A Weekly Newsletter of the Lubbock Civil Air Patrol Squadron SWR-TX-293 Edition #15 April 10, 2011

From the Commander

A total of 1620 letters went out last week (the initial 1581, then an additional 39 that had to be re-labeled). We have received $2550 for 170 wreaths! I'll be asking for volunteers to record donor information, research addresses of returned mail and send new letters to the correct addresses. We'll be leaving for Dallas on Friday to attend the Texas Wing Conference! I'll firm up plans with those traveling with me within a couple of days. Be prepared to learn a lot and have a great time!

Priority News Items

1. April 14-17th 2011 is the Texas Wing Conference.
(from TX WING)

Cadets that have a Class B uniform in good condition, including nicely shined shoes, are MORE THAN WELCOME to attend the Wing Conference. Cadets do NOT need a Class A uniform to attend!! Seniors, the corporate uniform, or the Blue polo shirt/gray slacks is very acceptable! For the banquet, Cadets are welcome in their Class B's and seniors can wear a nice suit or slacks and a sports jacket. Uniforms are nice, but for seniors, are NOT a required item at the banquet!! For CADETS you will have many opportunities including meeting /greeting your NATIONAL COMMANDER. Gen. Courter doesn't attend many wing conferences, but she most certainly will be at ours. We also have a former SR-71 Blackbird Spy plane pilot who will share with you a recently de-classified mission he flew from England to Murmansk, on the northern coast of Russia, and home of the Russian Naval Fleet. A NASA engineer will be presenting a program on NASA Space Suits. There is a Medal of Honor association presentation. For those older cadets that are serious about attending the Air Force Academy or any of the other military academies, we'll have a presentation

on exactly what subjects and extra curricular activities you need to be doing NOW, to help you become selected. The South West Region CAC is bringing in their team to make a SWR-CAC presentation on the importance of CAC to cadet squadrons. For those who wish, at 1500 hours on Saturday afternoon, we'll provide transportation to the Cavanaugh Flight museum, located at the nearby Addison airport. This is one of the PREMIER Flight museums in the U. S. Entry into the museum... FREE for cadets, $ 5 for senior members. We'll also have transportation to pick you back up at 1700 and get you back to the Marriott Quorum hotel, in Addison, where all of this is happening. I hope this helps some of you who live close enough to the D/FW area to come and make a day of it. The Continental Breakfast is from 0700 til 0800. Opening remarks / General Assembly is from 0800 til 1000 and the training seminars start promptly at 1005. The banquet should wrap up around 2130 to 2200 hours. COME ON OUT AND ENJOY AN EXCELLENT WING CONFERENCE!!

2. Our Squadron earned a AFA Scholarship of $250.00 to allow senior and cadet members to travel to Sweetwater, TX to see the WW2 Womens Aviation Museum. Congrats to Maj Littlesoldier and Cpt. Maroste for making it happen. This trip is set for 28 May.

3. LESA is also approaching. 18 26 June. http://www.lesa1.org/

Understanding the cost of when things go wrong (Japan) Not CAP related directly, but disasters are on our dance card. In this video they are measuring fallout as they travel through the new forbidden zone. Their exposure rate approaches 100+ Sv/hr. In ten hours, at that rate, irreversible organ damage begins. Remember, every building you see in this video is ABANDONED now and is uninhabitable for the next few hundred years. Just mind boggling amazing, and jaw dropping tragic.
