Admission to the Graduate and PostGraduate Program (MA and PhD)

MA Communication (MA Comm) Applicants Prospective students to the MA Comm program mst have a GWA of 2.25 or better from his/her Bachelor's degree if the degree was earned from UP or 2.0 or better if the degree was earned from another institution of higher learning. Accepted applicants who have no background in communication will be required to enroll in Comm 140 and Comm 201. MA Media Studies (MA MS) Applicants Prospective students in MA MS Broadcast Communication must have obtained an average of 2.0 or better from his/her Bachelor's degree. S/he must have either a Bachelor's degree in Broadcasting or Journalism, or a related discipline; or at least one year of work experience in Broadcast or Journalism. Prospective students in MA MS Journalism must have obtained an average of 2.0 or better from his/her Bachelor's degree. S/he must have either a Bachelor's degree in Journalism or a media-related field or at least two (2) years experience as a practicing journalist. An applicant who would like to specialize in Film must have an average of 2.25 or better from his/her Bachelor's degree. PhD in Communication An applicant to the College's PhD program must have a Master's degree from a recognized institution of higher learning. A general weighted average of 2.0 or higher in the Master's studies is required of PhD applicants. The applicant should exemplify a very high degree of accomplishment in the desired fireld of stude and must pass a series of in-depth interviews to be conducted by a distinguished panel of PhD faculty of the

College. Moreover, the applicant must pass a written admission examination to be administered by a PhD faculty committee to be constituted by the Dean. An applicant must show proof of proficiency in English and/pr Filipino. Foreign applicants who obtained theeir Master's degree abroad must show proof that they passed the Test of English as Foreign LAnguage or TOEFL with a minimum sore of 500 or 250 in the computer-based TOEFL. Qualification Requirements for each specialization are specified in the home departments' pages. MA MS in Broadcast Communication MA MS in Film MA MS in Journalism MA in Communication Research International Students Prospective students who obtained their MA degrees abroad must show proof that they passed the Standard Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) wih a minimum score of 500 (paper-based exam) or 250 in the TOEFL iBT. An applicant admitted to the PhD program who obtained their Master's degree abroad are required to take six (6) units of Filipino language courses as an additional requirement to be taken during the First Year of enrollment or they must show proof of proficiency in the Filipino language. Application Instructions 1. Secure the form Application for Admission to a Graduate Program (CMC-GP Form No.1) from the College of Mass Communication's Administrative Office (1st floor, Plaridel Hall). Fill this out and submit. 2. Write a formal letter of application addressed to the Dean, College of Mass Communication. 3. Pay an application fee of P200.00 (for Filipino citizens) and US$50.00 (for International Students). This is to be paid to the University Cashier, Unicersity of the Philippines, Diliman (behind the UP Shopping Center). 4. Prepare photocopies of the official transcripts of undergraduate or graduate records. Prepare the originals as well because these will need to be presented for verification. 5. Prepare a Certified True Copy of diploma/s and certificate/s of graduation. 6. Identify at least two former professors or two experts in your field, and two character references whom you think are capable of objectively evaluating your past performance and your potential for success as a graduate student and professional in your chosen field. Request these persons to complete the recommendation forms (CMC-GP Form No.2) and mail these to directly to the College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City, 1101. 7. An applicant to the MA Media Studies (Broadcasting) program, who does not have either a Bachelor's degree or work experience in Broadcasting is required to take the graduate courses BC 201 and BC 203 prior to enrolment in major courses. However, s/he may take cognates or electives together with the aforementioned required subjects. 8. Admissions exams and interviews are usually conducted before the beginning of the semester of each academic year. Prospective students are advised to contact the College or the department before the end of the semester (August for the first semester, and

January or February for the second semester) for any updates. Announcements will be posted on the website as well.

An applicant admitted to the MA Communication (Communication Research) program whose undergraduate degree was not received from the College, is required to take the courses Communication 140 and Communication 201 prior to enrollment in major courses. An applicant admitted to this program who does not have a background in Communication is likewise requred to take the said prerequisites. The Master of Arts in Media Studies allows students to specialize in the fields of Broadcast Communication, Film and Journalism. This track is anchored on critical-cultural approaches to studying media as culture industries. MA students interrogate the socio-political, political-economic and cultural influences of mass media products, and how these affect Filipinos' view of the world, the country, and themselves. The Master of Arts in Communication offers specialization in Communication Research. This track focuses on empirical research into issues in communication and media. Students to dig deeper into communication processes, audience perceptions; measure effects and perceptions through rigorous fieldwork and statistical analysis. This allows students to uncover the impact of various communication processes, messages and channels and provide insight into efficient and effective ways of getting one's message across. RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS for the MA Comm and MA MS degrees The Phd (Communication) program aims to provide advanced graduate training in theory, research, policy, planning and management which would enable qualified students to carry out independent research in the discipline and to pursue careers in academic, government, and private communication media agencies and communication-related institutions.

Residency Requirements for the MA Comm and MA Media Studies Program


Once admitted, students in the MA MS degree will be required to complete 39 units of coursework, including a successfully defended Master's thesis. Admitted students in the MA Comm degree will be required to complete 36 units of coursework, including a successfully defended Master's Thesis. The requirements needed to graduate with an MA MS or MA Comm degree are broken down as follows: 1. Completion of a Program of Study consisting of a minimum of thirty (30) unit of formal graduate courses, which include required courses in the college as well as cognates that may be obtained in other colleges in the University;

2. Maintenance of a cumulative weighted average (CWAG) of 2.0 or better at the end of each academic year until completion of the Program of Study; 3. Passing the candidacy examination (Compre) after completion of the course work in the student's Program of Study; 4. Passing the oral defense of the Thesis proposal; 5. Passing the oral defense of the Thesis; 6. Submission of five (5) certified bound copies of the thesis and one (1) digital copy of the approved MA Thesis; 7. Submission of a pre-print or pre-publication manuscript of the thesis, where applicable. The student must be in residency in all these steps in the program, and must have no grade of incomplete or INC in any of his/her subjects.

Post Graduate Degrees (PhD)


A student is required to complete the following coursework and research units to graduate with a PhD degree. 1. Completion of a Program of Study guided by a member of the CMC Faculty with the same, or similar, research agenda.

> At least thirty six (36) units of formal graduate courses, excluding dissertation in the case of students whose Master's degree is not in the discipline. > At least twenty-four (24) units of formal graduate courses for hose whose Master's degree in in the discipline.

2. Maintenance of a Cumulative Weighted Average (CWAG) of 1.75 or better at the end of each academic year until completion of the Program of Study. 3. Passing a Qualifying Examination after completion of the core courses (Communication 301, 310 and 312) in the Program of Study. 4. Passing the Candidacy Examination after the completion of all course work in the Program of Study and those units stipulated by residence rules. 5. Passing the oral presentation and defense of the Dissertation Topic. 6. Passing the oral presentation and defense of the Dissertation Proposal. 7. Passing the oral presentation and defense of the Dissertation.

8. Being in residence in the program during the completion of grade of "Incomplete" or INC, qualifying examination, candidacy examination, dissertation topic defense, duration of the dissertation research, and the defense of the dissertation. 9. Submission of at least five (5) certified bound copies and at least one (1) digital copy of the approved doctoral dissertation. 10 Submission of a pre-print or a pre-publication manuscript of the dissertation, where applicable.
