Dandelion Dinner Set for March 31
On Saturday, March 31, the Greater Vineland Chamber of
Commerce will host the 39th annual Dandelion Dinner and
Beer Tasting from 6 to 11 p.m. at Merighis Savoy Inn in
Vineland.
This community event began in 1973 as a way to celebrate
Vinelands agricultural heritage and has contributed to interna-
tional recognition of the city as the Dandelion Capital of the
World. The event has seen an influx of ticket sales and grow-
ing popularity in recent years, topping more than 400 tickets
sold in each of the last five years.
Stacey Lilliston, who is the event chair, attributes the
increased popularity to a number of components.
I think there are a lot of things that go into the popularity
of the event, she said. Adding the beer tasting (which we did
three years ago), people seem to really enjoy that and come out
for it. The event is like a dance party, and everyone seems to
have a great time. And the food is just fantastic. Most of the
dishes are a rich, delicious food with dandelion ingredients. I
believe all of those things together have made the event huge
for the community.
The beer tasting has played no small part in helping to con-
sistently push attendance over the 400-ticket threshold. Select
vendors provide a variety of beer for tasting and information
The 2012 slate of Hometown Heroes have their night in the limelight.

on each brew, and attendees receive a com-
memorative pilsner glass, which is used for
tasting.
Merighis Savoy Inn has been the host
for a number of years now, and the restau-
rant has become synonymous with the din-
ner. Tom Merighi, owner of the Savoy, is
happy it has turned out that way.
I really fell in love with the dinner
when I first attended it about 20 years ago,
he said. I was so glad when they moved it
[to the Savoy Inn], and it has become a pet
project for me. Its something I have
enjoyed taking on each spring the last 15 or
so years.
Seemingly, part of the challenge with
hosting a dinner that features dandelions in
nearly every dish would be culinary prepa-
ration. But Merighi insists that working
with dandelions is actually quite simple.
The cooking of the dandelions is pretty
easy actually, he said. The real challenge
is cleaning the dandelions. If theres rain
the day before, those things just become
loaded with sand. So were always praying
for dry weather and wet water to clean the
dandelions. Cooking dandelions is not rock-
et science, though. You can use them the
same way as any green that youd saut.
Theyre very versatile and very flavorful.
For the fifth year,
Capital Bank will be
sponsoring the event.
Were a communi-
ty bank, and we feel
this event is truly a
community event,
said Cosmo
Giovinazzi, vice presi-
dent and Cumberland
County market man-
ager of Capital Bank.
We think this event
really epitomizes the
idea of community
and what it is all
about. We get approached to do a lot of
sponsorships, a lot of them great causes,
but we cant do all of them. We pick causes
and events that we feel are beneficial to the
area, and this particular event is right at the
top of the list.
For the first time ever this year, the
entertainment will be provided by an act
that was asked to return by popular
demandThe BLT Band.
The band did a phenomenal job last
year, said Lilliston. They had people
dancing until the very end of the night, and
the dance floor was full. They were very
well received, and those in attendance just
raved about them. So we knew we had to
get them back.
The return of The BLT Band, along with
the already high demand for tickets, has the
Dandelion Committee certain that this
years event will sell out once again.
They are encouraging everyone to buy
their tickets now, as 315 of the 400 or so
tickets to the event have already been sold,
as of press time.
Tickets are $45 per person and must be
purchased in advance. Call the GVCC at
856-691-7400, or visit them online at
www.vinelandchamber.org to purchase
tickets. I

