Bermejo Humanae Vitae of Pope Paul IV

10-0598 Jan. 30, 2012

The Union and Procreation is established by God and it cannot be separated from one another. Since God was the one who established it, nobody has the right to ruin its unitive significance and procreative significance that is essential to the marriage act. The marriage act has a nature of binding husband and wife in a unity that is very intact that its main objective is to create a new life. The safeguarding of the unitive and procreative significance in marriage is a proof of true mutual love and the obligation of husband and wife towards a responsible parenthood. This teaching is harmonious with human reason. The unity of husband and wife is not merely due to emotional drives but what makes it so special is that it is formed through the love of God. Contraceptives are means of going against Gods teaching of living a procreative life. The doctrine teaches all the people to bring back the old norm of a procreative life because nowadays, people turn to such contraceptives for their personal reasons which contradict Gods teaching as well as its exercise of being a true Christian. The inseparable connection between the unitive and the procreative significance inherent to marriage act is that God unifies both husband in wife in one body, one mind and soul in order to bear a fruit that should not be hindered nor blocked by the use of contraceptives. A married couple must be reminded that being married has a set of responsibilities along with it. Responsible parenthood must be aware about the biological processes and its proper functions. In procreation, the human mind understands the biological laws and respects it capabilities. Responsible parenthood is put into action by the very fact of generating more children and by means of not having more children for a period of time for serious reasons and

with due respect to morality. Responsible parenthood is important since God established it and by the very fact that it touches the objective moral order and it is guided by the conscience. A husband and wife must be able to set their priorities as well as their duties as Catholics and the whole aspect of their lives. It is not their decision to act however they want to but, whatever they do must correspond to Gods will and not of theirs, it is standard. The responsible parenthood is the familys spirituality and at the beginning of marriage, couples are binded as one in order to be gifts for each other. God will be the source of life and love which families need in the present. The goal of responsible parenthood is for the spouses, children and God, it is not only for ones good but rather, it must be for the good of everyone even if problems arise. The love of a married couple must most of all, be centered in God and in the church. The Pope explains that any form of contraception is unlawful. Contraceptive birth control is a grave sin which also disregards a husband and wifes conjugal act. The woman has a natural cycle and there are times when a woman is infertile or incapable of bearing a child. What the Pope is trying to communicate to us is that it is acceptable for couples to engage in a conjugal act in order to prevent pregnancy only in that certain point in time. This type is permitted and God is still included in the conjugal act between the husband and wife. Taking advantage of infertile periods is due to reasons for spacing births, arising from the physical and psychological condition of husband and wife or from external circumstances that does not go against moral principles. Contraception hurts everyone who is involved and the married couples relationship with God is damaged.
