Management education is deep rooted in India with a large number of universities offering MBA degrees. The MBA (Business Sustainability) programme offered by TERI University stands out from the more conventional management education and is pivoted on a refined fulcrum of synergy between traditional management disciplines on the one hand and the rising concerns for sustainability on the other. The ethos of the MBA programme of TERI University is also based on the common thread between healthy businesses, healthy environments and healthy societies that essentially provide the foundation of an inclusive growth process. Businesses in India and across the world have increasingly started realizing that the basic mantra for getting an edge over others is to do their core business differently and reorient their structure and transform leadership from being driven primarily by profit-motive and cost competitiveness to becoming more responsive to consumer needs, societal and environmental concerns and fostering value-added relationships with stakeholders and community. This is not just an MBA programme covering conventional management subjects as in other Business Schools; its an MBA+ programme, which additionally leverages TERIs knowledge and intellectual capital in sustainable development to deepen the social and ethical consciousness of management education in India. TERI University relies on its synergies with TERI for a stronger focus and emphasis on real time exposure, field work while making effective use of the vast knowledge and data base of research that TERI possesses in order to give its students the real picture of the industry standards and situation. The graduates of this programme will become competent business leaders with a holistic and long-term perspective for a world that demands new skills & attitude, with a focus on sustained competitive advantage. The programme is aimed at fresh graduates as well as mid-career professionals.

Introduction

Recent developments worldwide have clearly demonstrated that not only do business leaders and managers need to acquire new knowledge but also a totally different set of values. The impact of business on society and the environment need to be integrated with normal business decisions. The MBA programme on business sustainability being launched by TERI is a distinctly different programme of education which would not only give graduates knowledge on the conventional tools and techniques of management but also a much larger view of business operations as they relate to social responsibilities and environmental protection. It would also equip them with understanding of how environmental damage and climate change can adversely affect business operations. This programme is clearly the first of its kind in the world just as the TERI University has been a unique innovator as an institution of higher learning.
