Kuala Sepetang Visitor Centre

Introduction: Project 2 introduced and explored the formal and poetic articulation of architecture with interesting site context. In project 3, you are to design A VISITOR CENTRE which plays a role as a gateway to Kuala Sepetang and its surrounding sites. Kuala Sepetang Visitor Centre is an information and education centre where visitors can find answers to their questions about the area, along with information about history, fishery products, local foods, and nearby recreational options. Objectives: The objectives set out are to: Introduce analytical approach to context with full site investigation at micro levels in the approach to architecture. Nurture the formal design process for a small public building with precedent study, thorough site analysis and a particular design brief. Emphasize integration of other disciplines such as construction & technology, materials and environmental control. Cultivate good communication, management and leadership skills Learning Outcomes: CLO 1: Demonstrate the ability to conduct and apply analytical approach of context in design that includes precedent study and thorough site analysis. CLO 2: Identify, analyse and interpret data to develop architecture for a small public building with a particular building function. CLO 3: Acquire and demonstrate analytical & communication skills to consolidate programmatic consideration on issues of construction & technology, materials and environmental control to produce an integrated design for a small public building. CLO 4: Work collaboratively as part of a team in terms of sharing information and knowledge. CLO 5: Manage a range of tasks and to produce work to deadlines. CLO 6: Acquire an imaginative and creative vision and use necessary techniques and tools (sketch, drafting, model) to implement design and is to express ideas effectively in visual and oral form.

Space Requirements: 2 Total built area: 350m Functions: 1. Display Area: To provide tourist information regarding the history of Kuala Sepetang; the interesting places to visit. The display area should equipped with below fascilities: a. Display walls for posters A0 size x 20 pieces b. Two site models showing K.Sepetang in 1880s and the present condition. c. Multimedia corner with 50 LED TV 2. Information Counter: 2 fulltime staffs + 2 volunteer local guides 3. 2 parking lot for 11 seater/bus + 2 parking lot for visitors 4. Small restaurant + caf - 50 seats 5. A small archive and study area, 6. A bookshop and sales area, 7. Toilets and storage. The Visitor Center MUST Relate clearly with the site context and allow visitors to experience the site first hand, through views out and direct links onto the site; Be architecturally significant and of nationally recognised quality; Be exciting; Be outward looking and inclusive; Be a landmark structure; Provide all visitors with a lasting memory of their visit; Encourage visitors to tour the wider site, including the Kuala Sepetang Town Area, Seberang Kuala Sepetang, Old Settlement, Old warehouse, Old Railway Station, Malay Kampung, Charcoal Factory, Mangrove Forest Reserve, as well as the other nearby sites; Be environmentally and financially sustainable; Include flexible facilities capable of providing a resource for the history of the town and use of those interested in the event Solutions relying heavily on landscape are encouraged. Visitors should be inspired and informed in ways that somehow express the spirit of the place (genius loci)
