The sessions are chaired by respected industry figures, selected for their subject specific knowledge and recognised industry standing. Presentations are generally kept to 20 minutes and the timetable provides for questions and answers to flow between the panel and the floor. Session descriptions
Session one: regulatory update where are we now?
Despite there now being the requisite 30 signatory states signed up to the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments 2004, the Convention has yet to be ratified vis--vis requisite tonnage. This is leaving a host of uncertainties in its wake. Against a backdrop of higher standards than the IMO in the United States, potentially different approaches from European and other port state control, and the fact that ballast water treatment systems are still expensive pieces of technology shipowners need to understand the full implications of the regulations and where any future legislation is likely to head. This opening session will provide a critical update on current thinking from the perspectives of different stakeholders.

Session two: system suppliers' forum

Following an independent overview of the current suite of ballast water technologies currently available, and an outlook of future development of second generation technologies, representatives from suppliers of different BWT system technologies are questioned in a structured spotlight session by the chairman and the audience on the operating performance and unique characteristics of their respective system methodologies to give shipowners a clearer understanding of expectations and options for their fleet the differences, the advantages, the capabilities and availability, and the USPs for various ship types, sizes and trading routes. This session will also shed light on recent R&D developments.

Session three: mapping the shipowners' decision matrix

This session will look at the realities and practicalities of when and how to specify ballast water treatment systems, and how, where and when to install. It will cover specification, installation and retrofit how to do it; retrofitting the process; timings, whether to dry dock; trials; on-costs (lifecycle); and consideration of equipment, size of equipment, power consumption, additives, generated gas, compatibility with tank coatings, bare steel, flow rates. This session will also cover the critical issues and uncertainties around type approval.

Session four: the operational challenges

In addition to making that 'go/no go' decision, shipowners also have to consider a number of ballast water system operational challenges for their fleets. This session will look at the key challenges and what the shipowner needs to know about them coatings and corrosion; shoreside and onboard training and awareness; and data and documentation.

Session five: filtration and separation forum

Filters are until now a crucial component of any ballast water treatment system. Representatives from the leading filtration and separation system suppliers will be questioned in a structured and directed 'spotlight' session by the chairman and the audience on the technology, how it works, the capabilities and the issues, including compatibility & supply chain issues and testing results.

Session six: compliance, monitoring and enforcement

This session will consider compliance, monitoring and enforcement from the equipment and testing & compliance techniques; to the integration of this equipment in BWT systems; to how Port State Control may use equipment and techniques for enforcement from a regulatory perspective.

Session seven: ship operators forum

Ship owners will provide their perspective on installation, operation, auditing and inspection. This session will include perspectives from those shipowners/operators who are pro-installation and have systems in operation, as well as owners who have committed but are still to install/operate, and owners who have yet to commit. They will give their rationales, speak about their experiences and debate the alternatives.

Mike Porter, Events Director, Riviera Maritime Media (Panel Chairman)

Mike Porter has probably developed and managed more events than anybody else in the marine and offshore industries. Previously he spent nine years with Informa PLC, where he was Managing Director of Lloyds List Events and Lloyds Maritime Academy. His first job was with Lloyds Salvage Association over 30 years ago, and since then he has worked as a ship designer, surveyor, design engineer and naval architect. He spent five years with The Royal Institution of Naval Architects as technical director, where, in 1993, he first became involved in conferences.
John Paine, Technical Programme Manager, A&P Group

John Paine has worked in the shiprepair Industry for over 44 years. He started as an apprentice marine electrical engineer with Harland & Wolff, Southampton, and subsequently worked for Vosper Thornycroft, British Ship Repairers, Thew Engineering and A&P Southampton. His career has encompassed technical roles such as electrical manager,steelwork production manager and ship project manager. He has also gained valuable commercial experience working in the estimating department. All of this experience supports John in his current position as A&P Group Technical Programme Manager. Here, he is responsible for A&Ps commitment to green technologies, including emissions control, hull coatings and ballast water treatment. Mr Paine is currently pursuing a number of ballast water treatment and exhaust scrubber retrofit opportunities for the A&P Group.
Capt Peter Lundahl Rasmussen, Technical Officer, BIMCO

Peter Lundahl Rasmussen is a master mariner with some 12 years seagoing experience gained on board chemical and oil tankers. He joined BIMCO as technical consultant in 1996 and left in 2007 taking up the position of fleet director responsible for the operation of a fleet of multipurpose ships, chemical tankers and VLCCs. He returned to his current position in BIMCO in 2009 and has for more than 13 years been actively involved at NGO level in the marine environmental protection and safety related work within IMO.

Chris Wiley, Chairman, IMO Ballast Water Working Group

Chris Wiley straddles two Canadian Federal Government departments. He is the Environmental Issues Manager for Transport Canada Ontario Region and the Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator for Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Central and Arctic Region. He spent fifteen years as a chief engineer on icebreakers, product tankers, passenger ships, supply vessels and megayachts. He joined the Canadian Federal government in 1993 and has been involved in the ballast water file since 1994, leading Canadas response to the discharge of aquatic invasive species from ships into the Great Lakes.

Jon Stewart, President, International Maritime Technology Consultants

Jon Stewart is the President of International Maritime Technology Consultants, Inc. After co-founding two maritime service and technology companies, he formed the consultancy in 2005, offering consulting services to government and industry with a specialisation in the fields of ballast water and air emissions. In addition to consulting work with various shipowners, ship operators, and technology developers he acts as a technology industry conduit to a variety of governmental and regulatory bodies. He has served on the US delegation to IMO as a technical advisor on ballast water issues for the last four years.

Meindert Vink, Senior Advisor, The Netherlands Shipping Inspectorate

Meindert Vink has been working on environmental matters for the Dutch authorities for a number of years. Having worked as an inspector, he is now a senior advisor to the

Netherlands Shipping Inspectorate. Mr Vink represents the body at both EU and IMO levels. A particular focus of his present activities is developing sampling procedures in anticipation of the entry into force of the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments. His background as a marine engineer has been invaluable here as it means he has a practical insight into the operational realities onboard ships.
Professor Dr Marcel Veldhuis, Senior Scientist, Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research

Marcel Veldhuis is a senior scientist, and Head of the Department of Biological Oceanography, at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). Since 2004 he has been coordinating a scientific team studying coastal biodiversity and in particular invasive organisms transported by ships. From 2009 onwards he has been the coordinator of the EU sponsored program me North Sea Ballast Water Opportunity (www.northseaballastwater.eu). Within this program me national administrations, industry, research and stakeholder join together in an integrated approach in the mitigation of invasive organisms using ballast water treatment systems on ships.
Leonardo Sonzio, Director, Environmental Services, Wrtsil

Leonardo Sonzio graduated from Trieste University with first class honours in naval architecture, specialising in ship resistance and propulsion. He joined Wrtsil in 2007, specialising in environmental issues. He helped develop the Wrtsil Fuel Strategy, now a cornerstone of the organisations work in cleaner and sustainable shipping. Since September 2008, he has been part of the team developing Wrtsil Shipping Scenarios to 2030; focusing on environmental issues. As a project manager in Wrtsil Ship Power Technology, he worked on the development of solutions to reduce air emissions from ships, with particular emphasis on LNG propulsion and exhaust abatement technologies. In 2010, Leonardo moved to the services division, taking care of environmental issues for the existing fleet. He is now heading the environmental services team; responsible for sales support and the development of solution and application engineering.
