AP USH Debate: Did Abraham Lincoln free the slaves?

What is it to have freedom? 1. Sharecropping system: free blacks rented land from farm owners. Many African Americans were stuck in debt to these white owners so that the sharecropping system seemed like another form of slavery 13th amendment unaffected: passed on January 31, 1865, abolished slavery by outlawing involuntary servitude. 2. Despite the 14th amendment, which provided citizenship to every African American and prevented any man from denying rights to life, liberty, and justice and the 15th amendment which said that African Americans cannot be denied the right to vote by race or color, the South became bitter towards the African Americans because of the decrease in income from cotton production. 3. Black codes, rules and restrictions to African Americans (i.e.: carrying passes, curfews, unemployment) It wasnt only Lincoln 4. Lincoln wasnt the only one who supported emancipation of the slaves. - abolitionists (i.e.: Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, John Brown, Arthur and Lewis Tappen (Anti-slavery society), Lydia Maria Child (founder of Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association), etc.) 5. Lincoln wrote to Horace Greeley: "my paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and it is not either to save or destroy slavery, If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that." - His main object to the war was not to free the slaves, but rather to save the Union. - Many people such as Julius Lester question why it took Lincoln 2 years to free the slaves when he had the power to do so. In his speeches, clearly Lincoln was secretly an abolitionist, but in order to preserve the Union, he hesitated. The effect of the Emancipation Proclamation 6. The Emancipation Proclamation did not apply to slave states or areas in the Confederacy states under Union control. Therefore, he did not free the slaves. \ 7. The Emancipation Proclamation was merely a form of propaganda that had Union views

Opening Statement: Definition of freedom - sharecropping system - black codes - open racism from the whites If it werent for the people The abolitionist movement would not have materialized, and Lincoln would not have made the decision to support the emancipation of slavery. Lincolns intentions were not to free slaves, for he was not an abolitionist. It was to save the Union. Emancipation proclamation, 13th, 14th, 15th amendments were all ineffective

The African Americans who were determined to gain their own freedom. In addition, the slaves fought back and contributed to their own equality.
