Submitted by: Mr. Melvin A. Acoba IV-B BSMT Submitted to: Prof. Marissa Natividad February 18, 2012 Original Copy

I. Objectives At the end of the period, the students should be able to: 1. Illustrate/draw parallel lines, intersecting lines and coinciding lines using their definition. 2. Graph the given lines forming the systems of linear equation 3. Determine which of the following systems are parallel, intersecting and parallel. 4. Consider the systems of equations written in slope-intercept form y= mx + b where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept and determine the kind of system using it. II. Subject Matter A. Topic: The Graph of Systems of Linear Equations in 2 Variables B. Subtopic: 1. Independent and Consistent system 2. Independent and Inconsistent system 3. Dependent and Consistent system C. Materials: Colored Cartolina Stick Ruler Pentel Pen

III. Teaching Strategies Teachers activity A. Daily Routine 1. Prayer 2. Checking of Attendance B. Recalling of the Past Lesson As I have discussed to you last time, we already defined the System of linear A system of linear equations equation. Who can define it again? consists of two or more linear equations. And we also defined the Solution set of the systems of linear equation. What is it again? A solution set of systems of linear equation consists of values for the variables that make each equation of the system a true statement C. Motivation Class, yesterday I gave you an assignment about the definition and illustration of a.)Parallel lines b.)Intersecting lines and c.)coinciding lines The class will be divided into 3 groups and each group will define and illustrate the following words. Group 1: Parallel lines Parallel lines are the lines in the same plane that do not intersect. Group 2:Intersecting lines Group 3: Coinciding lines Students activity

Intersecting lines are the lines in the same plane that intersect at exactly One point.

Coinciding lines are the lines in the same plane that intersect in many point

Now , Class what if we put these set of lines to the coordinate plane? What do you think will Hanging Question happen?

D. Lesson Proper 1. Pre Activity Discussion I have here the first set of equations of lines: 2x-y = 1 and 2x+y = 3. y Can anyone who wants to graph the set of equations?

As you can see, the lines intersect at exactly one Coordinates (1, 1). point and what is the point?

Now, class what can you notice about their The two lines have different slopes: slopes? one is positive, the other is negative. They have different y-intercepts. What about their y-intercepts?

And now, I will show to you another set of equations: 2x y = 1 and 2x y = -5. Can anyone who wants to graph the set of equations?
0

As you can see, the lines drawn in the coordinate plane is parallel without any point of intersection.

Then, what is the solution set?

The solution set is an empty set.

They have same slopes but different What can you notice about their slopes and y-intercepts. y-intercepts?

Lastly, I will show to you the last set of equations: 2x y = 1 and 4x 2y = 2 Can anyone who wants to graph the set of equations?
0

Class, we can see that the lines coincide. Infinitely many solutions what is the solution set of the lines? What can you notice about their slopes and The two lines have the same slopes y-intercepts? and y-intercepts.

2. Activity Proper Now class, I will present to you the set of equations of the lines in the slope-intercept form. Set A: y = 2x 1 y = -2x + 3 Set B: y = 2x 1 y = 2x + 5 Set C: y = 2x 1 y = 2x 1

We recall that the slope-intercept form y=mx+b can determine the slope and y-intercept, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. Now I have here a table for the set of equations. It consists of the nature and description of the graph. I need 1 representative each group(Group 1: Set A, Group 2: Set B, Group 3: Set C) to fill up the blanks in the table. You are about to fill only the first 4 columns:

3. Post Activity Discussion What kind of system of linear equations that has exactly one solution and whose graph consists of intersecting lines? What kind of system of linear equations that has no solution, and whose graph consists of two parallel lines? What kind of system of linear equations has an infinite number of solutions and whose graph Independent and Consistent System

consists of coinciding lines? E. Generalization A system of Linear Equations in two variables which has exactly one solution and whose graph consists of intersecting lines is called an Independent and Consistent System. A system of Linear Equations in two variables which has no solution, and whose graph consists of two parallel lines is called an Independent and Inconsistent System. A system of Linear Equations in two variables which has an infinite number of solutions and whose graph consists of coinciding lines is called a Dependent and Consistent System. F. Evaluation Quiz tell what kind of system indicated in the following: 1) x + 2y = 7,3x +6y = 21 2) x + 3y = 4,2x+6y =5 3) x + y = 23,x +y = -5 4) 3x 4y = 2,6x 8y = 4 5) 3x+4y =10 ,6x +8y=20 IV. Assignment Tell the kind of system indicated in the following: 1. x + y = 10 x +y = -6 2. 3x 4y = 8 6x 8y = 16 3. 3x+5y =-4 6x +10y=-12
