MEN AND WOMEN RESPONSIBLE OF THE LOCAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

AND GUARDIANS OF THEIR NATURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE

FANAMBY is a Malagasy non-prot organization which builds
on the strong capacities of its multi-disciplinary team. It aims
to conserve terrestrial & marine ecosystems, in partnership
with the private sector, and the women & men living in
and around unique natural habitats. FANAMBY adapts new
technologies and methods to biodiversity conservation and
development of rural livelihoods reecting the needs of nature
and the countrys people.
FANAMBY has helped set up a variety of Protected Areas
that holistically combine community productive needs with
conservation goals. In Madagascar, FANAMBY has been
pioneer in developing Protected Harmonious Landscapes
under - IUCN Category V, guaranteeing that the economic and
ecological value of protected areas is sustainably conserved.
OUR VALUES
FANAMBY IS THE MALAGASY WORD FOR CHALLENGE
Transversal principles:
H]VgZY9ZkZadebZci
Shared development is promoted through a holistic process that integrates all the aspects
which inuence the evolution of natural habitats from productive livelihoods to conserving
ecosystems and its services. Development has a double goal targeting the wellbeing both for
people and natural species of plants and animals.
Shared views amongst stakeholders is the basic guarantee for long term sustainability.
Ownership and awareness of the value of nature by local communities and the variety of
stakeholders may trigger behavior changes that will help protect nature.

Benets and services lead to substantial change in peoples
lives, improving their wellbeing. When sustainable livelihoods
are guaranteed by managing resources sustainably and
improving their productive techniques communities acquire the
capacity to be independent and manage resources responsibly.
Men and women, gender equity is a transversal commitment
that guarantees both equal rights to resources and
substantially improves household wellbeing.

OUR RESULTS
OUR APPROACH
TO SUSTAINABLE TOURISM
Establishment of an equitable and innovative nancial mechanism based on
partnerships between tourist operators and local communities managing the
protected area.
I]ZXdbbjc^i^Zh working through Community based Association:
- Owners of hotel infrastructures
- Direct and principal beneciaries of the project : receive direct employments, a
percentage of tourism prots and increased agricultural productions
- And possess a mutual grant fund for community micro-projects (health,
education, etc.).
7^dY^kZgh^inXdchZgkVi^dcXgZViZhgZhdjgXZh thanks to the income
generated by tourists, and is re-invested in a grant fund making communities
aware of the importance of sound and natural resource management (ecological
monitoring, regulated timber logging, observance of the standards of organic
agriculture, reforestation).
