Section 1.1: Introduction

In the classical sense, Organization Development (OD) is the systematic application of behavioral science knowledge to bring about a planned change in organizations. Its objectives are a higher quality of work-life, productivity, adaptability, and organizational effectiveness. The focus essentially is on change in attitudes, behaviors, styles, values, strategies, processes, systems, and structures. This is done so that the organization can lead and adapt to competitive actions, technological advances and the pace of change within the environment. The emergence of OD in the middle of the twentieth century denoted a certain visible movement in the social and behavioral sciences. OD moved out of the confines of academia, and particularly into organizations and other formal groups. OD was now at the forefront of the task of dealing with the human aspects of social collectivities. It was born out of a context interested in participation, ownership, development and maturity of groups for learning and task performance, feedback and planned change. In the current scenario, OD is a discipline and an approach. It focuses on managing organizational health and fitness through processes of shaping the context as against coping with crisis. As such, OD takes a systemic orientation while dealing with organizational challenges with a strong value centric core. For organizations to feel healthy and vibrant today, they need to have the capability to foster individual and collective processes. These in turn generate self-renewing and revitalizing experiences for the whole organization. This is fast becoming crucial for the well being of the organization to enable business success. Thus, OD today needs to be part of the lexicon of business leaders and managers, as much as that of HR Leaders and specialist OD practitioners.

Section 1.2: Why an Internship in OD?

In todays dynamic environment, there is a palpable reality of change and transformation in organizations. Change is happening around us all the time, and inexorably. On the one hand, we are witnessing organizations and institutions self-destruct and collapsing dramatically. On the other, new organizations are being designed and created that offer hope. They promise offerings relevant to the society and the environment in the present and the future. Given this context, there is an ever-increasing need for professionals equipped with the philosophy for, and pragmatics of leading and facilitating change and transformation. The education system does provide basic theoretical frameworks for learning in OD but is limited to just that - provision of theoretical frameworks without adequate integration of practice. In light of this, there is a growing need to create and foster a body of vibrant OD practice that integrates theory with applied knowledge and action relevant to the Indian Context. Sumedhas Academy for Human Context has, over the years, become alive to this emergent need in the world of industry and social organizations. Through several of its Fellows, who work as practitioners, consultants, or academicians in many organizations in India and abroad, Sumedhas has developed a distinctive approach to OD. The OD Internship being offered through the IAOD-S is a robust response to this need, and carries with it an intent to blend existing OD knowledge and practice with those that have been developed by Sumedhas practitioners and Fellows. In 2008, Sumedhas rolled out its first Winter Program, in which the OD Internship was launched. The Winter Program 2012 is the fifth program.

Section 1.3: Architecture of the OD Internship of IAOD-S

The OD Internship of IAOD-S is a multi-module learning opportunity that is intended to accredit professionals in the field of OD. The field of OD has generated and fostered many diverse traditions, approaches, and practices, not to mention the plethora of tools and techniques that came with these. Sumedhas Fellows have added to this vast body by bringing in their own frameworks, theories and paradigms based on identity level work and process work. The OD Internship of IAOD-S integrates the OD approaches of Sumedhas Fellows with the approaches of many classical architects of OD, and other contemporary experts. The modular approach of the OD Internship is designed to deliver the internship in a reasonably flexible manner. Interns can pace their movement through the internship with consideration to their time available and their desired absorption rate. The architecture can be depicted visually (and is described in the pages that follow) -

The Internship consists of three spaces of exploration: 1. The Process space: a. Process The intern is expected to enter the OD Internship with at least one week of self-level exploratory work. This is needed, as the concept of use of Self in the field has been acknowledged as a muchneeded resource for the OD practitioner to conduct their practice with integrity. Such self-level exploratory experience can be through either a Theory Practice lab in Sumedhas / ISABS / Aasthaa or through a Group Relations Conference (GRC) from the Tavistock tradition. As part of the OD internship, the intern would also be expected to attend the Lab in the Exploration in Self, Systemic Processes and Role Taking offered by Sumedhas, usually in May every year. In this, the intern can expect to go through an in-depth exploration of the world of systems, their role

b. c.

taking propensities, their orientations to authority, power, politics, peerage, and the world of competitiveness. The above process exploration, along with the self-level exploration is expected to give the intern a robust grounding in bringing in their selves in a wholesome manner as a change agent in systems of various kinds. The Theory space:

2.

a. This is made available during the Winter Program through the Foundation Modules (FMs) 1 - 3, and b. An intern beginning the internship in OD is expected to start with a bundled offering of FM 1 and FM
through the Application Modules (AMs) 2, and then proceed sequentially through FM 3 before doing their AMs. However, they can also pace their movement through the other modules as briefly described earlier. As an example a new intern can do FMs 1, 2 and 3 together this winter program 8.5 consecutive days of course work. Alternatively, they can choose to attend only FMs 1 and 2 (6.5 days) and come back another year for FM 3.

