In recent years, the complexity of power systems is continually increasing because of the growth in interconnections and use of new technologies. At the same time, financial and regulatory constraints have forced utilities to operate the system nearly at stability limits. Therefore being placed on the use of special control aids to remain the system in a state of equilibrium operating conditions afier being subjected to a disturbance. The small signal stability problem is associated with modes of oscillations affecting either a single machine (local modes) or a small group of relatively closely connected machines (inter-area modes). This problem has got a very high attention in the last three decades and many types of controllers depend on classica1 and modern control theory have been developed by designing supplementary control signals to improve system damping. Pole placement method can damp the oscillation if the parameters of the system are constant and the nonlinearity of the system can be neglected. Since power systems are highly nonlinear systems, with configurations and parameters that change with time, the pole placement method that designed based on the linear zed model of the power system cannot guarantee its performance in a practical operating environment In this paper we proposed an adaptive control method using pole placement. The state feedback gains are updated using neural networks. The neural networks are used to identcfi the parameters of the system online. The outputs of neural networks update the state feedbackgains automatically. The neural networks are trained to optimize the pevformance of the control systems. The results proved the potency of the adaptive pole placement using neural networks. Keywords :power system - oscillation - adaptive pole placement - neural network
INTRODUCTION The electrical energy has become the major form of energy for end use consumption in today's world. There is always a need of making electric energy generation and transmission, both more economic and reliable. The voltages throughout the system are also controlled to be within +5% of their rated values by automatic voltage regulators acting on the