STRAIGHTENING TEETH HAS COME A LONG WAY. Braces work. Yet,
even though they come in bright colors these days, the brackets and steel wires still
work the same way. Food still gets stuck in them. Flossing and brushing are an
adventure. And, when youre a teenager sporting a mouthful of metal, easy and
condent smiles can be hard to come by.
ALL SMILES. NO SACRIFICES. Back when we were teenagers, putting up with the
hassles of braces and feeling self-conscious about wearing them were necessary in order to get
the smile you wanted. For todays teens, getting through those formative years can be a little
tougher. Thankfully, straightening their teeth with Invisalign Teen
TM
is a lot easier.
THE ADVANTAGES ARE CLEAR. Invisalign Teen is a series of virtually invisible
aligners that gradually straighten your teens teeth. And because theyre removable, proper
dental hygiene is a cinch. Since most people wont even know your teen is wearing Invisalign,
theyll have the condence to keep on smiling. Best of all, treatment costs about as much
as braces, and fewer doctor visits take up less of your time. Our aligners
even include a color-coded indicator that tells you how long your teens
been wearing them.
FIND OUT WHY MORE AND MORE MOMS ARE CHOOSING INVISALIGN TEEN.
Choosing how to straighten your teens teeth is a big decision. Visit our
website to see what other teenagers and their parents have to say about
us. Then take a few moments to take our Self Assessment together with
your teenager.
Invisalign Teen will help give your teenager the condence of a great
smileand theyll love you for it along the way.
IS IT TIME TO RETHINK BRACES
FOR YOUR TEEN?

DiPilla Graduates from
U.S. Air Force
During the week of March 1,
Christopher DiPilla, a 2010 Millville
Senior High School graduate, gradu-
ated from the U.S. Air Force Basic
Military Training at Lackland Air
Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Alongside his fiance Alisha
Donelson, of Millville, and mother,
Valerie Sauers of Buzzards Bay,
Massachusetts, the newly inducted
Airman DiPilla received the
Thunderbolt physical training
excellence award for his success in
his physical ability through an evalu-
ation of sit-ups, push-ups and a mile
and a half running time. Airman
DiPilla will be studying Integrated
Avionics Systems during his career
in the Air Force.
Through his journey of eight and half weeks through the rigorous and labori-
ous basic training, Airman DiPilla, along with his Flight squadron, achieved
Warrior Flight status, where they received a Flight trophy and earned extra privi-
leges during their long-anticipated graduation.
Airman DiPilla is known in Millville for being an avid soccer player since he
was five years old up until high school. Through Millville Senior High School,
DiPilla was an active participant in the American Technological Honor Society,
the German Club, Student Council and Millville Soccer. Before his leave for Basic
Training at Lackland, Airman DiPilla was a fundraising volunteer and Trustee for
the Cumberland County Martial Arts Training Center Support Group, which aids
in funding youth martial artists to achieve their dreams of attending the AAU
Taekwondo Nationals. Through 2011 Airman DiPilla attended DeVry University in
New Brunswick, NJ for Computer Engineering. From a young age, the now 20-
year-old Airman was destined to become a part of the U.S. Air Force. Airman
DiPilla was involved in Civil Air Patrol and always displayed a knack for the
Military. He has always had a philanthropic nature, aiding all those who are in
need, but now as a United States Airman, he is sure to make an impact in our
Nations air defense. We congratulate you Christopher DiPilla on a job well done
and we thank you for your service.

His cheery ways and pleasant face
Are a pleasure to recall,
He had a kindly word for each

To clasp his hand in the better land,
Never to part again.

CompleteCare Hires Chief Medical Officer
After an extensive search, the CompleteCare Health
Network has hired Dr. Cheryl Bettigole, MD, MPH, as Chief
Medical Officer. Dr. Bettigole received her doctorate in medi-
cine from Thomas Jefferson University and has a Master of
Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins. In addition to over
12 years of experience as a Family Practice physician, Dr.
Bettigole also brings
with her a passion
for ensuring that
quality, compassion-
ate healthcare is
accessible for all
who need it.
Dr. Bettigole
recently served as
Clinical Director and
Consultant for the
Philadelphia
Department of
Public Health where
she designed and
implemented a pilot
chronic disease management project and oversaw an inter-
preter program that doubled the access for non-English
speaking patients. While her career has been focused in
Philadelphia, Dr. Bettigole is no stranger to southern Jersey or
Complete Cares work. In 1992, she worked for CompleteCare
when it was known as Bridgeton Area Health Services. During
that time, her efforts in Cumberland County focused on work-
ing in migrant camps to ensure that the farmworkers and
their families were receiving proper medical care.
In addition to her executive role, Dr. Bettigole will see patients
at CompleteCare Medical & Dental Professionals in Millville.