3.

The Practice space:

a. This is deployed by the interns in their work location, typically through a project (including a project
paper) to be completed after their AMs.

Upon successful completion of the course requirements of the OD Internship, the IAOD-S executive council would consider qualification of the intern as Accredited OD Practitioner of IAOD-S. Such interns may also further pursue Fellowship in Sumedhas by completing connected requirements of Sumedhas for this purpose. (Contact the Convenor IAOD-S for details relating to this). In summary, to become an Accredited OD Practitioner in Sumedhas, one requires: Entry requirements of self level exploratory work completion (described above). Completion of FMs 1-3 of OD Internship. Completion of AMs of OD Internship. Completion of lab in Explorations in Self, Sytemic Processes and Role taking offered by Sumedhas. Satisfactory completion of a project back home and acceptance of a project paper on review Invitation by the Executive Council of IAOD-S.

A suitable Certificate of Completion would be awarded to all interns who complete parts (2), (3) and (4) of the above, upon application.

Section 1.4: Who is the Internship intended for?

The Internship in OD is intended for: Business/ Organization Leaders with at least 5 years functional leadership experience HR / OD / Learning & Development professionals with at least 5 years work experience, preferably over 7 years experience OD Consultants Experienced Trainers, and (Other than the above) - People deeply interested in leading and managing change, organization transformation & Institution Building practices, and with relevant real-world experience of about 7 years

Section 1.5: Internship in Organization Development

Internship in OD Foundation Modules : 27th January 05th February 2012 (for first-time interns) Internship in OD Application Modules : 27th January 04th February 2012 (for returning interns)

THE FOUNDATION MODULES (FMs) AND APPLICATION MODULES (AMs)

Objectives: At the end of the Foundation Modules, the participants would be able to: Understand the distinctions between diverse philosophical strands in relation to man, organizations and the world at large Appreciate the nature of influence that various social sciences have had on our understanding of man, human processes, collectivities, etc. Appreciate the convergence and divergence of the different approaches that are a part of "OD Theory & Practice" Gain an appreciation of Sumedhas' perspectives on OD and their implications for practice

At the end of the Application Modules, the participants would be able to: Get acquainted with specific intervention methods (and the theory behind them) constituting the OD practice at the levels of the individual, groups, and / or organizations (large systems). in specific application domains like Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) / NGOs / Mergers & Acquisitions (M&As), etc. Identify the goals, levels of aggregation, and the methods that one would like to hone expertise in to effect change / alignment, recalibration and renewal. Program Design:

The program is structured with a blend of theory sessions, group learning and practice sessions, peer-learning opportunities, as well as interesting quizzes. The program design leans on a phenomenological approach to
human systems with self as an instrument to understand, diagnose and intervene in human systems. The program has three andragogic elements: 1. Instructional Classroom sessions 2. Quasi Experiential and Experience-sharing Sessions 3. Consultation Sessions The sessions cover a wide range of areas that typically have significant academic underpinnings in the form of research / theory / constructs.

Sessions: Application Modules: With the focus of building an application and practice focus for the returnee interns, certain application modules will be offered every winter. These modules can be chosen by IAOD-S from time to time, based on either of the following criteria To highlight the application possibilities at the intersection points of OD and various classes of living systems such as OD and the individual OD and the small group or team, OD and the whole system (or organization), the society, etc AND / OR The prevailing milieu / zeitgeist in the living systems that provides a dynamic context for the field of OD (eg - Appreciative Inquiry could be one such offering, which is drawing increased attention in the world of corporates as well as social organizations, so also can Theory U, or Integral Leadership, etc)AND / OR OD as applied in specific systems like PSUs, NGOs, M&A situations etc Assimilation Sessions: The assimilation sessions are interwoven into the program at various appropriate points to help the participants reflect on and assimilate for themselves, their learning from the sessions preceding each assimilation session. In these sessions, in which participation will be facilitated by some faculty anchors, the participants will also be encouraged to articulate their dilemmas, as well as their differences with the content that they have been exposed to in the preceding sessions Cinema Screening: These sessions are designed to understand the larger socio-philosophical themes that operate in the background of OD through the medium of cinema. The carefully chosen films provide the backdrop for reflection and dialogue on the themes / issues the films seek to explore, and their implications for people as human beings, organization members, organization development and the larger social context Consultation Sessions: These are consultative sessions where the sophomore participants would be divided into small groups and each group would be provided the services of a faculty. The role of these sessions would be to offer consultation to individual participants to decide on a project they will work on, and for detailed application / deployment back home. Foundation Module 1 Sumedhas Perspective and Foundational Underpinnings: Session on the Sumedhas Perspective on the human context, and its linkage with OD: This session will help the participants understand the broader human context that OD is part of. Inter alia, it will delve into fundamental questions like what does it mean to be human, the nature of organization, the nature of development, etc, and aim to articulate some of the core axioms and postulates that Sumedhas has been developing and using in its evolution as an Academy of Human Context, and of OD. Sessions on the Foundational Underpinnings of OD: These sessions will provide the participants with an introduction to the foundational underpinnings of OD from Philosophy as well as from some of the Social Sciences. The sessions will aim to explore the linkages between these foundational disciplines and the field of OD, rather than teach philosophy or the social sciences.

