Jessica Bianchi – Jessica appeared to EF almost right out of thin air and provided us with

I SEW BY VONNELL LAW

I sew. When I tell people I make my own clothing, many are impressed. I don’t really understand why.
Sewing for me is not about fashion. It’s about not dishing out $100 for a dress I can make for $10. It’s
about trying to look different than what mall stores deem to be trendy. It is about the creation of a
garment, one that fits my body perfectly at different times in my life. It’s about the art of pinning and
draping fabric perfectly, screwing up, and starting all over again. It’s about forgetting about the rest of
the world in the quest for perfection.

In an age where clothing is made and bought so cheaply, it’s no wonder so few people have and
know how to use a sewing machine. The youth culture of today have the mentality of disposal. This is not
exactly cheap, both to your pocket and to the environment. There is value in salvage, and it is possible
to revamp your favourite skirt or jacket. Here are some tips for your inner seamstress/tailor:

1 Raid your closet. Find clothing you no don’t like or that no longer fits you. Same goes with ripped
and otherwise unwearable clothing. Cut it up. Experiment. All you need are a pair of scissors and a
needle and thread. Dollar stores are great for that. Take some newspaper, make a pattern and pin
until it fits.

2
Swap. Get your friends together for a clothing swap. Repeat step 1 if something doesn’t fit quite
right.

3
Join a sewing club. I guarantee you it will be full of middle-aged housewives, but they’ll teach

Photgraphy by Vonnell Law

you the basics of pattern reading. Plus you might pick up some age=old wisdom.

4
Hit up a bookstore or library. There is lots of literature to choose from, and reading through
a couple of books will give you the basics on simple stiches and how to properly mend something.
Many provide patterns as well.

5
Maximize Usage. Keep your clothing until it is completely unwearable. Try shopping at used
clothing stores and altering garments as you see fit. Not only will you feel better about paying so little
for something so awesome, but you will be contributing less to a landfill and looking great whilst doing
it!

6 Donate. Instead of throwing away something you hate something ferocity, donate it to Goodwill.
Who knows, someone else might be able to transform it into something beautiful. One woman’s trash
is often another woman’s treasure.

Our bodies are our temples, so we should be just as conscious about what we put on them as what we put in them.
There are a variety of products on the market that purport being “natural”, however, the Food and Drug Administration
does not regulate the term “natural”. The term organic, on the other hand, falls under the USDA’s standards for organic
foods, even when it refers to beauty products. This ensures that beauty products labelled “organic” use ingredients grown
free of pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides, as well as ensure a certified organic production process. The ingredients

What do Dave Matthews Band, The Barenaked Ladies, Coldplay, and
Jack Johnson all have in common? Not a whole lot, you might think, but while their
music may sound completely different, they all share one common goal: giving back
to the Earth.
Believe it or not, the music industry produces a fair amount of environmental
waste. Wren Aigaki-Lander of MusicMatters, a “green” marketing agency devoted
to helping artists make environmentally conscious choices while on tour, estimates
that as much as 150, 000 tons of carbon are emitted from tour buses each year.
Add to that the amount of carbon dioxide emissions from a single stadium show
(anywhere from 500 to 1,000 tons), and the massive amount of garbage- which
easily amounts to 470, 000 plastic cups, 200, 000 napkins, 600 light bulbs, and 24,
000 plastic bags- and you have a lot of waste. And to think it all comes from one
single show! “The music industry has huge potential for social and environmental
change,” says Aigaki-Lander.
When presented with such facts, some musicians are taking action to employ
more sustainable practices in hopes of raising awareness about environmental
activism and the threat of global warming. Some groups, such as Dave Matthews
Band, have been eco-friendly since the early 1990s- but others are quickly jumping
on the bandwagon. However they choose to take part, many musicians are making
a considerable difference.
Canada’s own quirky alternative-pop quartet, otherwise known as The
Barenaked Ladies, show their green side by collecting broken guitar strings to be
recycled into jewellery, using biodegradable plates and cutlery to eat locally grown
organic food, replacing plastic bottles with reusable canteens, and driving buses
fuelled with bio-diesel. Additionally, The Barenaked Ladies have begun showing a

Mellow crooner Jack Johnson is best known for entertaining the world with
his tunes since 2005. Johnson is also known for exercising his eco-friendly side by
recycling, using bio-fuels, donating leftover food from backstage to local shelters,
and selling eco-friendly merchandise made of organic cotton at his shows. “I grew
up in Hawaii and surfed all the time,” he explains. “I was out in nature more than I was
inside. I’ve always had a really profound respect for nature, so (being eco-friendly)
just felt natural to me.” Johnson recognizes and supports the efforts of eco-friendly
trailblazers: “I was definitely not the first. I heard about [musicians like] Neil Young
and Willie Nelson and Pearl Jam running their trucks and buses off of bio-diesel, and
I wanted to be part of that crew and jump on it.” What’s more, in preparation for
his latest album Sleep Through the Static, Johnson built the Los Angeles recording