Order Your Strawberry Plants
Heres your chance to order Earliglow
strawberry plants from the Cumberland
County 4-H Advisory Committee at a great
price, only $7.50 for a bundle of 25 plants.
Earliglow is a popular early-season
variety that grows well in nearly all soil
types and will produce medium to large,
full-flavored fruit for eating fresh or for
freezing. This variety is a proven winner for
its flavor and is disease resistant.
Backyard gardening with strawberries
need not be limited to just the backyard.
Many homeowners are setting out plants as
part of their landscaping around their
homes. Others grow plants in pots and tubs
where extra care produces flavorful berries.
Once a strawberry bed has been estab-
lished, with just a reasonable amount of
care, it will produce quality fruit for several
years, according to Jeannette Rea-
Keywood, County 4-H Agent.
The plants will be available for local pick
up around the third week of April at the 4-H
Center in Deerfield Township. Orders will
be taken until the supply runs out. Anyone
interested in purchasing plants at a cost of
only $7.50 should call the 4-H Center at 856-
451-2800, ext. #3 to request an order form.
USDA Announces CRP
General Sign-up
The Farm Service Agency (FSA) County
Executive Director, Angela J Andreoli,
recently announced that the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA) will
conduct a four-week Conservation Reserve
Program (CRP) general signup. This CRP
signup began on March 12, and ends on
April 6, 2012. CRP has a 25-year legacy of
successfully protecting the nation's natural
resources, while providing significant eco-
nomic and environmental benefits to rural
communities across the United States.
CRP is a voluntary program available to
agricultural producers to help them use
environmentally sensitive land for conser-
vation benefits. Producers enrolled in CRP
plant long-term, resource-conserving cov-
ers to improve the quality of water, control
soil erosion and develop wildlife habitat.

In return, USDA provides participants
with rental payments and cost-share assis-
tance. Contract duration is between 10 and
15 years. Producers with expiring con-
tracts and producers with environmentally
sensitive land are encouraged to evaluate
their options under CRP. Producers also
are encouraged to look into CRPs other
enrollment opportunities offered on a con-
tinuous, non-competitive, signup basis.
Offers for CRP contracts are ranked
according to the Environmental Benefits
Index (EBI). USDAs Farm Service Agency
(FSA) collects data for each of the EBI
factors based on the relative environmen-
tal benefits for the land offered. Each eli-
gible offer is ranked in comparison to all
other offers and selections made from that
ranking. FSA uses the following EBI fac-
tors to assess the environmental benefits
for the land offered:
Wildlife habitat benefits resulting
from covers on contract acreage;
Water quality benefits from reduced
erosion, runoff and leaching;
On-farmbenefits fromreduced erosion;
Benefits that will likely endure
beyond the contract period;
Air quality benefits from reduced
wind erosion; and
Cost.
For more information on CRP and
other FSA programs, visit a local FSA
service center or go online at

Abbey Road Performed in Its
Entirety at Landis on Saturday
The Historic Landis Theater invites you
to take a Magical Mystery Tour on The
YellowSubmarine when American English,
The Complete Beatles Tribute, makes
their much anticipated return to Vineland
on Saturday, March 17 at 8 p.m. This special
appearance at the Landis Theater will fea-
ture a complete performance of the entire
classic Abbey Road album, which was select-
ed by The Grapevine reader David Josephs.
American English performs songs cov-
ering the entire career of the Beatles from
1963 through 1970, with precise attention
given to every musical detail using no pre-
recorded tracks. Combine this dedication
to musical integrity with costume changes,
vintage instruments, and special effects,
and you will agree that American English
captures the very essence of John, Paul,
George, and Ringo. Their demand across
the United States and abroad, coupled
with their spectacular fan base, has
launched them into larger venues and
theaters worldwide.
I wouldnt have seen the world if it
wasnt for The Beatles, said American
English group leader Eric Michaels, who
performs as Paul. I love the Beatles any-
way, but this whole adventure has been
really special to me. Meeting and working
with Mr. Leach and playing in the actual
venues The Beatles started in was really
amazing and trippy.
Under the wing of original Beatles pro-
moter Sam Leach, American English was
granted an honor never bestowed upon any
other group. They traced the historic foot-
steps of The Beatles, and performed on the
hallowed ground of several original Beatles

