CLASSIFICA TION Autonomic Nervous system Agent; Alpha and Beta Adrenergic Agonist (SYMPATHO MIMETIC)
ACTION
INDICATION CAUTION/CO TRAINDICAT ION Drug acts Correction of Special directly and by hemodynamic Precaution: the release of imbalances Shock norepinephrine present in secondary to from shock MI, history of sympathetic syndrome peripheral nerve after MI, vascular terminals: trauma, disease. Correct dopaminergic endotoxic hypovolaemia receptors septicemia, before infusion. mediate open heart History of dilation of surgery, and occlusive vessels in the renal failure vascular disease renal and or chronic e.g, splanchnic cardiac atherosclerosis, beds, which decompensati Raynaud's maintain renal on disease, perfusion and Buerger's function: alpha disease, diabetic receptors, endarteritis; which are disproportionate activated by increase in higher doses of diastolic dopamine pressure. mediate, Pregnancy. vasoconstrictio
n, which can override the vasodilating effects beta 1 receptors mediate a positive inotropic effects on the heart
SIDE EFFECT Fast heartbeat Headache Nausea Vomiting Rash Tightness of the chest Swelling of the mouth, face, lips and tongue dizziness
ADVERSE EFFECT
NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES Monitor blood pressure, pulse, peripheral pulses, and urinary output at intervals prescribed by physician. Precise measurements are essential for accurate titration of dosage. Report the following indicators promptly to physician for use in decreasing or temporarily suspending dose: Reduced urine flow rate in absence of hypotension; ascending tachycardia; dysrhythmias; disproportionate rise in diastolic pressure (marked decrease in pulse pressure); signs of peripheral ischemia (pallor, cyanosis, mottling, coldness, complaints of tenderness, pain, numbness, or burning sensation). Monitor therapeutic effectiveness. In

addition to improvement in vital signs and urine flow, other indices of adequate dosage and perfusion of vital organs include loss of pallor, increase in toe temperature, adequacy of nail bed capillary filling, and reversal of confusion or comatose state.
ACTION
INDICATION
1amp STAT
Antipyretic: Reduces fever by acting directly on the hypothalami c heatregulating center to cause vasodilation and sweating, which helps dissipate heat. Analgesic: Site and mechanism of action unclear.
CAUTION/CO SIDE EFFECT TRAINDICAT ION Temporary Contraindicated - Hypoglycae reduction of with allergy to mia fever, temporary acetaminophen - Rash relief of minor - urticaria aches and pains Use cautiously caused by with impaired common cold hepatic and influenza, function, headache, chronic sorethroat, alcoholism, toothache, pregnancy, backache, lactation menstrual cramps, minor arthritis pain and muscle aches
ADVERSE EFFECT
CNS: Headache CV: Chest pain, dyspnea, myocardial damage GI: Hepatic toxicity and failure, jaundice GU: Acute and failure, renal tubular necrosis HYPERSENSITIVITY: rash, fever
NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES
do not exceed recommended doses reduce dosage with hepatic impairment discontinue drug if hypersensitivity occurs Give drug with food if GI upset occurs Do not take for longer than 10days unless directed by the prescriber
