The acquisition of reading materials is given priority in that, these are purchased with least possible delay in ordering, acquisition and receipt. The library collection is categorized as under: Circulation Material Reference Material Reserve Material Circulation Material Textbooks, and general reading materials are classified as Circulation and these circulate for seven days, and can be renewed for next 7 days, if not reserved by another student. A student can borrow only 3 books at any given time. Reference Material Certain books are classified as Reference and are only for in-the-library use and these do not circulate.

Reserve Material The Required textbooks and certain books of high-use are classified as Reserve material and are located within the Circulation Desk. A student must request a particular item from Circulation Desk. These include but not limited to Review Books, CD-ROMS and Slides. Reserved items are issued against Student ID for one hour period, and if there is no demand for that item from other students, a student is allowed to keep the item and use it for further period. The students can not take RESERVE ITEMS outside the Library. An overdue charge will be levied on the late return of such materials. Collection Arrangement in the Library The library book collection is arranged in a classified order on shelves, based on US National Library of Medicine Classification System. A schedule of NLM Classification appears at the end as Annexure on Page 17 of this handbook for reference. Computer-assisted Instruction Aids The Library has a variety of computerized educational resources that are essentially required for the use of the faculty and students. It will continue to acquire newer and evaluated biomedical programs that are found suitable for our teaching and students. The computerized programs that are currently available in the library for the use of the faculty and students are given on page 11. The students may check out any individual computer-aid-instruction [CAI] program to be used only in the Library. The borrowed CAI programs are to be returned before the closing of the library. The time allocated to use these programs is based on the students demand for the same and will govern the return time accordingly. All library decisions concerning the acquisition are based on the fact that our students must have timely access to all the available computerized resources that are out and have been evaluated in market in whatever form or shape and adapt these to the campus environment. The library will continue to acquire, on a regular basis, all such programs in biomedical sciences and offer these to students and faculty. Without exception, these materials will not be allowed to be taken out of the Library at any time.

Practice Question Banks The AUA library is currently exploring feasibilities of maintaining a sizeable Question Banks based on the USMLE format in each course. The main purpose of this is to provide a wide selection of questions to test students factual knowledge as well as reasoning skills and ability to interpret data. The students are able to practice examinations and to prepare themselves for the final course examination at the AUA. It will also assist them excel in the USMLE Part I examination when they are ready for it. The AUA management, the library administration and the faculty strongly feel that these type of practice examinations will help each AUA student in preparation for the Boards. We urge the student community not consider these as the only source to prepare themselves for the final examination. All such practice questions should be supplemented by Textbooks, Classroom teaching, teachers handouts or notes and grasp of subject matter. The students are urged not to copy these Questions Banks. The Banks are for personal use of our students and as such it is expected of them to respect the Copyright rules and policies governing the use of all these Banks. It is librarys policy to acquire any audiovisual aid that the faculty considers vital for our school. A variety of material in this category is currently available in the library such as- Slides- Black & white and Color, Video Cassettes, Films, and now the Digital Video Disc as well as DVDs. Overdue Charges Overdue charges are assessed on the reading material borrowed and not returned on due date. The overdue charges are meant to discourage students to delay return of borrowed items from the library. The collected overdue charges are utilized for betterment and improvement of students facilities on the campus. All overdue charges are due at the time of late return of library materials. Failure to pay the amount due will result in withdrawal of borrowing privileges.
