Abstract This study aims to identify the predictors of performance in Mathematics by the Grade IV pupils of Dulag South District,

Division of Leyte. More specifically, the study will seek to answer the following questions 1. What is the profile of the Grade IV pupils in terms of the following: 1.1 Sex; 1.2 Income of the parents; 1.3 Reading facilities and materials at home 1.4 Study habits 1.5 Attitude towards mathematics 2. What is the profile of Grade IV teachers teaching mathematics in terms of: 2.1 Age 2.2 Sex 2.3 Teaching Experience 2.4 Trainings/Seminar in Mathematics 2.5 Educational Attainment 2.6 Attitudes towards teaching Mathematics 3. What is the level of performance in Mathematics of Grade IV pupils? 4. Is there significant difference on the academic performance of the pupils: 4.1 as may be viewed according to their profiles; and 4.2 as may be viewed according to the profile of the teachers? 5. Is there significant relationship between the academic performance of the pupils and: 5.1 their personal profile; and 5.2 the profile of the teachers?

The study will use the descriptive method of research to probe into the problems raised in the investigations. The study will attempt to identify the predictors of performance in mathematics of Grade IV pupils at Dulag South District through the use of questionnaires. The respondents of this study include the Grade IV pupils of Dulag South District, and their mathematics teachers during the school year 2011-2012. The respondents shall be selected based on purposive sampling. This study will use the following instruments: 1) achievement test, 2) questionnaire for the pupils respondents 3) questionnaire for teachers respondents. The questionnaires for both teachers and pupils, and the achievement test in Mathematics will be administered by the researcher herself with the help of the mathematics teachers concerned. The trial run for the instruments will be conducted in two (2) schools out of sixteen (16) schools in Dulag South District. The data gathered through the different instruments will be transformed to their corresponding quantitative equivalents to make statistical analysis possible. To analyze the differences on the academic performance of the pupils and their personal profile as well as the profile of the teachers, students t test and simple analysis of variance (ANOVA) will be used. To analyze the relationship between the academic performance of the pupils and their personal profiles as well as the profiles of their teachers, Pearson r will be used. To determine which among of the variables have greater influence over the academic performance of the pupils, a deeper analyzes will be conducted using regression analysis.
