Top 10 latest inventions of March 2011

1. . The latter would be used to assist battle planners. 2. 3. Huge Touchscreen Microscope A group of scientists composed of members of the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) and representatives of a Finnish company called Multitouch Ltd developed a large touch and gesture controlled microscope. The invention makes use of a mix of web-based microscopy and a 46-inch multitouch display. Thus the microscope represents a useful instrument for teaching and learning. Using pinch gestures or handed stretch, the device allows users to zoom images in and out down to 1000x magnification. The biological samples are placed into a microscopy scanner that digitizes them and afterwards stores on an image server. At high magnification the scanned sample represents a combination of up to 50000 separate digital images arranged into a mosaic. The technology is able to recognize the hands of several users simultaneously. Dr. Johan Lundin, researchers at the University of Helsinki says that the technology can be used at scientific meetings, allowing a group of users to observe and study a microscopy sample, "for example when a consensus needs to be reached concerning a new disease entity or a rare case." 4. Solarball - Device that Cleans Polluted Water Mr. Jonathan Liow, a Monash University graduate, came up with an idea to create a simple, yet sustainable water-purification device that is also costfriendly. The device can be used to get rid of diseases and save lives and is called Solarball. The Solarball can produce up to 3 liters of clean water on a daily basis. It is weather-resistant so it can be used by people living in hot, wet, tropical climates. The device attracts sunlight and causes the evaporation of dirty water inside it. During the evaporation, contaminants are parted from the water, leading to the production of drinkable condensation. The invention could help the 900 million people who do not have access to safe drinking water. It is worth mentioning that each year more than 2 million children die from infections caused mainly by contaminated water. 5. Lens that Takes Images From 9 Angles At Once

A group of scientists from the Ohio State University managed to develop a lens that can take pictures of a particular object from 9 different angles at the same time and then combine the images to make a 3D one. Their latest invention is claimed to be world's first single, stationery lens able to generate 3D images by itself. It would be interesting to note that the lens is about the size of a fingernail and so far it is in the development stage. The device resembles a gemstone with 8 facets. With the help of their latest invention researchers were able to shoot 3D images of the tip of a ballpoint pen that has a diameter of about a millimeter. The device could be used in medical industry, for example, to reduce the size of devices to study fluids. 6. High-Def Display Controlled with the Help of Physical Gestures Evoluce, a German company that focuses on the development of natural displays, has recently presented its new 3D sensor high-def display called IVoluce. The main feature of the display is that it can be controlled by physical gestures. With a resolution of 46-inch, the liquid crystal HD display can be used for playing video games, making educational and corporate presentations. The I-Voluce can be controlled from a distance of up to 4 meters. In addition, the device makes use of multitouch technology that allows the display to detect finger input from 6 users simultaneously. The most important component behind the intelligent gesture control of the device is the gesture software WIN&I 1.0, which is compatible with Windows 7 and a myriad of other applications that one can run on the 3D-sensing multitouch screen. 7. Camera that Takes Color Pictures in the Dark Researchers from the Nanosystem Research Division of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) were able to come up with a new technology that makes use of infrared radiation in order to help the user take color pictures in the dark. It would be worth noting, however, that the shot images do not have the exact shades. In the future researchers look forward to improving the camera, so it would make images with more colors and even shoot video that would look as though it was shot during the day. Researchers say that the camera can be used in different ways, including wildlife tracking and in the development of next-gen security cameras. Currently the team works on making the camera more compact and durable. In addition, researchers are developing a new lens that would allow capturing pictures from

a distance. It was said that a commercial version of the device is expected to hit the stores by the end of 2011. 8. System That Can Spot Authors of Anonymous Emails The new technique developed by researchers at Concordia University can accurately identify those who send anonymous emails. What is even more impressive is that the invention is permissible in the court of law. It is worth mentioning that often the police is able to identify an IP address to find out where an email has come from, however, in most cases they find several people at that address. Together with his team, Benjamin Fung, a professor of information systems engineering, made use of methods that are used in speech recognition and data mining in order to identify recurrent patterns, i.e. distinctive combinations of features that repeat in a suspect's emails. The technique showed an accuracy of 80 to 90 percent in identifying the authorship. New-Gen Lie Detector for Airports In the near future airports will have a new deception detection system that will figure out the suspicious people that try to get on planes. A new lie detector is a project launched by scientists from the University of Arizona. Their machine was named Automated Virtual Agent for Truth Assessments in Real-time (Avatar) and it's the size of an ATM. The invention's job is to spot the things that border agents cannot. The device is equipped with a high definition camera with built-in infrared sensors and a microphone. It will be able to capture and estimate the facial expressions and voice of the subject. Avatar will scan the facial features of a person, with a particular focus on the eyes. By using infrared sensors the machine identifies eye dilation and movement, which are the two main signs of deception. The microphone is used to register not only what one says but how they say. Camera that Sees Hidden Things Dr. Reza Zoughi, a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology together with his colleagues managed to develop a patented camera that works similar to body scanners used at airports. The invention uses microwave and millimeter signals to scan a certain material or structure with picture reproduction at the rate of 30 images per second.

All the signals sent by the camera are received by a laptop that then plays the pictures in real time. The camera features a battery similar to those used in laptops. The battery allows the device to work for hours. The invention can be used for different purposes, including inspection of aircrafts, thermal insulating materials inside the spacecrafts and also in the medical field where specialists can use it to scan for cancers for example. In addition, the device can be used in detecting illegal movements of products in airports and other places