Foundation Module 2 Organization Theory and Constructs Kaleidoscope Sessions: The Organization Theory and Constructs Kaleidoscope is a distinctive event to be held during the program for the FM participants. This interactive event would offer to the participants, the essentials of Organization Theory as well as some of the core underlying concepts that inform OD, such as Action Science, Systems Theory, Gender and OD, Organization Culture and Change, Qualitative Research, etc. These sessions are a bouquet of concepts drawn from the sociology of organizations and Indian thought on organizations, not necessarily aligned to any one ideology. In that sense, they are intended to present a kaleidoscopic view to the participants, of the theory side of OD.

Foundation Module 3 OD in Practice Models of OD used by Sumedhas practitioners: These are sessions anchored by Fellows of Sumedhas, who have developed and deployed models of organization diagnosis and intervention. The aim of these sessions is to help build awareness of OD models of Sumedhas, in the interns attending the Foundation Modules. Role of OD Consultant & Models of Engagement: These are experience-sharing sessions with a select faculty sharing their experience of taking up the role of OD consultant. These sessions would offer the participant the opportunity to listen to, and interact with experienced practitioners first hand - their personal philosophy, their style, their world view and concerns, their experience in deployment, their joys and pains, etc. The sessions allow for an acquaintance with multiplicity of perspectives and styles. The participants can expect to draw unique learning and multiple perspectives on the role of OD consultants, whether internal or external. Fireside Sessions: The objective of a fireside session is to pick up a topical theme, or a perspective related to organization and management that is widely accepted but is seldom critically examined for its assumptions, context of its origination, or its limitations and treated as if it were universal truth...and explore it in an informal, light hearted, inclusive and dialogic manner that is fun, provocative and insightful. Learning Assessment : This is offered for first time participants who choose to do FMs 1 through 3 together. In this, they would be offered an opportunity to review their own life as a process and review it from an OD perspective of their choice. This review is preferred in the form of a written essay, however it could also be a non-written, ex-tempore reflective statement. These essays / statements would be discussed in an open review format along with faculty anchors on the last day. OD Quiz : Participants will have an opportunity to test out for themselves, what they have learnt during the days preceding the quiz which will consist of a number of multiple-choice questions, as well as caselets to exercise participants application proclivities. These quizzes will not be evaluated but will be shared and discussed in open forums with a view to both consolidate learning as well as leave participants with questions for further exploration. Plenary: Opening Plenary: This session would provide the participants an introduction to the program and the faculty as well as set the context for learning. This event also provides the participants a space to share their expectations. Closing Plenary: This wrap-up session will provide a forum for participants attending the whole program to reflect on the learning from the program and its application to back home issues and concerns.

Section 2.1 : Why a program on Conceptual Underpinnings of Process Work?

The idea of a program on Conceptual Underpinnings of Process Work (CUPW) was born from a felt need to redesign Sumedhas Internship in PW to imbue the interns with an appreciation of the conceptual canvas undergirding PW. It was felt that this could be done through exposing interns to the theoretical foundations in the social sciences, to the philosophical underpinnings for process work, and to a smorgasbord of relevant constructs, tools, technologies, and approaches with particular reference to the Sumedhian perspectives. As this was being designed, it became clear that this program could be of immense benefit not only to Sumedhas PW interns but equally so to the larger universe of process workers in India, regardless of the PW institution they associate with. Thus, the program CUPW is being offered to Sumedhas PW Interns/ Sumedhas Fellows who may want to revisit and renew their conceptual roots in PW Any intern in PW in any PW institution suggested on Page 2 Any person who is interested in learning about the conceptual frameworks surrounding PW, after having completed at least one week of personal growth / self exploratory work in any PW institution suggested above (also see glossary)