and food processing businesses.
EDA awarded the federal grant in sup-
port of demolishing a former food process-
ing facility on the 30-acre site and con-
structing essential infrastructure to prepare
the site for a new business/industrial park
targeted at southern Jerseys existing agri-
cultural and food processing industry. At a
total project cost of $2,910,000, the EDA
estimates that 205 jobs will be created and
$46 million in private investment will be
leveraged by the Food Business Park.
I want to thank Congressman LoBiondo
for his support on our grant application and
acknowledge the great work of the local
Economic Development Council, in particu-
lar Lou Moffa and the professional staff,
said Franklin Township Mayor Joe Petsch.
This project will be a major economic driv-
er for our community and it will lead to
substantial job gains and economic growth
for the county and region.
In August 2011, LoBiondo sent a letter of
support to the U.S. Assistant Secretary of
Commerce for Economic Development in
support of Franklin Townships application.

grant process can be found at www.eda.gov.

venues including The Cavern Club in
Liverpool and The Grosvenor Ballroom in
Wallasey. In addition to headlining
International Beatle Week in Liverpool in
front of 50,000 screaming fans, American
English headlined the George Harrison
tribute at the House of Blues where they
were joined by several legendary Beatles/
Wings related artists including original
Beatles drummer Pete Best and Wings co-
founder Denny Laine.
In addition to Michaels, American
English features Frank Canino as John
Lennon, Tom Gable as Ringo Starr, Danny
Leavitt as George Harrison, and Ken
Zemanek who fills the role of famed
Beatles producer Sir George Martin. Our
secret weapon is Ken, who also plays key-
boards during the show. Without his wiz-
ardry we wouldnt have the authentic
Beatles sound. He performs all the orches-
trations and special effects the Beatles were
known for live, using no tape or record-
ings, Michaels said.
We are thrilled to be coming back to the
Landis Theater, its a great venue. Everyone
in the band wants to thank The Grapevine
newspaper so much for sponsoring the
albumcontest and everyone who took the
time to enter. Congratulations to the win-
ners David Josephs, Beny Velez, and Alicia
Green. We are really excited to be perform-
ing Abbey Road in its entirety, as well as
some other surprises we have planned for
the show. We look forward to seeing you all
on March 17, Michael concluded.

Downtown Vineland
{ TODD NOON, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, VDID / MAINSTREET VINELAND }

Volunteer
Week
National Volunteer Week is the third week in April.
E
ach year, the third week of April
marks National Volunteer Week.
As a volunteer-driven organization,
Main Street Vineland looks for-
ward to this time of year, because it gives us
an opportunity to recruit new volunteers,
and honor those who have given so generous-
ly of their time over the past year. Also, we
are fortunate in that our efforts to recruit,
retain and recognize volunteers are spon-
sored in their entirety by the generosity of
Capital Bank of New Jersey, who has been
our partner in volunteerism since 2010.
Over the past few months, our
Organization Committee has been working
to plan our annual Volunteer Information
and Networking Event (VINE, to be held
April 18: more details on that in a later col-
umn) and our annual Volunteer Recognition
brunch, to be held April 21.
One of the cornerstones of this recognition
event is presenting the Presidential Volunteer
Service Awards, created by President George
W. Bush in 2002. Last year, we had five peo-
ple who earned this prestigious award and it
looks like well add to that number this year.
For the award, an individual, family, or
group can receive Presidential recognition
for volunteer hours earned and reported to
Main Street Vineland over a 12-month peri-
od. The levels are Bronze, Silver, and Gold,
with the criteria as follows:
Bronze: Kids (age 5-14): 50-74 hours;
Young Adults (age 15-25): 100-174 hours;
Adults: (age 26+); 100-249 hours; Family &
Groups: 200-499 hours.
Silver: Kids: 75-99 hours; Young Adults:
175-249 hours; Adults: 250-499 hours; Family
& Groups: 500-999 hours.
Gold: Kids: 100+ hours or more; Young
Adults: 250+ hours; Adults: 500+hours;
Family & Groups: 1,000+ hours.
If the figures seem overwhelming, think
how fast volunteer hours can accumulate
over a years time and you can see that these
goals are attainable. Each winner receives an
official Presidents Volunteer Service Award
lapel pin, a personalized certificate of
achievement, and a congratulatory letter
from President Obama.
For students and young people entering
the job market or applying to college, this
award is an impressive achievement that can
be added to a resume. For everyone, it is
national recognition that your volunteer
service is both valued and appreciated.
The biggest incentive to volunteer your
services for Main Street Vineland, however, is
knowing that you are making an important
differencewhether your task is big or small
in helping to revitalize downtown Vineland.
We need your help. We can find a place
for you and provide you an opportunity each
month to report your volunteer hours. Call us
at 856-794-8653 or stop in for details. We
would love to present you with the Presidents
Volunteer Service Award next year. I

