Standard-compliant components for photovoltaic applications

Safeandeconomicalelectricpowergenerationusing photovoltaicsystems
In view of the limited resources of fossil fuels, the use of renewable energy sources is becoming increasingly important. Alongside wind turbines, photovoltaic systems are a key area of interest. Both the ecological and economic aspects of these systems are of great importance. PV systems play an important role in CO2 reduction and also make good business sense, not least in view of the feedin tariffs guaranteed by local laws (e.g. German Renewable Energy Sources Act EEG). The European Photovoltaic Industry Associa tion (EPIA) forecasts growth of up to 32% in the PV sector by 2013 which has been driven by new governmental promotional schemes introduced in many countries. The construction and operation of photovoltaic systems is now integrated in the sys tem of standards under IEC 603647712. Compliance with this standard guarantees the safe construction and operation of the PV system. Siemens offers a highquality, standardcompliant product range for the operation of PV systems, which guarantees a high level of operational safety and a longterm stability of yield.

RapidinstallationandeconomicaloperationofPVsystems.
Comprehensiveportfoliofor maximumoperationalsafety A comprehensive product portfolio, tailored for all sizes of systems and all areas of application is available for the construction of a PV system. This portfolio includes triedandtested, highquality appliances for protection, switching, measurement and monitoring. Enhanced safety, also for direct current parts, with universal currentsensitive RCCB type B (SIQUENCE). The products satisfy the fundamental requirements for the construction and functionality of photovoltaic systems in accordance with standards IEC 603647712 and IEC 602691, 6. Simple planning and operation are further advantages of the PV system components. The standard rail mounting also allows for the rapid construction of the system. End-to-endprotectionuptothe inverter Solar modules and connecting cables must be protected against return feed from intact lines into defective lines, as well as from defective inverters. This protection is provided by using miniature circuit breakers or PV fuses. A DC isolator must also be positioned downstream. This allows for discon nection in accordance with standard IEC 603647712 if a fault occurs, as well as for maintenance work to be carried out on the inverter. A lightning and surge arrester is essential in order to prevent damage to both the PV modules and the inverters. Protectionagainstfaultsinthe ACnetwork A miniature circuit breaker protects from short circuit and overload also on the ACside (alternating current). In the case of frequency converters in PV systems, smooth DC residual currents or currents with low residual ripple may occur. These are sensed by a residual current operated circuit breaker (RCCB) Type B. Overvolt age protection must also be provided for the AC network. Safefeedingandrecordingofthe generatedenergy Digital Ecounters record the amount of energy fed in and, in a calibrated design, can also be used as the basis for account ing. The entire PV system can be quickly and safely disconnected and reconnected by means of a fuse switch disconnector on the meter panel.

Functionaldescription
The miniature circuit breaker series 5SY for universal current is the ideal line protector and offers reliable protection against short circuits and overloads. Suitable measures must be taken in the construction of the system in order to guarantee that no polarity reversal can occur in DC operation. Standard: EN 609742. The PV fuse (line fuse) also protects the PV modules and connecting cables. It has a rated voltage of 1000 V DC and operational class gPV. It offers the benefits of a very compact design (1 MW) at an attractive price. Standards: IEC 60269, IEC 602696(draft), IEC 60947 Standards: IEC 60269, IEC 602696(draft) For isolating solar modules. The shutdown device should be positioned as near as possible to the solar generator. Can be switched remotely with optional accessories. Standards: IEC/EN 609473 Type 2 surge arresters protect the photovoltaic generator and the inverter against overvoltages. Remote signaling means that failure of the device can be reported. Variant for plants with high requirements on leackage current freeness available. Standards: IEC 603647712, IEC 616431, EN 6164311

The treephase inverter converts the generated direct current for infeed into the AC power grid. In that process a peak efficiency of 98% and more is achieved. Its robust construction and the protection level IP 65 enable an application as well in the indoor as in the outdoor area.

Miniature circuit breakers offer reliable protection against overload and short circuits. Standard: EN 608981 Standards: EN 608981, 2; EN 609472 Universal currentsensitive RCCBs of type B and type B+ have an additional transformer which is applied with a control signal. The change in the trans former operating range caused by smooth DC residual currents can therefore be evaluated. The soughtafter protection function is therefore ensured. Standards: IEC/EN 61008, IEC/EN 62423 Lightning arresters type 1 or surge arresters type 2 are used in main distribution boards or subdistribution boards. They protect lowvoltage systems against overvoltages and high surge currents. Standards: IEC 6164311; DIN EN 6164311 Digital Ecounters record both active and reactive energy with a high degree of precision. They are available in a calibrated design in accordance with the new Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) 2004/22/EC. They can therefore also be used for accounting purposes for the energy drawn. Standards: EN 504701, EN 504703, EN 6205323, EN 6205331
