British Council Language Assistantship How do I apply?
EVERY STUDENT interested in applying for the Language Assistantship must read a copy of these notes. You must ensure that you read fully the information from the British Council Language Assistantship website: http://www.languageassistant.co.uk 1. Please be aware that the deadline for your application to be handed into the School Office (Arts One 1.08) is 4pm on Thursday 24 November 2011, not 1 December 2011 as will be printed on the application forms. Forms must be submitted in person to the School Office. 2. Please read the information on the website carefully before making your application as there are different requirements for each country. 3. It is vital that you research thoroughly the areas within your country that you wish to apply for before making your application. You must be aware that you are only able to express an area preference and you are not guaranteed to be placed in your first preference. Therefore you need to be prepared to accept a place in any of your three area preferences. Also you must be aware that your placement can be anywhere within the area that you are allocated to and therefore it is important that you research the whole area rather than the main cities in that area. 4. The British Council have a 2-part application system: one part online and one part paper system. You will need to visit their website http://www.languageassistant.co.uk You must click on the heading English Language Assistants and then the section How do I apply? and there you will find all the information you need prior to making an application and the link to the online process. 5. You must fill in the information carefully on the online application form. You must take particular care in entering your email address as if you make an error you will not be able to proceed to the next step of the application process and it is not possible to register online a second time, 6. Once you have filled in the form online you will be sent an acknowledgement email to the email address you have supplied. This email will include your personal ID number and the following attachments, together with instructions: A PDF of the data you have just submitted

A 3-page application form (word document) for you to complete on screen A reference form (word document) to be given to your adviser A checklist of supporting documentation to submit. You MUST submit your completed checklist with your application

7. You will need to submit the University Reference form to your Adviser for a reference. Most advisers will give the completed reference directly to the office and so you do not need to worry about submitting it with your application form. However, please be considerate and give your adviser plenty of time to complete the reference before the deadline. 8. The PDF form you have been sent is page one of your application form. If you need to make any changes to the document, please make them by hand on the printout in red pen and large writing. 9. The word document is pages 2-4 of your application form. You must put your personal ID number (which will be given to you in the acknowledgement email) onto the first page of the word application form. 10. Once you have completed the application form you must print the PDF document and the word document three times each. Please staple each set of pages together in the right order (pdf document first and then the word document). 11. When you hand in your application form, you will need to submit three copies of your application form (one original and two photocopies). However, you will need to have an original signature (not photocopies) on page 4 of your application form on ALL 3 COPIES of the application form. 12. Please be aware that acceptance onto the Language Assistantship Programme depends on your successful completion of the application form. Most students (except those applying for Canada, Switzerland or Latin America) are not interviewed and therefore it is vital that you submit an impressive application form. Submitting an application form does NOT guarantee you a place on the programme. 13. It is imperative that you regularly check the email address that you have supplied to the British Council as any invitation for interview will be sent to this address. 14. If you need any help or advice about the Assistantship Scheme or in completing your application form please contact the School Office (Arts One 1.08 sllf@qmul.ac.uk 020 7882 8330) or your Year Abroad Co-ordinator.
