A tie bar of cross - sectional area 1000mm2 is subjected to an axial tensile load of 70 kN. Find the normal, tangential and resultant stresses on a plane the normal to which makes an angle of 300 with the axis of the bar. Find also the max. values of these stresses and the planes on which they act. [20] 2. (a) Graphically represent max. shear strain energy theory. (b) The three principal stresses at a point in an elastic material are 1.5 P (tensile), P (tensile) and 0.5 P (compressive). If the elastic limit in tension is 190 Mpa, determine the value of P according to the max. shear strain energy theory. [8+12] 3. Calculate the dia. of shaft which will transmit 50 H.P. at 150 R.P.M; if the shearing stress is limited to 50N/mm2 and the angle of twist should not exceed 10 in 2.5m length. N = 8X104N/mm2 . [20] 4. A close coiled helical spring is made of 10mm dia. wire coiled to a mean dia. of 120mm the number of turns being 10. It is xed at one end and a twist of 15 N m is applied at the other end. Taking E = 200GN/m2 , nd (a) the max. bending stress induced (b) angle of twist of spring and (c) number of turns after application of torque. [8+8+4] Max Marks:100

5. A cylindrical steel chimney 40m high, 2m external dia, thickness of metal 0.15m at base, is exposed to a horizontal wind pressure, whose intensity varies as the square root of the height above the ground. At a height of 16m above ground the intensity of wind-pressure on a at surface is 2.4kN/m2 . The self-weight of the chimney is 30kN. If the coecient wind pressure is 0.6, calculate the stresses at the base and sketch the variation. [20] 6. Explain the analysis of trusses by (a) Method of joints (b) Method of sections (c) Tension coecient method. [20]

8. A timber joist, 100 mm wide and 200 mm deep, is freely supported over a span of 4 meters. It is subjected to a bending moment of 30,000 cm kg at the central section, the trace OY of the plane of loading being inclined at 300 to the principal axis OY. Locate the neutral axis and calculate the maximum bending stress induced. If the bending moment is due to a total load of 600 kg uniformly distributed over the whole span calculate the deection. Take E = 105 kg/cm2 . [20]
