Chapter 1. Introduction

1.

Introduction

This manual will assist you in using TEMS Pocket Positioning Tool.

1.1.

TEMS Pocket Positioning Tool in Brief

With TEMS Pocket 7.x you can perform indoor logfile recording, by using an indoor map (for example a floor plan) and pinpointing your way through the building. The logfile with the measurement samples is stored together with the map in a zip container. When the *.zip file has been transferred to a computer, it can be opened from within TEMS Pocket Positioning Tool. TEMS Pocket Positioning Tool is used to position (i.e. allocate a latitude and longitude value) the unpositioned map and update the geo positions for each sample in the corresponding logfile. The positioned map can then be opened in TEMS Presentation or in TEMS Investigation, superimposed on an ordinary background map. The logfiles (positioned) measurement samples can be plotted on the indoor map and analyzed in the same manner as if they were samples from an ordinary logfile.

Prerequisites

To be able to use TEMS Pocket Positioning Tool, it needs to be installed on your computer. That installation is performed automatically if you have TEMS Investigation 10.0 (or later) or TEMS Presentation 1.2 (or later) installed. If not, TEMS Pocket Positioning Tool needs to be copied from the memory stick for the TEMS Pocket phone and over to your computer, and installed. See also section 2.1. Initial Tasks.

1.3.

Supported Operating Systems

TEMS Pocket Positioning Tool can be used with operating systems Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, and Microsoft Windows Vista SP1.

Getting Started

This chapter guides you through a couple of actions to be taken prior to using TEMS Pocket Positioning Tool.

2.1.

Initial Tasks

If you do not have TEMS Presentation 1.2 (or later) or TEMS Investigation 10.0 (or later) installed, you need to: Install the tool on your computer according to the following procedure: Copy the file TEMS_Pocket_Positioning_Tool.msi found on the memory stick for your TEMS Pocket phone, and save it locally on your computer or on a network directory. Double-click the file TEMS_Pocket_Positioning_Tool.msi.

The installation starts and you will be notified after completion. This procedure is needed only once. To be able to use the tool for positioning maps and corresponding measurement data, you need to: Transfer logfiles with indoor measurements and their corresponding maps (as zip archives) from your TEMS Pocket phone and save them locally on your computer or on a network directory.

2.2.

Starting TEMS Pocket Positioning Tool

Regardless of the installation, TEMS Pocket Positioning Tool is found under Windows Start menu, where you select Programs Ascom TEMS Products Utilities TEMS Pocket Positioning Tool.

Browse for the zip file of interest. Mark it and press Open (or double-click it).

Now it is time to specify where the map and logfile shall be stored when the positioning procedure is complete. Perform the tasks mentioned in the following steps: Press the Properties button on the toolbar.

Chapter 3. Using TEMS Pocket Positioning Tool

Check the box Unzip archive, if you want to unzip the container with the logfile and the map. If so, the map image, a corresponding tab file and the logfile will be stored in an ordinary folder with the same name as the original zip container. If you uncheck this box, you have to unzip your map and logfile manually before you can use them in TEMS Presentation or TEMS Investigation.

The zip container is still stored in the same directory as when you opened it for positioning, and it will also be updated with the new map position and geo positions for the measurement samples after the positioning is complete. Specify the folder where the map image, the corresponding tab file and the logfile shall be stored (if you checked the box Unzip archive in the previous step) after the positioning procedure. Use the Browse button for convenience. Click OK.

On the right side of the map, you now enter Latitude, Longitude, the Width of the map picture, and Direction. Latitude and Longitude values can be obtained from the outdoor map where the indoor map shall be positioned (in TEMS Investigation or TEMS Presentation). The entered values indicate the top left corner of the indoor map picture. The Width is the estimated width (in unit [m]) of the entire picture, not necessarily the building or floor itself, from left to right. If the width is not OK in the map after the positioning, you simply enter a new Width value and start the positioning procedure again Direction is the deviation from the outdoor map, from 0 to 360 degrees clockwise, and is used to adjust the direction of the indoor map before it is positioned in the outdoor map. If the direction is not OK in the map after the positioning, you simply enter a new Direction value and start the positioning procedure again.

When you have entered the values, you start the positioning process by pressing the Start button. During the positioning, a progress bar indicates the progress. After the positioning, Completed is displayed next to the progress bar.

Now you can open the positioned map (from the folder specified previously under Properties) in TEMS Investigation or TEMS Presentation, favorably superimposed on an ordinary outdoor map.