ties being offered through the Broadband
Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP)
grant received by the New Jersey State
Library. NJWorks.org has now become a
clearinghouse for a number of job-related
resources, support groups, and training
available at libraries and other community
centers across the state. NJWorks.org con-
tinues to grow and will continue to offer a
wealth of information to aid in the job-
seeking efforts of New Jerseys unem-
ployed and underemployed.
The NewJersey State Library, an affili-
ate of Thomas Edison State College, has
received a federal American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act Broadband Technology
Opportunity Program(BTOP) award in the
Public Computer Center category.
The award consists of $5.1 million grant
from the National Telecommunications and
Information Administration and matching
funds of $1.5 million fromthe Bill &Melinda
Gates Foundation. The Bill &Melinda Gates
Foundation gave an additional $150,000 to
the NewJersey State Library to support E-
rate technical assistance, which will help
sustain the project's services.
The goal of the programis to help in the
economic recovery of the state by giving
libraries the tools they need to expand serv-
ices to the unemployed and underemployed
by enhancing training opportunities, broad-
band capability and workstation availability
in NewJersey libraries. It is estimated that
more than five million NewJersey residents
will be served through this initiative over
the three years of the grant project.

Rossi Students Raise $1,100 for St. Jude Hospital
Students at Rossi Middle School have raised more than $1,100 for the St.
Jude Childrens Research Hospital through a recent Math-a-Thon, according to
Tammy Monahan, principal. The fundraiser was organized by Trista Camp, a
math teacher at the school. The students who raised the most money included:
Madelynne Oechsle, $140; Antony Jordan, $125; Kaitlin Flanegan, $100; Kyle
Cicillini, $78; and Christin McKeon, $75.
For the past couple of months, Rossi students have participating in the Math-
a-Thon, a fundraising program for grades K-8 that benefits St. Jude, according to
Camp. By participating in the Math-a-Thon, Rossi students have made it possible

OLMA Celebrates Catholic Schools Week
Our Lady of Mercy Academy in Newfield recently celebrated Catholic Schools
Week with dress-down days such as Color Day, Twin Day, Sports Day,
International Day, and Crazy Day. Students and faculty enjoyed a specially pre-
pared lunch on their respective student and faculty appreciation days. The girls
were all ears when special guest speaker Miss New Jersey, Katharyn Nicolle,
talked to them about the importance of reading. She even laughed with the girls
about their erratic attire, since it was Crazy Day.
From left: Seniors Rae Donofrio from Mullica Hill, Alanna Zappariello from Buena, Elena
Grady from Sewell, Becky Schneider from Franklinville, Ariana Kaufmann from Marmora,
Marissa Rainear from Vineland, Geena Simila from Wenonah, and Bekah Catalana from
Millville pose as though they are going on safari on Crazy Day.

