding our locations on a map by terrain association, and line searches. Although the day was overcast, we were fortunate that the rain held off until later in the day when we were done. Attending from our squadron were Lt. Kalemis, Cadet Peterman, and myself. Joining us from Fox Valley Composite Squadron were Lt. Peters and his son Cadet Peters. From Rockford Composite Squadron Capts Randy Lovelace and Jerry Scherer, and cadets Justin Scherer, Jeramee Scherer, and Trevor Kahl. The next planned ES Day will be held at Galt Airport on November 18, where we will continue training for Ground Team and Urban Directional Finding exercises. Hopefully more squadron members will attend this mission. If you would like to start becoming active in Emergency Services, this will be a great opportunity for you. We can help you with the initial requirements to participate. More details is on our website at http://group22.net/mccs/es_qual.html

S TAFF A PPRECIATION
By 1st Lt Esther Medina Our squadron has been growing and with the move to the new facility a lot of changes had to be made. The cadet staff stepped up to the plate admirably and MCCS was up on its feet and running quickly. The squadron is now prospering, in no small part due to the hard work of our cadet commander, C/Capt. DeCraene, and his able cadet staff. We are very fortunate to have a seasoned, professional and dedicated executive staff. Managing a squadron as dynamic as MCCS is not easy. The Cadet staff put in many hours per week on tasks as diverse as planning and setting up schedules, getting supplies, preparing lesson plans and researching guest speakers. Much of the work done by the cadet executive staff is behind the scenes. Many officers and cadets are unaware of how much time and effort goes into making our weekly meetings run smoothly. Cadet staff are also the police of the squadron that enforce the rules and regs - this is one time when cadets really see their staff in action, but there is so much more that they do. The cadet program is designed to be cadet-run and officer supervised. At MCCS cadet staff truly do run the program. In addition, cadet staff are mentors, counselors and instructors, act as squadron representatives and are active in recruitment efforts. We should all be very proud of these cadets. Without their extra effort and skills MCCS would not be the great squadron that it is. The next time you see one of these cadets, make sure you give them a hearty hoorah and thanks for a job well done. EXECUTIVE STAFF C/Capt. Steven DeCraene C/Major Maria Mangano C/2Lt. ple of officers who worked on getting computers and electric lines installed. Cadet DeCraene noticed some sound issues and took it upon himself to do some research into solutions. It is this innovative approach to problem solving that separates leaders from followers. Cadet Hendler noted we needed more lighting and had a solution in hand this week. Lt. Freund spent a recent weekend updating the testing book and making answer keys. It is each one of us who can make a difference to squadron efficiency. Thanks to each of you who exhibit patience as we work on the new challenges. Thank you to each one who is stepping forward to assist. We are making a list of jobs that need to be completed and as soon as we can find a free weekend, we will schedule a work day. We wont let the issues keep us from meeting goals, we wont let the issues cause us to belittle each other, and we wont let the issues keep us from being one of the best. If it is to be, it is up to me. Be your best here and everywhere,

At a recent training event I attended, I was motivated by some of these questions: Have you allowed any dream assassins to foil your plans? When the tough things in life tend to be overwhelming do you give up, or do you find another way around the obstacle? If you have a job interview on the 15th floor and the elevator is out of order, will you take the time, will you take the pain, to reach the top? If someone asks you in a derogatory way, Who do you think you are? Ask them back, Who do you think you are? Do you say to your self, I cant make an impact alone, so I wont do anything.? If it is to be, it is up to me Our squadron is currently facing many challenges. Growing pains, scheduling nightmares, orientation demands and staffing issues. They will all work out and progress smoothly if each one of us continues to progress with our job assignments and follows the chain of command. It is important that each one of us knows our place and we are in it, on time, prepared with needed knowledge and supplies. Remember the leadership model, if you see a job that needs to be done, do it.. I was particularly impressed with a cou-

P LANETS G ONE ?

You look up during the winter and you see beautiful constellations, nebulas, star clusters, and galaxies. But no planets. In fact, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter are all in rough alignment with the Sun, thus hidden from us by its glare. Saturn is the only planet visible in the early morning in the southeast. Yes, if you get up in the wee hours to go to work or school, that bright star in the southeast sky is actually Saturn. But it quickly disappears as the Sun rises. So enjoy our planetless night sky for a while. The Andromeda Galaxy is glorious in the northeast. The Taurus constellation will be rising soon with the Pleiades star cluster. And the Orion constellation will shows us one of Heavens miracles. In December, the planets do something wild in the dawn sky that the cadets will not see again till theyre well in their retirement age. But youll have to wait to next month to find out!

S CHOLARSHIP M ONEY
By Capt Doris Mangano This spring and summer there will be opportunities for cadets to learn about different specialty tracts. There are basic cadet schools called spring and summer encampment. These are required prior to attending any of the National Cadet Summer Activities programs. The majority of these programs cost under $200.00. But here is a way to earn some of that money and develop some friends. November 25th (Thanksgiving Sat. weekend) at the Crystal Lake and Woodstock K-Mart/Sears stores we will be selling candy bars for a $1.00 each. Anyone who works this sale (1100-1600) will receive $25.00 in scholarship toward a spring/summer event. Many cadets last year received more. Normally, we take in $700-800 on that one day! You need blues, a sack lunch and a drink, a chair, and an attitude that you are out in public representing a good organization! We will be located in between the doors, so it does get chilly, but we wont be outside. This event seems a long way away from the summer, but I write down everyones name and do not forget that you attended this. Thanksgiving weekend, people are very generous with their money! Sign up sheets are at the squadron. Its fun, easy, and youre earning money for yourself. If you dont need money for the activity, itll be nice to help another person in the squadron. Questions? M ODEL R OCKETRY C ONTINUING

By 1st Lt James Kalemis We are done with Phase I of the Model Rocketry program. We have built the Fizzy Rocket, the Goddard rubber band rocket, and taken a test. All, a lot of fun (yes, even the test). The second phase will involve another test, the pop bottle rocket, and building our first, simple model rocket. Early next year we will build a multi-stage rocket, a payload rocket, and some other surprise rockets I have in store. Were looking at a combined launch date with several other squadrons in early spring.
