20112012 EHS Salary Guide

How to Use This Guide

BLR has been reporting salary data for a select group of benchmark jobs for almost a decade. However, in 2006, we greatly expanded the jobs, as well as the number of industries and metropolitan
areas for which we report data. This approach to collecting and using salary data makes it possible
for us to offer our annual survey for Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) professionals, the
20112012 EHS Salary Guide.
This survey includes 2 years worth of data effective July 1, 2010 and July 1, 2011. Data are reported for
32 positions specific to the EHS field and allow you to analyze changes in salaries from year to year.
Some of the positions included in this guide are nonexempt and some are exempt.
Nonexempt employees are defined as workers who are covered by the minimum wage and overtime
requirements of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Compensation is expressed as an hourly
rate. Nonexempt employees must be paid at least the minimum hourly rate. Currently, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour and employers must also comply with state minimum wage laws.
Exempt employees are defined as workers who are not covered by the overtime requirements of
the FLSA. Compensation is expressed as annual salary. For a position to be classified as exempt under
the FLSA, employees must be paid an annual salary of at least $23,660.
Have a question? We will be happy to answer any questions about the data presented in this report,
but confidentiality prevents us from supplying information about individual respondents.

Tips for Interpreting the Data

1. Review the responsibilities of each position description before making comparisons with the positions in your company; we recommend that you not make comparisons by title alone.
2. Concentrate on the rates reported by percentile for each job and, in particular, the 50th percentile,
as this is the midpoint of the data reported for the position. Data are also reported for the 25th and
75th percentiles to provide you with information on the range of salaries for each position.
3. In some instances, there are insufficient data for all data points or for certain metropolitan areas
and industries. These instances are identified as n/a on the reports.
4. Consider the recruiting area for any given position when deciding what demographic selections
to use. For instance, some high-level or specialized jobs may require statewide recruiting efforts,
while other jobs may be recruited at the local level.

Column Headings
The first column of each page of the report indicates the demographic selection for the data presented in that row. As noted above, the reports contain 2 years worth of data. The next three columns
have data effective 7/1/2009 and the second section has data effective 7/1/2010. The column headings at the top of each table may be interpreted as follows:

Heading

Explanation

25th Percentile

The rate below which 25% of the data fall

50th Percentile

The median rate of all employees reported

75th Percentile

The rate below which 75% of the data fall

The last two columns of data on each page show the dollar and percent change in the salary or
hourly rate reported at the 50th percentile.
Note: In some instances, you may see large variances in the 2010 and 2011 data. This likely reflects
changes both in the industry and in the employers reporting data for those jobs.

Geographic/Demographic Labels
Data for each job are reported at the national level in the aggregate and also by industry. In addition,
data are provided for all 50 states where available.

20112012 EHS SALARY GUIDE:

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The environmental, health, and safety fields are in the midst of change. Job responsibilities are shifting, and you are being asked to do more with less. As an EHS professional, its hard to tell if you are being paid competitively. BLRs 20112012 EHS
Salary Guide will help you evaluate if you are being paid a fair amount for the responsibilities you are shouldering. In addition, EHS managers can find the information to keep their departments competitive and efficientpaying the right amount
to retain hard-to-fill positions but not overpaying on others.

EXEMPT POSITIONS HOLDING GROUND

Data for the 20 benchmarked positions show that the economic troubles of the
past 3 years are beginning to affect exempt EHS employees. Salary increases from
2010 to 2011 for those 20 positions ranged from a high of 16.77% to a low of 0.05%,
with an average of 1.99%. The average is down from the 2009 to 2010 average of
3.13%. One position (Chemist) saw a decrease in salary of almost 1%. In one bright
spot for the industry, Compliance Officers nationwide saw a sharp increase of over
16% (see Table 1 for details). Only 4 of the 20 exempt positions realized a greater
percent increase in median salary in 20102011 over 20092010. Other than the
Chemists, who took a loss, the greatest percentage decrease was for Industrial Psychologists at 4.88%.

STILL NO COLA
Theres good news and bad news again this year. The good news is that 19 of
the 20 exempt positions received increases in 2011 above the cost of living adjustment (COLA)*. The bad news is that COLA for 2011 is 0% (the latest COLA
available). (See Chart 1.)
This is the second year without an automatic COLA since they went into effect
in 1975. Last year was the first year without an automatic COLA. Comparing
2010 to 2011 data, the highest change in median salary for exempt EHS positions was 16.77% for Compliance Officers. Emergency Management Specialists (renamed Emergency Management Directors) came in second at a 4.14%
increase over 2010.
Compliance Officers are involved in investigating conformity with laws and
regulations governing compliance with licenses and permits. Emergency Management Directors are the folks responsible for coordinating disaster response
or crisis management activities, providing disaster preparedness training, and
preparing emergency plans and procedures for natural, wartime, or technological disasters and hostage situations.
*COLAs are periodic changes in wages and benefits designed to bring pay in line with increases in the cost of living.

SALARIES FOR THREE NONEXEMPT EHS POSITIONS

LOST GROUND
Wages for 12 benchmarked nonexempt EHS positions in 2011 ranged from a
high of $30.82 an hour for Power Plant Operators to $14.60 an hour for Pesticide
Handlers (see Table 2).
Nine of the 12 benchmarked nonexempt jobs saw increases over 2010 median
salary. Septic Tank Servicers saw a decrease in median salary of 0.36% in 2011
over 2010. This follows a 2010 decrease of 0.54% over 2009. However, Industrial
Engineering Technicians wages were up by almost 2% after having a losing year
in 2010.
The highest change in median salary for nonexempt EHS positions was 3.35% for
Power Plant Operators. As noted, three of the benchmarked nonexempt EHS positions lost ground (Hazardous Materials Removal Workers, Septic Tank Servicers,
and Pesticide Handlers), but the other nine made more in 2011 than they did in
2010 (see Chart 2). The average increase for those 9 nonexempt EHS positions
that saw an increase from 2010 to 2011 was 1.21%.

SMALLER INCREASES FOR SOME EXEMPT EHS JOBS

Although 19 of the 20 benchmarked EHS exempt positions registered increases in
median salaries from 2010 to 2011, most did not even realize a 2% increase. Salaries
of Environmental Scientists saw the lowest increase in median salary at 0.05% for
2011 over 2010.While Environmental Scientists in South Carolina actually saw a
19.31% increase in median salary in 2011 over 2010, those same jobs in North
Dakota and Massachusetts lost ground by 21.57% and 7.39%, respectively. A total
of 25 states saw a decrease in median salary for Environmental Scientists in 2011.
Table 5 shows the exempt EHS jobs with the smallest increase in median salary
from 2010 to 2011.
