What is an iButton?

---- An iButton is a computer chip which is enclosed in a 16mm thick durable weather resistant stainless steel can. Because of their small size and extreme durability, iButtons can travel virtually anywhere. iButtons are frequently attached to key fobs, rings, watches, or other personal items for applications such as access control to buildings and computers. Additionally, iButtons are commonly mounted to storage crates, trucks, and other equipment for asset management. Furthermore, iButtons are mounted to refrigeration units, outdoor environments, and even to animals for various data logging tasks. iButton varieties include:

Address Only - Guaranteed unique 64-bit serial numbers (i.e. address & ROM id) ideal for access control and route verification applications. Models include the DS1990A & DS1990R. Memory - Data can be stored in NVRAM, EPROM (write once read many) and/or EEPROM. Models range from 1K bits to 64K bits. Real Time Clock - Supplies a unique way to maintain time in applications e.g. calendar, stopwatch, hour meter & Time/Date Stamps. Secure - Data can be protected with SHA-1 (Secure Hash Algorithm) or password protection depending on the level of security required. The DS1990A Serial Number iButton is a rugged data carrier that acts as an electronic registration number for automatic identification. The DS1990A consists of a factory-lasered, 64-bit ROM that includes an unique 48-bit serial number, an 8-bit CRC and an 8-bit Family Code (01h). Data is transferred serially via the 1-Wire protocol which requires only a single data lead and a ground return. The DS1990A is fully compatible with the DS1990 Serial Number iButton but provides the additional

1-Wire protocol capability that allows the Search ROM command to be interpreted by the DS1990A and therefore allows multiple DS1990A devices to reside on a single data line. The durable MicroCan package is highly resistant to environmental hazards such as dirt, moisture and shock. Its compact coin-shaped profile is self-aligning with mating receptacles, allowing the DS1990A to be used easily by human operators. Data is transferred serially through the 1-Wire protocol that requires only a single data lead and a ground return. The scratchpad is an additional page that acts as a buffer when writing to memory. Data is first written to the scratchpad where it can be read back. After the data has been verified, a copy scratchpad command transfers the data to memory. This process ensures data integrity when modifying the memory. A 48-bit serial number is factory lasered into each DS1994 to provide a guaranteed unique identity that allows for absolute traceability. DS1963S 4 Kb NVRAM SHA Monetary with

The DS1963S Monetary iButton with SHA-1 Function is a rugged 4kbit read/write data carrier that can be easily accessed with minimal hardware. Its NV memory acts as a localized database for public as well as protected data belonging to the owner of the device and the environment in which it is used. An integrated 512-bit SHA-1 engine can be activated to compute 160-bit message authentication codes (MAC) based on information stored in the device. Data is transferred serially via the 1-Wire protocol, which requires only a single data lead and a ground return. Using the TMEX file format (see Application Note 114) a single DS1963S can serve up to four independent applications, such as secure change purses for electronic payment at local transit systems, pay phones, parking systems or vending machines. DS1982 1 Kb EPROM :

This is a flexibly programmable database for storing information about a product, piece of equipment, or person or for one-way counting down. Like all iButtons, the DS1982 has a unique serial number for associating a digital address with an object or person and a 1-Wire interface. The port interface provides both the physical link and handles the communication protocols that enable the processor to access iButton resources with simple commands. The DS1982's particular feature is 1 Kb user-programmable EPROM. The EPROM may be programmed multiple times in incremental add-ons that change individual bits from 1 to 0; alternatively, the entire 1 Kb of memory can be programmed at once and then write-protected. This count-down type of memory usage is useful for debit tokens. By means of iButton accessories, the DS1982 can be mounted to make read/write access convenient to the application. *Customers outside the European Union may receive non RoHS units. DS1923: Temperature and Humidity, 8K data pts :

The DS1923 temperature / humidity logger iButton is a rugged, self-sufficient system that measures temperature and/or humidity and records the result in a protected memory section. The recording is done at a user-defined rate. A total of 8192 8-bit readings or 4096 16-bit readings taken at equidistant intervals ranging from 1s to 273hrs can be stored. In addition to this, there are 512 bytes of SRAM for storing application-specific information and 64 bytes for calibration data. A mission to collect data can be programmed to begin immediately, or after a user defined delay or after a temperature alarm. Access to the memory and control functions can be password protected. The DS1923 is configured and communicates with a host-computing device through the serial 1-Wire protocol, which requires only a single data lead and a ground return. THERMOMETER
DS1920: -55 to 100C

The DS1920 provides direct-to-digital 9-bit temperature readings over a range of -55C to +100C in 0.5 increments. The iButton communicates with a processor using the 1-Wire protocol through a hardware port interface. The port interface provides both the physical link and handles the communication protocols that enable the processor to access iButton resources with simple commands. Two bytes of EEPROM can be used either to set alarm triggers or for storing user data. Armored in an iButton, the thermometer can measure temperatures in demanding environments. Like every other iButton, the DS1920 has a unique serial number. The 1-Wire interface reduces data output, address, and power to one line. A unique serial number allows multiple 1920s to share the same bus, with many sensors placed at different sites reporting to a single port on a processor. Multidropped DS1920s make the lowest-power temperature sensing network available inside buildings, equipment, or machinery and in process monitoring and control. With appropriate accessories the DS1920 easily attaches to an object or circuit board. ACCESSORIES:

The DS1402 series incorporates four basic types of connectors, 1-Wire RJ-11, iButton, Touch-andHold Probe, and Blue Dot Receptor. The DS1402 series of 1-Wire network cables provides connectivity for iButtons. The cables are designed to connect any USB, serial, or parallel port 1-Wire adapter to any iButton. Both, the iButton probe cables and the Blue Dot receptor cables can touch any iButton, but can only hold the F5 version iButtons. The DS1402BR8 is the only cable that connects to the DS1401 iButton Holder. Applications of the DS1402-series 1-Wire network cables range from software protection and access control to asset management and thermal monitoring through handheld computers.

The DS9092L+ iButton probe with LED provides the electrical contact necessary for the transfer of data to and from the DS19xx family of iButtons. The round probe shape provides a self-aligning interface which readily matches the circular rim of the iButton's MicroCan package. The solid metal contacts resist wear and are easy to keep clean. The DS9092L+ has no moving parts, making it a rugged interface for harsh environments. The round center contact of the DS9092L+ houses the LED which is rated for maximum 20mA DC at 2.7V typical. The probe comes with a brass M18 x 1 nut for panel mounting. Since the body of the probe also forms the ground contact, the panel should be of non-conducting material to avoid ground loops. The 30cm cable with connector is provided for easy connection to the system microcontroller.