Section 2.2: Sessions offered

Sumedhas PW Interns please note - This module has been designed for PW interns of Sumedhas that have commenced their PW internship in the Summer of 2011. Section 2.3: Note for those interested in beginning PW internship @Sumedhas

The PW internship program is for individuals engaged in leadership positions and developmental activities, who wish to examine the dynamics of self and groups in the journey of change and transformation. Heads of organizations, professionals in Organization Development, Change Agents, Social Entrepreneurs and Educationists tend to find this program immensely meaningful. It prepares participants for the role of leaders, catalysts, facilitators and trainers for developmental work in industries, educational institutions, urban communities, rural societies and other service organizations. The Internship in PW, recently reviewed and redesigned, has the following objectives for the Individual Process Worker to confront the entrenched structures of feeling, thought, action and the world of relationships that impact her goals and purpose of change using groups. To enable the Process Worker to examine ones choice making and role making processes and recognize the invisible roots of inner stress. To go beyond enhancing skills or know how, by reviewing and dismantling the inner structures and discovering ways to being vibrant, strong and flexible. Its building blocks are: 1. Module I (offered in Sumedhas Summer Events) Explorations in Self, Roles, and Identities the key foci is on Self clarification, life clarification, symbolic identity, and inner ambience 2. Module II (offered in Sumedhas Summer Events) Explorations in Systemic Processes and Role Taking the foci is Group processes and Role choices within Systems 3. Module III (offered in Sumedhas Summer Events) Explorations in Initiative and Commitment, Scope of Process Work 4. Module IV (offered in Sumedhas Winter Programs) Cognitive & Knowledge Module looking at theory of groups, experiential learning, social sciences and philosophical underpinnings 5. Module V (offered at various points of time during any year) Participation in any of the Meta-Labs To enroll for the PW internship, prior lab experience of at least 5 days is essential (Sumedhas, ISABS, Aastha, GRC etc.). Each of the building blocks may have its own pre-requisites, and the reader is invited to take note before seeking to enroll for a particular program. Fulfilling necessary projects / book reviews/ understudy and any other requirements that are specified from time to time during the internship in aid of learning / scholarship / practice is essential.

Section 5: About Sumedhas Academy for Human Context and IAOD-S

Sumedhas, Academy for Human Context, is an institution dedicated to fostering learning of human processes. It is a (Section 25A, not for profit company) research and educational body founded by behavioral scientists with diverse backgrounds and a shared discipline in the field. Sumedhas aims to study living phenomena and reality as they occur and promote learning from experience in order to help generate convictions and promote the formation of new responses. This becomes the basis of creativity in processes of living and work. Classical disciplines in the social sciences have largely followed principles similar to the physical sciences and have created enormous bodies of knowledge, which have helped provide insights into human behavior. . However, the reality of living experience largely tends to defy the neat categories of formal knowledge. Sumedhas aims to spread the movement of learning from living, to individuals and groups of all ages, gender and calling, irrespective of caste, creed and color. It hopes that such learning will generate a critical mass of people who will carry their wisdom to re-shape their lives and spaces (organizations, families, institutions) around them and enhance qualities of humanness with conviction, and dignity. Towards this, the Academy offers learning opportunities in the form of a variety of programs. In the year 2006, Sumedhas launched the Indian Academy for Organization Development (IAOD), to foster knowledge and application in the growing space of OD, wherein human processes are the central focus and thus enhance the capability of organizations. IAOD-S has conducted an Academe in Chennai in 2007 on the theme Organization Development by Design Perspectives and Pragmatics, and has also been conducting the Internship in OD since January 2008.

An experience of self-reflective learning in a group context, which fosters greater awareness of ones self with a view to helping one to design a life of dynamism and well-being, as well as equip one with the awareness and tools required to manage ones own ongoing change. See Personal Growth above Process Work is a tripodal body of knowledge, philosophy and praxis aimed at enhancing the well-being of individuals and their collectivities simultaneously. It is characterized by the use of groups, mans inherent need to enquire into his condition and existence and is firmly committed to action for learning that will lead to further action (defined by Sushanta Banerjee, Sumedhas Fellow)

Section 7: Note on Sessions regarding Foundational Underpinnings and Social Sciences

(1) The sessions on philosophy and social sciences are foundational supports to both OD and PW. Though originally designed for OD interns, the explorations in these sessions are expected to be of immense value equally to process workers. (2) Our belief is that Process workers are organization developers and vice versa. Offering of separate streams of learning in PW and OD does not imply the existence of a split. Rather, it offers a means for focusing the participants learning in areas where they choose to build perspectives, capability and competency.
