LASER TRACKER CALIBRATION

1 PURPOSE & APPLICATION

1.1 This work instruction standardizes the process for Laser Tracker calibration at MTI. 1.2 It applies to all personnel performing Laser Tracker operations and calibrations. 3.3.4 Calibrated ball bar. 3.4 Calibration Procedures 3.4.1 Preparation 3.4.1.1 Verify the gage identification to the database recall information. 3.4.1.2 Examine Laser Tracker and Accompanying tooling for foreign material, missing parts, nicks, burrs, scratches, signs of wear, and freedom of movement through its total range. 3.4.1.3 Apply sufficient cleaning solution to dampen a lint free cloth. 3.4.1.4 Clean all exposed surfaces with the dampened cloth to remove foreign material and fingerprints. Do not allow the cleaning solution to enter the internal areas of the Laser Tracker. 3.4.2 Annual calibration 3.4.2.1 Annual calibration shall be performed in each quadrant, not to exceed 90 deg, for which the tracker will be used. 3.4.2.1.1 If less than all four quadrants are calibrated, it shall be noted on the calibration sticker and in the calibration database what the acceptable range of use is. 3.4.2.2 Calibration shall be performed at distances of 3.5 meters, 7.0 meters and 9.0 meters. 3.4.2.2.1 If the tracker will not be used at distances greater than 7.0 meters, then calibration at 9.0 may be omitted provided that the range of use is noted on the calibration sticker and in the calibration database. 3.4.2.3 At each calibration location orient the scale bar in horizontal, vertical, and distance orientations and collect a point from the tooling ball on each end of the ball bar. 3.4.2.4 Compute the length between points using the Spatial Analyzer Software. Record the actual temperature of the ball bare and compensate nominal length for thermal expansion. Compare the measured length to the temperature compensated scale bar length and evaluate IAW Table I. 3.4.2.5 Present completed report to the calibration technician. 3.4.2.6 After acceptance, document inspection results in the Calibration Database and attach a completed calibration sticker to the tool or tool case. Attach a piece of clear tape over the calibration sticker. Trim the tape around the sticker to ensure the tape does not interfere with the performance of the tool. Date Printed 1/21/2011

2.1 Trained and authorized personnel perform Laser Tracker calibrations and document results.

3 INSTRUCTION
3.1 Acceptable Laser Tracker Accuracy is: 3.1.1 Required Linear Accuracy is per Table I. Distance from Tracker Tolerance 3.5 meters (approx 11.5 ft) +/- .002 7.0 meters (approx 23 ft) +/- .004 9.0 meters (approx 29.5 ft) +/- .005 3.1.2 IFM accuracy is within .0004 when checked per manufacturer instructions. 3.1.3 Two face accuracy is within .0026 decimal degrees both vertical and horizontal. 3.1.4 Target reflector accuracy is within .001 3.1.5 Target adapter accuracy is within .002 per Figure 1-3 3.1.6 Evaluate the Laser Tracker if it exceeds the specified limit accordance with MQ-04-36-00-00. 3.2 Laser Tracker calibration interval. 3.2.1 Tracker scale bar calibration 12 months. 3.2.2 IFM check weekly. If four consecutive tests pass without adjustment, the frequency can be reduced to monthly. If a test does not pass or if an adjustment is made, increase frequency back to weekly. 3.2.3 Two-Face check is performed daily. 3.2.4 Target reflectors and Target adapters shall be calibrated annually. 3.3 Materials used in the calibration process include: 3.3.1 Reflector 3.3.2 Lint-free cloth. 3.3.3 70% isopropyl alcohol. 3.4.3 Weekly Calibration (IFM check) 3.4.3.1 The IFM check shall be performed in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Ensure the deviation is less than .0004 3.4.4 Daily Calibration steps (Two-Face Check) 3.4.4.1 Check two face alignment IAW manufacturer instructions 3.4.4.2 Ensure the deviation less than 0.0026 decimal degrees in horizontal and vertical angles. 3.4.5 Target reflectors shall be calibrated per the following: 3.4.5.1 Place the reflector in its LTD 500 home location; 3.4.5.2 Record a single point measurement using SA Software; 3.4.5.3 Rotate the reflector approximately 45 degrees; 3.4.5.4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 until at least eight points have been taken (360 degrees); 3.4.5.5 Analyze the data for the maximum distance between points; 3.4.5.6 Ensure the value in step 5 is less than .001 inch; 3.4.5.7 Record the date, time, temperature, humidity, reflector ID, and distance in the IFM log. 3.4.6 Target adapters shall be calibrated IAW figures 1 through 3.
