Berkeley County Youth Fair Fundraiser

The Martinsburg Composite Squadron continued its yearly tradition of parking cars for the Berkeley County Youth Fair. This event resulted in a $2,500.00 donation to the squadron, and ran from July 31st to August 6th. This year a total of 23 Cadets and 9 Senior Members participated at least one day, contributing to a total of 377 staff-hours. Capt Petty expressed his appreciation to all the participants at the following meeting. Cadets Ryan Whetsel and Kendall Barrett tied for the most hours worked. They were presented with Commanders Coins by WV Wing Commander Col Dennis Barron, in recognition of their efforts. Special thanks go to Lt Frank Panek for being Project Manager; Capt Dirk Stansbury for being there each weekday at 4PM; and Col Barron for working the most hours of all the Senior Members. As Col Barron mentioned, he is probably the only Wing Commander you will ever see working a parking detail. In appreciation for those who helped make the Youth Fair parking detail a success, the Squadron held a swimming party, on Friday, August 20th, at the home of Capt Dirk and Mrs. Carol Stansbury. Over a dozen Cadets and three Senior Members attended. The Cadets spent the majority of the time in the pool, except when they stopped to eat! The squadron also presented each participant with one of our new Squadron t-shirts.

TOBR Air Show Tragedy

the cadets were thoroughly debriefed about the incident and shortly thereafter, met with the Martinsburg Squadron's Character Development Officer, Pastor Gary Gourley. I believe that the critical incident response was handled in a very professional manner by the senior members present, and I especially want to note Capt Gourley's quick and appropriate response to the incident. I feel confident that all of the cadets' anxieties and reactions were dealt with in a very competent manner, although the effected Unit Commanders may want to have a follow-up discussion with their cadets who were in attendance. Again, I want to express my pride at the professionalism shown by the cadets, the senior leaders, and Capt Gary Gourley, in the face of such a tragic accident.

Prior to arriving at the air show to assist the Air Guard with various duties, I had given the cadets a safety briefing, part of which included the advisory that if any emergency occurred during the air show, the cadets were to immediately report to a central location for Unfortunately, the air show ended abruptly accountability purposes and then follow the directions of the seniors in after a tragic aircraft accident on the first day. ELT Search
A combined flight crew consisting of Potomac Highlands Maj Hoffmann and Martinsburgs Capt Larry Dean participated in a very difficult ELT search during the night and morning of July 27, 2011. They were starting on a CD training sortie when called by the Lt Col Gene Thorn to fly a search mission. After about an hour and a half they were able to track the ELT to an area near Spencer, WV.

While flying over the field the owner apparently saw the CAP aircraft and quickly turned off his ELT.

Chick-fil-A Spirit Night

July 9, 2011 Four cadets and four senior members participated in a squadron fundraiser held at the Martinsburg Chick-fil-A Restaurant. The squadron received 20% of sales ($50.00) from guests who presented a special flyer, between 5 - 8 pm.

MANY THANKS to the members of the Martinsburg Squadron who helped with the Adopt-a-Highway project, on Saturday, Sept. 24th. We had a total of 12 members (4 seniors and 8 cadets) report for duty. Within 2 hours, we had picked up 17 bags of litter along the 2 mile stretch of highway. Everyone who helped received a special gift from the Adopt-a-Highway Program. This makes the third and final trash pick-up for the year. In 2011, the squadron filled a total of 41 bags of trash along Paynes Ford Road, and spend 62 man-hours in the process. This also completes the squadron's 14th year of service to the Adopt-a-Highway Program. During that time, the squadron members have pick up a total of 1116 bags of litter, which equates to 39,060 pounds of trash, or 19.53 tons of highway litter! That is a remarkable achievement! My thanks to everyone who helped during this past year. Great Job! Dennis D.