Raising Awareness for Congenital
Heart Disease
Local teen (Quinton Township NJ)
Victoria Hegeman, a 14-year old high
school student joins the millions of
Americans who wish to raise awareness for
children and adults who are born with
Congenital Heart Disease.
On July 16, 1997, Victoria Hegeman was
born with several heart defects that were
detected just hours after her birth. The
Hegeman family quickly became familiar
with medical terms they never heard ofa
coarctation of the aorta (narrowing), two
ventricular septal defects (holes between
the chambers of the heart) and a mal-
formed aortic valve. Doctors hoped that
Tori would be able to grow stronger at
home before intervention was necessary
but after only three days, Tori had to be
rushed to the Childrens Hospital of
Philadelphia. Her tiny heart was failing.
For the next few weeks, 5-pound Tori and
her family prepared for the first of three
open heart surgeries. The first was done
when she was only 17 days old, the second
at 23 months, and the most recent at 10
years of age. It was clear right from the
start that Tori was a born fighter. After
every surgery, she went home within 10
days. Today, Tori is in her freshman in high
school and wants to help other kids who
are faced with cardiac issues.
The Hegeman family is one of the lucky
ones. Because of the severity of some heart
defects, complications from surgery, and
undiagnosed cardiac abnormalities, many
parents never get the chance to see their
children grow up.
Of the 40,000 U.S children born each
year with Congenital Heart Disease, 4,000
of them will not live to see their first birth-
day. Despite the fact that two times as
many children die from Congenital Heart
Disease than from all forms of childhood
cancer combined, funding for pediatric
cancer research is five times higher than
funding for Congenital Heart Disease.
Congenital Heart Week was created to help
increase funding for these cardiac chal-
lenges while showing support for families
who often live at their childs bedside for
months at a time. Even well-insured fami-
lies struggle to pay the extra cost of trans-
portation, parking, meals, lodging, and
medical costs. Parents are sometimes
forced to walk away from their jobs in
order to be there for their children.
The Hegeman family invites the com-
munity to help make a difference for chil-
dren and families affected by Congenital
Heart Disease. Support a local non-profit
organization to benefit families affected by
Congenital Heart Disease by visiting
www.miracleformateo.org and/or the
Congenital Heart Walk on May 19, 2012 at
Cooper River Park at www.congenital-
heartwalk.org. For more information, email

Treasure
on Landis
Modern pirate movies have built upon
the classic being shown Thursday at The Landis.
B
efore and after Victor Fleming
directed the film classics The
Wizard of Oz and Gone With the
Wind, he engaged in movie pro-
ductions of literary favorites like Rudyard
Kiplings Captains Courageous, John
Steinbecks Tortilla Flat and Robert Louis
Stevensons Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Another
Stevenson adaptation helmed by Fleming
was the pirate tale of Treasure Island, a cine-
ma chestnut that will be screened at the
Landis Theater Thursday evening at 7:30.
Stevensons novel was originally serialized
in 1881-82 in the childrens magazine Young
Folks before being published as a novel in
1883. According to online sources, the book
established many of the cultural stereotypes
associated with the image of pirates and the
pursuit of hidden treasure.
Flemings 1934 cinematic rendering is as
timeless as its source, a perfect mix of
adventure, suspense and comic relief. At the
time of its release, it was noteworthy for
reteaming child actor Jackie Cooper and
Wallace Beery three years after the classic
The Champ and one year after their reunion
in The Bowery. It was Hollywoods fifth ver-
sion of the novel about Jim Hawkins, the
youthful protagonist swept into a treasure
hunt and a tricky relationship with the mur-
derous pirate Long John Silver, who is com-
peting for the treasure.
Cooper and Beery, as Hawkins and
Silver respectively, capture the quirky
friendship between the two characters per-
fectly. While they undermine each others
attempts to acquire the hidden bounty, they
develop a mutual respect and concern for
each other. According to Michael Sragows
biography, Victor Fleming: An American
Movie Master, the onscreen relationship
may have owed a lot to the pairs interac-
tion behind the cameras. Beery, it has been
noted, was not the easiest actor to work
with on the set of a film, being unpre-
dictable, resenting the attention Cooper
might receive in a scene and suffering with
a leg strapped behind him to properly por-
tray his one-legged character. Cooper, for
his part, used Beerys personality to his
advantage, even as a motivation to cry at
the end of the film.
Despite Beerys antics off-screen, he
delivers a solid performance as the conniving
pirate, conning his way aboard the ship
bound for the island that holds the lost
treasure and treating the members of his
gang as the disposable mercenaries they are.
His scenes with Cooper, particularly after
Hawkins discovers Silvers real intent, are the
highlights of the film. He never relinquishes
his con-artist demeanor, but seems to sur-
prise himself over his newfound respect for
the boy, rising to protect and defend him
even as he views him as an adversary.
Sragows book reveals that Cooper cred-
its Fleming as one of his best directors, say-
ing that the director treated him as an adult
and encouraged him throughout the shoot.
Sragow also recounts how Fleming realized
the appeal of the Hawkins role for movie
audiences. During a preview screening, the
director watched as the audience fidgeted
during a lengthy segment involving a con-
frontation between Silver and his gang.
Most of the scene was excised from the
final cut, with only the portion featuring
Hawkins retained.
Fleming and screenwriter John Lee
Mahin wanted to remain as faithful as pos-
sible to Stevensons novel, but MGM studio
head Louis B. Mayer insisted on changing
the ending to incorporate Coopers trade-
mark crying scene and provide a happy end-
ing. The cast and crew were reluctantly
reassembled to shoot the now familiar end-
ing. Cooper admitted to being unhappy
about the re-shoot but, according to the
Turner Classic Movies Website, Beery
openly rebelled, intentionally blowing lines,
remaining in his dressing room and needing
to use the restroom before a take. He suc-
ceeded in turning a one-day shoot of a two-
and-a-half-page scene into nearly a full
week, at the studios expense.
MGM spent $825,000 on the film, and
its initial release garnered only $565,000,
but this was remedied when the film was
soon re-released in the United States and
opened overseas.
There have been a few film versions of
Treasure Island since this one, from Disney to
a television adaptation, each with their own
take on the story and characters and most of
them shot in color. But Thursday night, trav-
el back in time with the glorious black-and-
white of Flemings version and discover or
revisit a rare treasure of the cinema. I

