Introduction
The Open Transport Network (OTN) is a private communication system providing an extension over ber for voice, data, LAN and video communications. The system is based on nodes which are interconnected to two pointto-point ber optic links creating two counter rotating rings. This topology, in combination with the systems built-in fault recovery features, ensures an extremely high system reliability.

The 4 interface card slots in the N215 node can accommodate a mixture of different interface cards. The interface cards are designed to transport all trafc for voice, data, LAN and video applications transparently through the network. The common logic card (BORA150, BORA600 or BORA2500) is the N215 nodes central control block. It holds the connections and conguration settings programmed by the network operator via the OTN Management System (OMS). The Optical Transceivers convert the rings optical signal to an electrical signal, and vice versa. The distance between two consecutive OTN nodes in the network depends on the ber characteristics and the type of Optical Transceivers used. The OTN system can be deployed

Description
The OTN system is completely modular. The common equipment consists of the 19 rack mountable chassis with one or two system power supply modules, a common logic card with on-board optical transceiver modules and a fan unit.

in networks covering distances from a few hundred meters up to 2000 kilometers (1244 miles). In this way, OTN offers the solution for mixed transmission requirements over medium to large distances.

x and y indicate the type of the integrated optical transceivers (refer to the relevant sheets as indicated above). A mix of optical transceivers on one common logic card (e.g. SL or LS) is also possible. In case the BORA card with plug-on transceivers (ref. A31003Z3931-S131-*-765) must be used, the low speed slot is also used by the BORA card. In that case, the Low Speed slot will be unavailable for interface cards and max. 3 interface cards can be installed in the node in this case. Two different Power Supply Units (PSUs) are available: 90-264 VAC (also capable of working with 125 VDC) and 18-60 VDC. A single PSU is capable of powering the N215 node, but a second PSU can be added for redundancy reasons. It is possible to mix PSUs of different types. The OTN system works according to the well-known TDM transmission principle (Time Division Multiplexing) allowing to integrate many different protocols onto one medium. TDM frames of 31.25 s circulate over the ber optic ring and pass through each node in the ring. The minimum bandwidth that can be assigned to one connection is one bit of the frame, which equals 32 kbps of effective bandwidth. Connections can use from one bit up to hundreds of bits, as is required by the type of service.

Operation
The OTN N215 node can be used in OTN-150 (150 Mbps), OTN-600 (600 Mbps) and OTN-2500 (2.5 Gbps) networks. It is compatible with N22 and N2011 (for 600 Mbps) nodes, which can work at the same backbone speeds and which have 8 interface slots. The N215 node provides 4 slots for a mixture of interface cards. One slot is a so called Low Speed slot, providing a maximum of 36 Mbps to the user interface, the other 3 slots are High Speed slots, providing a maximum of 147 Mbps to the interface cards. The N215 node can be equipped with a common logic card with integrated optics:

MTBF of the Power Supplies (25C / 77F) >100 000 hours