Contestants who are in grades 6 and 7
participated in the Junior Equestrian of
the Year Contest and 4-H members in 8th
through 12th grade competed for the title
of Cumberland County 4-H Equestrian of
the Year. Participation in the Junior
Equestrian Contest gives younger 4-H
members an opportunity to develop and
practice their interviewing and public
speaking skills in preparation for the 4-H
Equestrian of the Year Contest.
A panel of judges comprised of individ-
uals from the horse industry reviewed and
scored each contestant based on their
resume, personal interview and stage
presentation.
The Cumberland County 4-H
Equestrian of the Year will represent the
county at the State 4-H Equestrian of the
Year Contest scheduled for August 24 at
the Horse Park of New Jersey in Stone
Tavern. This event is held in conjunction
with the NJ State 4-H Championship
Horse Show. The purpose of this event is
to promote 4-H and the horse industry in
New Jersey through public speaking and
industry awareness. This event gives can-
didates an opportunity to express them-
selves and demonstrate their abilities
before a public audience.
The 4-H Youth Development Program
is part of Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural
Experiment Station Cooperative

4-H Horse Bowl
Name the parts of the thoracic links.
How many bones are there in a horses
body? What is a cantle? Give the
length of, capacity of, and name the parts
of the small intestine.
These are examples of the equine-
related questions that the Cumberland
County 4-H Horse Bowl teams answered
at the New Jersey 4-H Horse Bowl
Contest on February 25, in Monmouth
County.
The team members who have been
studying horse-related material including
conformation, diseases, feed and nutri-
tion, reproduction, anatomy and physiolo-
gy, horse management, tack and equip-
ment, showing, breed characteristics and
trivia have worked for the past three
months to bone-up on answers to these
and many other tough questions.
Senior Team members included Olivia
Moore of Millville, Austin Smith of
Bridgeton, Hannah and Rachel Ricci of
Millville, Samantha and Jacob Newkirk
from Bridgeton, Marshall Anderson of
Newport, Anna and Nina Calavinni of
Bridgeton, Ireland Styring of Bridgeton,
Nikayla Hetzell of Pittsgrove, Brittany
ODonell of Dividing Creek and Heather
Koering of Vineland.

The 4-H Horse Bowl program is very
educational and is similar to the college
bowls on television. Much of the material
and questions used is directly related to
information studied in biology, physiology
and chemistry classes in school and it
gives students practical applications for
this material. Many body functions, anato-
my, physiology, reproduction and genetics
are basically the same in man as in a
horse, so members become very knowl-
edgeable in these areas and often go on to
study in the medical or veterinarian fields.
The Cumberland County 4-H Program
is part of Rutgers Cooperative Extension a
unit of the New Jersey Agricultural
Experiment Station. 4-H educational pro-
grams are offered to all youth, grades K-13
(one year out of high school) on an age
appropriate basis without regard to race,
religion, color, national origin, ancestry,
sex, sexual orientation, gender identity
and expression, disability, veteran status,
and any other category protected by law.
